Sir Patrick Stewart Continues To Tease Return As 'Professor X'

After a nod which led many to assume that Patrick Stewart will be returning as 'Professor X' in a future X-Men movie, the actor has continued to tease (confirm?) his return as the iconic leader of the Children of the Atom! Read on for details.

Now that we know Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class sequel will be titled X-Men: Days of Future Past, the only major question remaining is whether it will tackle time travel as the comic book arc it's name after did. Well, in a panel at the 2012 Montreal Comic Convention, Sir Patrick Stewart has once again teased that there are plans for him to reprise the role of Charles Xavier (despite the fact that James McAvoy is currently portraying a much younger version of the character). If time travel is used, it would make perfect sense for the older Professor X to return. Below is an excerpt from Newsarama's in-depth highlights from the panel.

When asked directly by a fan during his Q&A panel, the Englishman gave a knowing smile and spoke the words many have been waiting to hear: "I think there is every possibility." He proceeded to enthusiastically run down the list of his female co-stars: "Halle Berry! Famke Janssen! Rebecca Stamos! Anna Paquin!" The crowd roared back with delight, opting not to point out his mistake regarding Rebecca Romijn’s current last name. He continued, saying "yes, I’ll be reprising..." only to be cut off by his son Daniel, who proceeded to throw out the names of his father’s male co-stars, Hugh Jackman and Sir Ian McKellen.

How would you guys feel about the return of Patrick Stewart's Professor X? After the mess that was Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand, it may just be better to leave the previous franchise well alone, although Matthew Vaughn showed that he at least has some interest in tying the two together after recreating the opening scene from X-Men in X-Men: First Class. Sound off with your thoughts and theories in the usual place!

Honestly I was expecting a breaking report of someone screamiing at him from across the street, 'Professor X you're alive!' and he gives a thumps up.

I'd really want to see him again as Prof X. Personally I didn't get enough, considering it is the best casting of any superhero(maybe of any adapted work) I've ever seen on film. Despite hiim being english, which didn't bother me in the least.

As far as him naming the other actors, it didn't seem conclusive at all in the article.

But he didn't name Marsters, which is the second best casting in their series(3rd overall after Stewart and Fassbender)although he was cut off.

You know...what to hell with it.

Frasier for the win.

I really hope this is true. I would like to see the continuity issues fixed and a reprisal by the best actors from the original trilogy.

I would love him to reprise his iconic part as PX.

With a well made up time travel story they really could fix the continuity issues and tie the whole franchise (which currently seems to consist of 2-3 subfranchies) back together especially if The Wolverine really will be placed after X3:TLS.

But since most/all of the recently raised continuity issues could have been prevented by decent writing in the first place I doupt they can but things together well enouhg. So sad.

That's cool but I'd like to see them use time travel to bring back Cyclops, and maybe even give him something to do this time around.

Oh this will be interesting. Will the future Xavier remember the times he spent sitting on the sofa chatting with Mystique?

Love him as the Professor but hopefully he doesnt look like he's made of silly putty this time @TheCaptain First Class had some heart and the Magneto stuff was great but i felt overall it was a rape of the characters and a nightmare for continuity.

He will be in the film and there will be time travel involved: Captain Picard slingshots the Enterprise around the sun and comes to earths past in search of two whales.

How do you put the two Xaviers together on screen at the same time? Especially with their voices being so different from each other. How do you explain that one? Did Stewart go back in time and kick his younger self in the balls?

Bring it on. Bring back a new Rogue with a new story since that really wasn't Rogue at all. Just say that Anna Paquin was some random character who called herself Rogue, but wasn't the real Rogue from the comics that we all know and love more than life itself. Please, Rogue, come back to us in the form of a sassy southern fried pretty bird with an attitude. Yeah that is right. And have her intentions be a mystery and her lack of compassion present. Oh and also allow her to take Flight please. Thanks a lot.

I truthfully don't care if they end up tying ALL of the X-Men films together to fix the multiple continuity issues, so long as The Wolverine and Days of Future Past are good in their own right.
That, and they leave X-Men Origins: Wolverine out of the mix, because it truly is an abominable mess. I can tolerate The Last Stand, since there are quite a few good moments in there, but Origins is best left forgotten and out of continuity.

T'would be very cool if done right. It's pretty easy- and my goodness it's happening in the comics right now too. Coincidence? I love that this article basically makes Patrick Stewart out to be a giddy old man that gets shut down. Poor guy. He's the best! Strong psychics + robot empire = time travel plot. Now just to figure out the how and why. Phoenix is a good guess and all I have is Senator Kelly's death being a turning point in the Sentinel Arms race. Maybe Phoenix nearly levelling San Francisco is a good enough reason for the Sentinel program to begin hunting/exterminating mutants. WITH PREJUDICE!

Fox has got to get a clue! Hopefully the success of The Avengers will translate into exactly that for them. It would be great to see Sir Patrick back in the chair, especially in an awesome continuity-correcting time-traveling epic X-Men movie! More than that I want to see a strong heroic Cyclops as apposed to the wimpy/weepy emo Scott Summers we've had to suffer. I wouldn't even mind if Marsden came back for the role. I think he can handle it IF the writers will write it.

I also want less emphsis on Magneto and Wolverine. There's so much more to the X-Universe. Though I realize it'll be awhile before we see less Magneto. Fassbinder was soooo good in First Class.

This is coming together quite splendidly. I'm guessing the government implemented the Sentinel program after they witness what mutants can do during X-3. Lots of windows are open, this could end up being a very, very good movie.

It's been mentioned quite a lot that X-Men The Last Stand and X-Men Origins Wolverine are being ignored, and this would fit in with that, as would The Wolverine.

I can imagine that since time travel will be involved, it may result in past Charles, Erik and co being transported to the present day and maybe ever replacing the current versions of their characters (taking cues from Avengers Vs X-Men and Marvel NOW? Professor X dies? X-Men from the past travel forward in time to the present?)

Anyway, whatever they do, I'll be very excited to see Patrick Stewart Professor X and James McAvoy Professor X share the screen with each other, I loved both versions of the character. And if we see Fassbender's Magneto meet McKellen's Magneto, even better!
