BOX OFFICE: RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION Dominates Overseas; TDKR Hits $1.066B Worldwide

Despite a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the latest instalment in the Resident Evil franchise looks set to be another hit for the studio, guaranteeing a sixth movie. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises is now #7 on the list of all-time highest grossing movies.

Resident Evil: Retribution has dominated the overseas box office this past weekend, earning $37.2 million from 74 territories during its second week of release. Despite being panned by critics, the fifth instalment in the franchise (as with the other films) has performed much better outside of North America - although it did take the #1 spot in the US last week - and out of its current total of $136.8 million, $103 million of that is from overseas. The franchise currently has a worldwide cume of over $800 million (70% of which comes from outside the US) and it's thought that this one will take that to more than $1 billion. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises has now moved into the #7 spot on the list of all-time highest grossing movies after taking its worldwide total to $1.066 billion thanks to an additional $3.8 million from 63 markets.

Why won't this franchise die, made a zombie joke and I didn't even intend too lol

Dredd won't get another sequel but this POS franchise keeps on producing movie after movie after movie.

This and that ridiculous poll here where The Punisher received more votes than 3 of the better graphic novel movies to be adapted just stand as more proof that 1.) there is no justice in the world and 2.) that American movie audiences have shitty ass taste.

i guess ramon missed where the article said 80% of Resident Evil's box office was international. Also, apparently only Americans can vote in cbm polls.

1.) I guess you missed the part where it said that the movie made #1 at the US Box Office last week.

2.) OK. I'll expand my statement to include the fact that international audiences also have no taste.

It did drop to number 5 this week though, nothing strong was really released next to it last week other than Nemo 3d I do not think though.

In my personal opinion I love going to see the RE movies. Are they good films? HELL NO, but they are fun and worth seeing in the theater for the experience. They are also the only films I will see in 3d anymore. I do not like spending money on a movie in the theater because I could just buy it on Blu-Ray for about the same price and watch it whenever I want (taking into consideration a ticket for the wife and myself) unless that movie is WORTH seeing in the theater. This means no comedies, no dramas... I want something that needs to be loud and huge. The RE movies may be bad but they deliver on that aspect and that is why they keep making money, just like the Transformers films. Once again, just my opinion as a movie lover and money lover.

Wow..RE movies are exactly what you expect, bunch of mindless action.
I enjoy that but can't really get into what little of the story there is.

I just don't care for the characters..aside from looking at hot chicks to impossible fighting it's boring.
At least DREDD is damn cool character with intense action,if Dredd movie had the budget of RE & the same box office results we could be getting more in depth into the world of Judge Dredd & all the bizzare, brutal shit he deals with.

Judge Death & The Cursed Earth are far more deadly than the goofs in RE.

I'm curious as to how many the people who are dissing the RE4 film went and saw it. Many people get lambasted here for not going and seeing a film before judging it, but its okay for certain films and not for others?

ElgUaSon@ Different strokes for different folks, but GR SOV #3 for you? Wow. I'm not sure I would put it on my top 20 CBM list for 2012 and there weren't near 20 CBM films released. That's how bad I thought it was, but to each their own. :-P

ThatWolfMan@ I thought the ending to TDKR was cliche' and meh, but we'll just tag that as another different strokes for different folks.

It's amazing how much money the Dark Knight franchise has made. Particularly with TDK and TDKR both in the top 15 and top 10 respectively of all time. What a great trilogy. Completely deserving of all the praise and financial success.

I'll admit it I went and saw Resident Evil. I'm seeing Dredd this week. I also saw the Avengers 6 times and TDKR twice. I try to balance out the one movie I know is going to be bad with a bunch of good ones. But then again I watched The Artist and then watched Battlefield Earth in one evening...

I could careless how much RE made overseas. The movie was horrible! I wish the RE franchise would die already! Anyway, glad to hear TDKR is doing well overseas.

And here come all the 11 year olds on this site jumping for joy about this success.
Can I say I'm surprised, no.. This is the same world where "just call me maybe" is played non-stop on the radio, so yeah, the shitty RE movies are going to make money...
Also, remember how much money spider-man 3 made?

However, every person I know who went to see it all agree that the plot wasn't at all good. Maybe it had some good effects, but overall not a good movie

I'm a fan of the first 2 films. 3 kinda lost me and i enjoyed 4 only because they did Wesker justice. Then they threw out this piece of crap and completely ruined not only all the work they did on him, but the entire franchise. I was hoping it would fail so badly that they ended the series after seeing this.

Btw s-m 3 dropped like a rock.

Why does rises have steady legs, beside it's second week? Hmm.....

Most people have shitty taste unless it comes to the avengers eh? You guys sound like Romney. Lol

Thankfully I've only seen RE3 and I had to stomach through it because I was out with some hottie who REALLY wanted to see it. I'll never sit through an RE film again. RE3 was the 1 exception because I got laid afterwards and I was working on that chick for a while.

Oh and great news for TDKR! Epic film. I'm actually planning on seeing it again this week at the IMAX.
