SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2012: THE LONE RANGER Footage Description

The Lone Ranger has had a problematic (and pricey) journey to the big screen, but some brief snippets of footage were shown at Disney's Hall H presentation today and it sounds as if Gore Verbinski has truly delivered. Hit the jump for more.

Entertainment Weekly were lucky enough to be in attendance for Disney's Hall H presentation and have shared their verdict on the first footage from The Lone Ranger. According to the site, the film has a much heavier and more ominous tone than previous Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp collaboration, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Talking of Depp, there has been some controversy over the fact that he is playing a Native American and the news that his character speaks in broken English ("There come a time, Kemosabe...when good man must wear mask.") is sure to leave some riled. The site do point out that it isn't in the least bit offensive however.

The footage shown included a voice over from baddie Tom Wilkinson. "From the time of Alexander the Great, no man could travel faster than the horse that carried him. Not anymore. Imagine time and space under the mastery of man — power that makes emperors and kings look like fools. Whoever controls this, controls the future," he says as scenes of the transcontinental railroad being constructed were played. Armie Hammer's Lone Ranger was apparently shown looking "disheveled and intense," and while there were a handful of gunslinging scenes, the focus was firmly on Depp's Tonto as he was shown uncoupling a train car while hanging underneath. Helena Bonham Carter was spotted, as were some bloody and impressive train accidents. They finish their report by saying that, "Those looking for a darker take on The Lone Ranger will be pleased by the intense tone and focus on action over humor."

The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski and featuring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger, is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Depp was a great actor, and I'm sure still can be. But lately he has become a parody of himself.

At least this eases the trepidation I had been feeling a little bit.

Feeling a teensy bit more optimistic.

Seems Ok, Jonny Depp is sorta losing credibility with all of these ecentric roles and such, damn stick to more serious roles like in Public Enemies, and Blow...
he's such a chameleon like Gary Oldman, such wasted talent.

I was in Hall H for the Disney panel, and although it was just a trailer, the Lone Ranger looked pretty entertaining and indeed action oriented. I'm sure there will be definite 'Depp' moments and some Disney campyness, but the look and vibe of the trailer was much more positive than you Nolanites seem to have predetermined.

This could be good, Disney did an action movie with an intense tone before and I liked it....it was the Mark Walberg movie Invincible. So it can be done! I also wouldn't mind seeing the Rifleman on the big screen. Gotta have something else to watch in between all these superhero movies.

Im a huge Lone Ranger fan and to be honest - this scares me as it can only go one of two ways - very surprising cool or bad enough to kill the potential for a franchise for another...what 30-40 years? If you count the horrible movie from the 80s....more if you dont!

@HelaGood THANK YOU. we are over-saturated with that actor
HelaGood
HelaGood - 7/13/2012, 10:21 AM
@NorrinRaddical - and hes the same character in every film... just with a new costume or a new accent. hes not a "character actor" like most seem to think. he is a ONE character actor.
