BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Has The Second Biggest Opening Of 2012 In The UK

While the UK is nowhere near as big a market as North America when it comes to box office totals, superhero films are equally as well-received on this side of the Pond. Want proof? Well, The Amazing Spider-Man has the second biggest opening of 2012. Read on for details.

The Amazing Spider-Man ended up finishing a few million dollars below estimates in the US last week, but Marc Webb's reboot has still been a hit for Sony Pictures and a sequel shouldn't be too far away. Digital Spy now reports that the film (starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans) has opened with over £11 million, giving it the second highest debut of 2012 behind only Avengers Assemble - as it was known in the UK - which earned a whopping £15.78 million. The total made by The Amazing Spider-Man is more than every other film in the Top 10 combined as it held off competition from the likes of Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, The Five-Year Engagement and Katy Perry: Part of Me.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: Out Now.

I think the dark knight will do well just because people will have high expectations from the last,so even if it ends up being a shit movie it would still make alot of money,it wont blow avengers out of the water though

It's interesting cuz in UK, The Dark Knight is still the highest grossing SuperHero film!
The Dark Knight did almost 90 million$.
Avengers did 77+ million$.
While SpiderMan-3 did 67 million$!

"Dark Knight" brand is a huge thing here as well; I think if TDKR is good enough it can do 100 million$ in UK!!
Waiting ... Waiting ... July20 coming!!!

TASM was better than the avengers, which was also good, but its huge success comes from the new design, from the different marvel heroes in one movie. If only it had a real story and score plus spiderman in it, then it would have been the best CBM, but maybe in the future.

TASM really surprised me.

Fair play The Amazing Spider-men was bloody awesome. Can't wait for the sequel. Enter Norman Osborn. Can't believe Captain George Stacey got killed off. I think Webb could've waited til the sequel to kill him off.

WHAT Captain Stacy got killed off in the first movie!? I haven't seen it yet.

And personally as long as a CBM knocks the hell out of Titanic from the number one spot in my time I'll be a happy man.

Wouldn't it be funny if the three top openings in the UK were all superhero films?
Ceejay

Want to talk real Box Office and not propaganda?

Well here's the facts:

Spider-man 1 opened to a $13 million weekend in the UK while The Amazing Spider-man could only manage $11 million.

Just for the record, Spider-man 2 made $16 million and Spider-man 3 made $23 million openings in the UK!

Spider-man 1 opened in just 3,615 screens back in 2002 and made over $151 million in 7 days. But The Amazing Spider-man opened in 4,318 screens and even with boosted prices with 3D showings could only manage $144 million!

Just for the record again, Spider-man 2 made $192 million (4,152 screens) and Spider-man 3 made $182 million (4,252 screens) in 7 days, no 3D assists for either!

The new Spider-man film suffers form very pedestrian storytelling and a banal villain. It tries to be more serious and emotional than the Raimi movies but in doing so only ends up less entertaining to watch. The movie just doesn't do enough to justify a reboot instead of a continuation and its lower than expected box office will still make it a financial hit but in terms of the box office potential the Raimi movies realized, this flick is falling short big-time!
Ceejay
Ceejay - 7/11/2012, 7:39 AM
And just for a CBM reboot comparison, Batman Begins had a $48 million opening weekend, 2nd largest out of all the Bat movies at that time. It also went on to be the biggest grossing Batman film both domestic and worldwide until The Dark Knight annihilated every record set by any bat-film in history.

This Spider-man "too-soon" reboot is simply not living up to its predecessors as well.

@Ceejay first off SM3 left a bad taste in almost everyone's mouth so it Defiently plays a role. Spiderman 2 made less domestically. SM1 approval rating on RT is 60% thus further supporting why SM2 made less than SM1 and SM3 made the most out of all because of SM2. If the previous film was bad AND it's a too soon reboot its bound not to make as much as the previous films. TASM is the 2nd best overall with the Genereal Audince scoring A- with CinemaScore and a 84% with RT I would say its a pretty solid film with almost every Audince member. And with some it's the best out yet, I can assure you the sequel will make the most out of all and be the best out of all. Sorry but TASM just delivered and it's gonna have an Amazing sequel.
