Nicolas Winding Refn To Bring BARBARELLA To The Small Screen

There has been talk of Barbarella being brought back to the big screen, but the character (who first appeared in a graphic novel by Jean-Claude Forest and later a movie starring Jane Fonda) now looks set to find a home on television with some serious talent behind the scenes.

Gaumont International Television and producer Martha De Laurentiis are bringing Barbarella to the small screen reports Deadline. However, the most exciting part of the announcement is the fact that they will be teaming up with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn for the planned TV series. He will direct and executive produce, and calls the character, "one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters." GIT CEO Katie O’Connell adds, "We are thrilled to have secured the rights from the Forest estate and are thrilled to be pairing the bold visceral style of Nicolas Refn with the pop culture icon Barbarella." Are you looking forward to the series? Which actress do you think is the right choice to play the iconic character? Sound off with your thoughts below.

I would love to see this made with real talent - and great FX. Perhaps even retro costume/ship designs.

Only HBO would allow this show to reach its potential.

HBO or another movie version.
Isn't Winding-Refn a little too dark and serious for Barbarella?

I guess this means Rodriguez' version is dead and buried, which is a shame. He woulda done a pretty fun version.

Oh god... Thanks to this movie, in the 80s people would usually laugh and say "Duran Duran!" when I told them my name and surname (which is Duran, the evil scientist in the movie's called Duran Duran, from which the band took the name). I really hated it.

Please...No Christina Hendricks!
That would be horrible!

Someone younger and hotter please!
Something tells me he will want Hendricks, though.

I confirm Cherry Bombs comment. I would watch Upton do her taxes.

What happened to the Wonder Woman project for Refn after he directed Drive?

I've heard of this character before, but I don't really know that much about her.

With Nicloas Winding Refn developing this, I'll definitely check it out. I thought Drive was great.

@CherryBomb I love Kate Upton, so I say yes to that.

@lntrn8 The whole thing is when he gets around to directing the Logan's Run remake, it has to do well at the box office. Because if it does, DC/WB will let him direct Wonder Woman. That was the deal I believe.

@NOLANITE I hope he directs the movie too. I just don't want him to automatically cast Christina Hendricks as Wonder Woman if he gets the gig.

Don't get me wrong, she is gorgeous. She just isn't right for the role.

anyone read the book that "drive" is based on?

ive just finished it and the film is literally a billion times better

for a start the driver is violent the whole way through and talks more than anyone else in the book combined

@forthesakeofnow She's a model mainly, she's pretty big in the modelling world. She got more well known after her youtube video:

But she's done minor acting work on The Three Stooges, Tower Heist and SNL. So she must be able to act (:

@cherry

oh right one of those model/actresses, lol.

i cant imagine the role would be too challenging i guess.

its the sort of thing its probably more important to go for looks over range on i guess
