FEATURE: Five Actresses Who Could Play Wonder Woman In JUSTICE LEAGUE

FEATURE: Five Actresses Who Could Play Wonder Woman In JUSTICE LEAGUE

Well, Justice League or her own solo movie that is! While the planned small screen series starring Adrianne Palicki never amounted to more than anything than a failed pilot, there has still been talk of the Amazonion princess getting an outing on the big screen. Here are my top five choices.

In "The New 52" continuity, it has been established that Wonder Woman is only 23 years old. In fact, during the events of the first arc of Justice League, she is only 18. For that reason, you shouldn't be too surprised that most of the actresses below are a little younger than you might expect. They're also not the 7ft tall busty types which are repeatedly suggested simply because they look the part. Instead, I have chosen those who I believe could make a Wonder Woman movie the success it deserves to be, although it's fair to say that each of these would bring something VERY different to the role (bear in mind that all of them could be made to look as big as Diana in a similar style to how Tom Hardy was enhanced as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises). Check out my top five choices below, and be sure to share your thoughts and suggestions in the usual place!

5. OLIVIA WILDE

After leaving House to pursue a career on the big screen, Olivia Wilde has shown off her blockbuster credentials in big budget fare like TRON: Legacy and Cowboys & Aliens. So, is now the right time for her to take on a franchise of her own like Wonder Woman? Well, while she may not look as if she has been torn from the pages of the comic books, Wilde's take on the iconic DC character certainly has the potential to be an interesting one. And for an origin story, she certainly has the youthful looks which would make her an ideal choice. There has already been talk of her being somehow involved with the Tomb Raider remake, so if she's considered a good choice for that role, why not Wonder Woman?

4. CHARLIZE THERON

Many of you wondered why the Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman star wasn't included on my list of potential candidates for Captain Marvel. Well, here's your answer, although whether you agree with her playing Wonder Woman is another thing altogether. Theron is an incredibly diverse actress, and while the 36-year-old is the oldest of all of those mentioned on this list, she certainly doesn't look it! In fact, the Academy Award winning beauty would arguably deliver the most convincing take on the character, while recent performances in the films mentioned above means that Wonder Woman would have an A-List performer in the starring role (not to mention the box office draw that would result in).

3. EVANGELINE LILLY

The beautiful Lost actress has been a fan favourite choice to play Wonder Woman for a while now and it's really not hard to see why. She certainly looks the part, and her time on the show mentioned above was proof enough that she's capable of playing a tough as nails female lead. Following an enjoyable turn as Hugh Jackman's love interest in Real Steel last year, Lilly will next star in this December's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (a Warner Bros. film) and presumably the two follow-up's as well, so now would be a great time for her to step up and take on a major role in the rumoured Justice League movie before perhaps starring as the character in the much talked about solo movie.

2. GEMMA ARTERTON

The British actress hasn't really had too many opportunities to show off her action skills (despite appearances in the likes of Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), but don't let that fool you. Arterton is extremely talented and underrated performances in films such as The Disappearance of Alice Creed have shown that she has some serious acting chops. In equal parts beautiful as she is talented, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment could do a lot worse than rounding out their British "Trinity" - the other two being Christian Bale's Batman and Henry Cavill's Superman - with Arterton as Wonder Woman. It's not at all difficult to imagine her convincingly portraying the heroine.

1. GINA CARANO

An obvious choice yes, but after Haywire, it would be hard to place Gina Carano anywhere other than the top of this list. While that wasn't a particularly good film all in all, the mixed martial arts fighter turned actress stole the show and was thoroughly convincing throughout. It was in fact her leading role in Haywire which eventually led to talk of her playing the Amazonian princess, and it's not difficult to understand why. With a perfect handle on action, Carano is a likeable on-screen presence and can actually act (unlike most fighters who decide to pursue a career on the big or small screen). And as if that wasn't enough, Carano also has the right build and appearance to convincingly portray Wonder Woman.

Gina is definitely the best choice from above. Sure, she's not the BEST actress but I thought she did fine in Haywire. Good enough for a Justice League movie.

I honestly don't think anyone over 30 is going to be cast in this role. No matter how young the actress may look, she probably won't be cast.

Charlize Theron is my favorite choice. She's pretty and has the body type. The other girls are a bit too lanky to look right in the WW costume... Case in point Palecki had a similar body type and look how awful she looked!

Honestly, WW has a very Mediterranean look. They need to choose someone who looks a bit ethnic that can pass for Greek. No mainstream actress mentioned on this site fits that description. They're gonna have to have a huge casting call and find an unknown like Donner did with Reeve back in the day.

WW is too important to just let any girl play her.

Also the actress must be curvy, somewhat voluptuous that can get fit but not look like a body builder.

You guys are casting a little old. They'll be casting early-to-mid twenties tops.

I think Olivia Wild could pull of a Wonder Woman that isn't just Eye-candy and actually could look tough.

have to strongly respectfully disagree with you Josh, this list is 3/5 insulting to how important the character is. if i don't have any better suggestions, it's because frankly, i'm not sure there's a wealth of strong powerful female leaders in hollywood!

thank you though for starting the dialog; let's hope filmamkers are as well (and maybe reading this article!)

as a previous article noted, i'd love to see Refn try it, but NOT with Hendricks...

It's been said over and over, but Olivia Wilde has absolutely no breasts. She would not be a good fit for the role.

@ JoshAsAMarvelfan: Headey was cool in 300 but is WAY too old for the role.

Like I said in my previous post, they'll never find the right actress in Hollywood. They need to think outside the box and cast an unknown.

I'd still say Adrianne Palicki.
She did great in the pilot, she had the right confidence, a killing body and really towered over every person on screen.

It was simply the costume that let the character down, not Palicki herself.
She's 5'11 and very talented. I say give her another shot.

A big budget movie like Justice League and a serious director would change it completely from the tv pilot.

Like the idea of Lena Headey. She is also doing another film universe with The Mortal Instruments -City of Bones, so she'll have the experencie on big projects like Wonder Women.

Lynn Collins is pushing 40 i think so she's to old, other wise she would be the perfect choice. Yvonne Strahovski could pull it off little short for WW at 5'9 but she's got the body. That's if she isn't cast as ms.marvel for avenger's 2 etc. Can't really think of a taller than 6ft actress that's actually good at acting with the voluptuous body needed for the character.

Love all these gals but they are all too short. Looks wise I would go gina carano but I don't think she has the acting chops and she's kind of a ditz in interviews

Adrienne palicki definitely a good one, it's the costume and make up that really mast bad. As an actress and height she is well qualified. Charlize also a great mature wonder woman, definitely good with black hair.

@TheBlackPhantom994, here's the thing. Regarding superhero movies featuring notable characters, you've got to think in terms of franchises. That's at least 3 movies with a minimum of 3 years between each.

The earliest we're going to see a Wonder Woman movie is 2016 or 2017. 3 films would take you into 2022-2023. So you're going to need an actress who can believably play an immortal/unaging character throughout the course of those films.

Lynn Collins was born in 1977 and would already be 38-39 by the time the first movie filmed and around 44-45 when the third one is possibly filmed.

That doesn't really work. Assuming the next DC film WB makes is in 2015 and it's Justice League, that film will go into production in 2014. And like I said before, I doubt any actress over 30 is getting this part, so anyone born before 1984 probably won't be considered.
