Andrew Garfield, Marc Webb And Kym Barrett Talk THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Suit Design

Andrew Garfield, Marc Webb and costume designer Kym Barrett all talk about the creation of the suit worn by Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, revealing the inspiration behind the mechanical web-shooters and much more.

"We were trying to create a suit that looked and felt as if Peter could make it himself, and it was important for the suit to enhance the lean physique of Spider-Man, and for him to have a rather spidery quality about him," reveals The Amazing Spider-Man's costume designer Kym Barrett. "I began with the idea that Peter Parker creates the spider costume in his computer. Marc wanted to present an electronic world, with evidence of technology everywhere, so our Spider-Man suit needed to become part of this world. We used Andrew Garfield’s physique to determine how and where the lines flowed across the body for the suit, so the lines had geometric form from any angle."

"We found that we could print shadows on the fabric of the suit, and that gives the suit real density and depth on the screen," Barrett says about how the production team looked for ways to incorporate a texture which would really take advantage of the fact that the movie was shot in 3D. The lenses for the mask were actually created by the same company that make sunglass lenses for the military and NASA. These were then coated to reduce reflection and feature a blue-tinted optical lens with a gold hexagon mirrored pattern printed on top. All this effort was not lost on the man who spent 20 minute a day struggling to get into the suit; Andrew Garfield. "The first time I saw the suit, I thought it was so cool, and Kym did an incredible job reimagining the suit while remaining true to what Steve Ditko originally drew. The first time I put on the suit, it was kind of surreal and joyous, because you see yourself embodying something that’s meant so much to you."

The creation of the mechanical web-shooters was equally as important to those who worked on the film, and director Marc Webb knew that it was vital to ground them in reality. "It fits in with our goal to make Peter’s world seem real," he says. "Peter Parker is very much a kid of today. He wouldn’t wait around for someone to invent web-shooters; he’d be on the internet, doing research and figuring out how to make them himself. He’s got a head for this stuff naturally – designing the web-shooters is just the next logical step for him." Barrett echoes these thoughts and explains that she was influenced by the wide leather watch bands which have plastic covers that snap over to protect the face. "We thought Peter would think these were perfect. Take out the watch and you have a great housing for the web-shooters. Snap the cover over it to hide it, and when you’re walking down the street, it just looks like you’re wearing a watch."

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Why not just make it have actual depth rather than painting shadows on it that make it look dirty all the time?

yeah a teen could really create such a complicated costume

[frick] out of here kym!

they no damn well they should of stuck to the original ditko design as its much simpler ill let the material pass as he could of just ordered it online .

but the design is way to complicated to make by hand.

and i still dont see the need for those dumb ass l;eg stripes

"So a poor teenage could get ahold of a Red and Blue basketball and Jordan's? yes that is very realistic."

Realistic...that is hilarious. You question his ability to make his costume, and not the walking on walls, lifting cars, web shooters, and spider sense.

I'll take this costume over a cotton or polyester one sported by Electric Company Spidey, or that live action show from the 80's.

i agree it could be better & it did need to grow on me abit, but when i actually see it on film.

i don't think its that bad.
CaptainObvious
CaptainObvious - 6/18/2012, 8:58 AM
I don't think the audience will care how a teenager could make a costume. It's just something that people will accept. Nobody question how he made the suit in Raimi's trilogy. In fact, nobody questions how any suit is made in a superhero movie. It's called suspension of disbelief.
superotherside
superotherside - 6/18/2012, 9:03 AM
Well I don't like the look of the suit personally but if they do explain other than that he's a fashion designer and makes a suit that you could only do with very expensive materials... then I'll be alright with it. Perhaps Oscorp makes it as some type of suit their working on then he modifies it?
Masterpace
Masterpace - 6/18/2012, 9:04 AM
Well in this movie they will show more of the creating process than in Raimi's trilogy so just wait, see the movie and then say whats on your mind...I'm sure he didn't create the material for his suit...and if they won't just show us Peter looking at his drawing and then just time skip to the action...I'll be happy.
@GUNSMITH Ask S. Lee and S. Ditko.

I wonder if all of you people hating web shooters and web fluid also hate so much Iron man armor...because news flash...it's also impossible to create armor like that for now...I'm not even talking about those stupid suitcase version from IM2 and this flying suitcase- or something- from the avengers.

I think the suit looks great. The idea that this suit looks bad, and spidey's comic book suit looks good, is nonsense. They both look like superhero costumes, and if you can't suspend disbelief then that's your problem.
G
G - 6/18/2012, 9:20 AM
They went with the mechanical webshooters because they are supposed to be more "realistic"? But, wouldn't those things be shooting off webs every time he made a fist, or every time he grabbed something with his hand?

For those who have issues with Peter making such advanced costumes on his own.....

I always thought the best solution for (movie) Spider-Man having such cool, detailed costumes is that they were made for him by the production company that wanted him to be a TV star. Remember in the original Spider-Man story he was a bit of a media sensation doing tricks on TV and stuff. In my story concept for Spider-Man movies the studio producing the TV show made him a bunch of cool suits and he kept them to use as a crimefighter after the TV gig fell through.

@ Maximus101

i don't want it to fail,i just don't like the look of bane or the casting of anne hathaway.

it will gross somewhere between what batman begins & the dark knight took, don't expect another billion unless its at the cinema for 6 months.
LOL
LOL - 6/18/2012, 10:04 AM
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Am laughing my ass offa this one..... really??? made it himself right? using body scans, a nasa-designed eye lenses, and other exotic materials that a kid with almost NO budget has a chance in touching. The movie may become a hit, but we're not stupid enough to buy that cart of horse manure they're trying to feed us on the ease of how Parker made that suit. Hell, the costume in Kick-Ass for the titular hero made is MORE realistic than that overcomplicated piece of tripe.

The web shooters on the other hand, I can stomach the reasoning.
