New Character Images From THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

Peter Jackson returns to Middle-Earth in December, this time adapting J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit. Originally set to be split into just two films, it was revealed earlier this month that there will now be THREE instalments. Seems like an awful lot for a reasonably short book, but the director reportedly had enough footage in order to stretch it out a little further and it’s thought that he may even delve into some of Tolkein’s other books in order to bridge the gap between these films and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Below are a selection of new character images from the film, uploaded by Twitter's @JonasRJakobsen.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

You can't have 13 Gimli's on screen. The audience would be confused.

Although I agree with Kili not looking like a dwarf.

Dwalin is my favorite.

Thran's crown is very....del Toro-ish. And that doesn't mean I like it. A bit too directional.

I'm guessing that the first movie will end after the eagles arrive.

Just finished reading the Hobbit again and it will totally fill three movies!! Awesome!

Wonder if they'll have all the songs in it. Then it would end up being a musical! Lol

Where's Círdan and Radagast?

Also on Thranduil's dascription it says Frodo is Bilbo'z cousin. Shouldn't it be nephew?

hmm that kinda answers my question. Funny I never thought about since I'm kind of a Tolkien buff.

"Some of them do not even look like dwarves."

I dunno...I never met an actual dwarf before. They are fictional characters, so who's to say what they actually look like. I certainly don't think they should all look the same. Where does it say that all fantasy dwarves should be dirty and hairy with big beards? Personally, I would be a bit disappointed and bored with the characters if they all had the same look, build, etc. Different strokes, I guess.

Holy Hell! What the smurf is that on Thranduil's head? Is that supposed to be a crown?! Outside of that he looks pretty boss, but man, who designed that?

Anyway, I actually like what they've done with the dwarves. They need to all look distinct from each other, and if they'd gone with the description in the book (where they all have different color beards, like blue and green and stuff) it would have looked ridiculous.

Also, the film-makers can't "delve into some of Tolkien's other books." They don't have the rights to them. They only have the rights to The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, which includes the appendices at the back of Return of the King. I'd have to go look (or someone else could confrim :p), but that might be why we don't see characters like Cirdan or Celeborn. They might not be mentioned as being White Council members in the appendices.

The dwarves are looking better and better.

But Thranduil's crown is totally wrong. These are Mirkwood elves, not Lothlorien elves. Thranduil has fought many battles. His crown and clothing should look more human and mundane and less ethereal.
