COMICS: Marvel Cancels Nine Major Titles This October

In order to make way for the Marvel NOW! relaunch, Marvel will cancel nine titles this October. These include Captain America, Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men. Several other books are also listed as the last for certain creative teams.

The first issue of Uncanny Avengers will be released in October, but that's not the only major change at Marvel this Halloween. Nine titles are set to be cancelled, while Avengers #31 and #32 are listed as being the the beginning of Brian Michael Bendis' "final explosive arc" on the series. The same applied for both New Avengers #31 and #32. Meanwhile, Avengers Assemble #8 is listed as being the last for Bendis and artist Mark Bagley and Journey Into Mystery #645 is sadly Kieron Gillen's last issue as he "bids farewell" to the book. This October, the following titles will be coming to an end.

-Captain America #19
-Fantastic Four #611
-FF #23
-Incredible Hulk #15
-Invincible Iron Man #527
-New Mutants #50
-The Mighty Thor #22
-Uncanny X-Men #20
-X-Men Legacy #275

This is perhaps out first indication that these titles will all be relaunched with new #1 issues between November and February. With rumours that we will see Rick Remender and John Romita Jr. on Captain America and Kieron Gillen and Greg Land on Iron Man, big changes are afoot over at Marvel. Unfortunately for cash-strapped comic book fans, many of the above titles will be double shipping in October, making it a VERY expensive month. In my opinion this was needed by Marvel. To many titles all over the place right now. Get it streamlined and modernized. Please Relaunch Thor, he has been really disappointing storywise over the past couple of years.

The bulk of these 'cancelled' titles are getting #1'ed again (Hulk is going to be like Hulk: Agent of SMASH or some such nonsense). Uncanny X is being replaced with Uncanny A, not sure about FF and New Mutants though.

nearly all marvel titles from the 60s have been cancelled & relaunch i,e the avengers,uncanny x-men,daredevil,the incredible hulk,iron man,silver surfer & so on.

even modern comics i.e wolverine,x-force,punisher,moon knight,new avengers,daredevil,captain america,guardians of the galaxy,ghost rider,nova & so on.

they should just make them good jumping on points,instead of going back to issue 1.

The problem I have with relaunch of titles is because once they get to a "milestone" issue they'll just go back to their original number. In a way, I understand that but still...

@Deadpool101 if you think that Daniel Ways righting of my beloved character is at all good you're a damn fool. I would much rather have Remender or bring back Simone to write. Way has made Deadpool a freaking on going joke from the early pages of Vol.3. I dream of the day they pass this goddamn title to someone other than Way, but it never seems to happen.

@Asterisk I 100% agree with you. I love Deadpool, but I honestly quit buying the books because the stories are just freaking horrible. When they were doing Deadpool-DEAD I was so freaking happy thinking they were going to kill him off and relaunch it......NOPE, just made the character and story more horrible.....GODDAMNIT!!

@Marvel87 - Yeah, Uncanny Avengers is replacing Uncanny X-men. Also the All-New X-Men (or whatever the title is with the original 5 time travelling from the 1960's somehow making a home in the present continuity) is replacing another cancelled X-title, not sure which.

So here we have yet another gimmicky rebooting of comic titles because everybody buys #1 issues. SMH Why not try something really radical like telling exciting and interesting stories, contained within one title?

Grif is right yet again. All these multiple titles starring every solo character and every team have really diluted the quality of the books. We used to have just two Spidey books a month, Amazing and Spectacular. One Avengers. One FF. One X-Men. The books were a LOT better in terms of both story and art.

I am undecided about this. I believe this is in direct result of the success of the DCnU (which coincendtly WB has to launch a JL movie as soon as possible due to the success of The Avengers). And while part of me excited that there will be updates - It's the fact that Marvel feels they have to "reboot" that concern me most.

The success of the movies is driving comic sales alone. Want to make more money? Filter out the crappy books, spin-off books (how many Spiderman titles out there today?) artists, and writers, quit telling major arcs with cross overs including 50 books, drop the price back down to $2.99 a book, and mainstream your best titles with the best artists, writers, and characters in the business!

You officially have my two cents.

At a time when Marvel comics have the potential to hit "mainstream" audiences through whopping the great success of The Avengers and all the films preceding it, as well as the ones to follow, why do they continue to over complicate everything by these great big crossover events and renumbering of everything? I started reading X-men during the Hunt For Xavier storyline and continued until just after they started putting more crossovers out after Grant Morrisons run. I got fed up and a bit confused after refusing to buy several comics I don't read just to complete one storyline. Basically I gave up on the x-men. Spiderman I dropped after BND, Wolverine I am just bored of since he is everywhere.
Point that I am getting to is, as far as I am concerned, Marvel needs to do a bit of "housework" and get rid of the clutter (needless crossovers) tighten things up a bit (keep characters to specific stories - lose Wolverine down a big adamantium coated hole for a few years...)and try to have a bit more continuity (How can Wolverine have his x-men, his own solo stories as well as being in the Avengers?)
If this happens, I am sure new readers will not be so daunted by getting into these stories.

@grif agreed. Sometimes I really don't understand comics. I mean, why is it that each character seems to have like 7 titles running at the same time? Surely if they saved those ideas and reduced the number of titles being released per character, then the characters would have greater longevity in terms of quality. Does Spider-Man need so many titles? No.

Certain comic books warrant multiple titles, mainly team books, because it means different members can be involved in simultaneously running stories. Like X-Men or Avengers. There are so many members of both teams, that they could run two titles simultaneously for each team, with each title featuring a different roster of characters, and the teams can be changed up at the end of each story arc. I mean, as much of a fan I am of Wolverine, for example, there are other X-Men out there who deserve to be highlighted.

I also think this is why not too many people read comics any more. It's becoming too complicated for new readers to pick up titles, because there's too many different versions being released, and it's hard to keep track.

If you've read comics long enough you'd know that these title are not coming to an end. They'll just be renamed and renumbered to boost sales for the new event/status quo. Once one of these books are nearing a mile stone they'll rename the book back to it's original title and continue numbering the book as if everything during the retitling/renumbering counted as if it was always part of the original title and numbering. As much as I love this universe and these characters, the fact remains it's Marvel's (not so) sneaky little way to drive up sales.

This is the reason comic book companies, like Marvel, now rely on these big events and civil-wars between heroes. I thought Marvel Civil War was OK because it was pretty new back then, but now, it's like every year there's a new civil war between different heroic groups, the latest being Avengers Vs X-Men. If there weren't so many titles being pumped out, then the quality wouldn't be suffering so much.

And DC are guilty of this too. Why does Batman need like five solo titles plus individual titles for each of his sidekicks? It's ridiculous, I don't even attempt to buy comics any more, I just buy graphic novels and trades if I hear they're good.
