VIDEO GAMES: Big Screen Adaptation Of GEARS OF WAR Moving Ahead

Following the news that Battlefield: Bad Company is being brought to the small screen, it has now been revealed that plans to turn Epic Games' Gears of War into a movie (it has also been a DC Comics series) have now been revived.

Gears of War has been in development since 2007, with Len Wiseman (Total Recall) at one point attached to direct. However, the film was put on hold as New Line instead decided to focus on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. Well, Variety now reports that, "Creative Artists Agency is eager to meet with producers in the coming weeks and set up the project elsewhere," and that Stuart Beattie's (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide) screenplay is currently being considered as the one to move ahead with. Epic Games will reportedly be involved to consult on the adaptation in order to, "make sure it ties into the canon established by the games and books."

I'd love to see a good Gears movie. I loved this series, and it has the power to be a huge blockbuster movie if done right.

Cole, Baird, Dom and Marcus have to be done right for this movie to succeed.

If ever a franchise did not need a movie adaptation, it would be this one. The games are far greater than a movie could ever be. See: Doom.

Guh. This sounds like a big fat turd in the making. Maybe there's a video game you could successfully make into a movie, but it would have to be a game that was story-focused rather than gameplay-focused, because...duh.

Unless some obscenely skilled/lucky director gets hold of these properties, a Gears of War movie will probably be shit. A HALO movie will almost certainly be shit (hooray for a completely uncharacterized protagonist alienating reviewers out of the gate).

Make a movie out of the Witcher franchise or something. That has world-building and intricate plotting out the ass. The shooter genre historically just does not have standout stories when you set aside the gameplay, and a story is all you have in a film adaptation. If they try to "improve" one of the mindless "now go on this mission" plotlines, butthurt fans will sink the film. If they try to recreate the game plot exactly, it'll just seem cliched and dull.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE gears. But if anyone needs to focus on video game movie that movie is Halo. Period. End of debate. Second is probably Assassins Creed, and then I can see Gears. But a Gears movie doesn't discount a possible halo, I just really want to hear this news for halo instead. Still, hope they don't make it uber cheesy

i think it's going to motion capture (like polar express, beowulf.etc) because real actors can't be as big as the characters in gears.

There are a lot of news that video game movies are in development, and I hope that they actually work out now. They are the logical next step to look towards to adapt, because they already have a built-in fanbase and enough elements to make for a successful movie. I just hope they happen. Assassin's Creed got the closest when Michael Fassbender was announced to star, but word has been quiet since then. I hope that Gears of War can get its feet on the ground and actually film the movie

if that happens, then Lester has to play Cole Train, as he is Cole Train lol

I think Gears could make a cool movie, but the chances of failure are far too great! Look what the Blood Rayne movies did! Uwe Toilet bowl ruined that game franchise! Keep that bastard far away from Metal Gear Solid, and Gears of War!

One thing that this movie needs to succeed is some serious talent actors wise. I nominate Josh Brolin for Marcus.

I did know BF:BC was gonna be on TV! Well GOW movie could be either very good or very bad depends on how it's handled. Video game movies are very trickey and there is a lot to be said about them, VGMs can be the next CBMs if they're invested in properly and exucuted with all seriousness. Asassins creed is currently the only VGM in production and it already has a leading role(Fassbender) which is very promising SO FAR.... Anyways everyone is right Halo is the center of all this, halo NEEDS a movie desperately becasue it's so rich in story but halo will only be a huge success as a movie if people are actually interested in a VGM for example The avengers would not be such a monumental success in the 1970s or anytime before that becasue there was a lack of CBMs and the ones that were out we're very bad. So if asassins creed gets a good director and cast/crew it should generate a substantial amount of interest in VGMs. Ubisoft is pretty much the marvel studios of video games becasue they're in charge of everything but distribution which Sony is doing. Once GOW and asassins creed are successful then maybe people will crave halo and studios(whichever owns the rights to halo) will see what kind of opportunity they have. Here's to hoping this VGMs work out well

This could actually translate easier to the big screen compared to other video game movie adaptions.

You got big guys, big guns, and big action. Pretty standard action movie formula.

I hope they do the video games justice!

I think Gears of War is cool but I just don't see it being an interesting movie. Gears in my eyes would be too tricky, now as far as Halo goes, I don't like the games. Never got into them, so unless they get interesting people on the project, I'm not going to watch it. Hell, the only videogame adaptation I'm worrying about is Mortal Kombat. The reason being it's my favorite videogame and videogame franchise. Warner Bros. needs to get their shit straight and get a more worthy writer and director on the project, problem is I think Kevin Tancharoen is the only guy interested in making it for the sake of making a faithful adaptation which sucks really because his vision and his take on it isn't good. The web series is ok but he wants it real and that just isn't Mortal Kombat. I'd be happy with the original two and no reboot than a reboot that isn't going to be faithful.

Back to topic. Gears COULD be good but I just don't see it happening and Halo I have NO interest in.

Even if this gets made, they're not gonna find actors with small enough heads.

This would be cool, if done right, but I read a while-back that they wanted the "director" from Twilight. Um...yeah, Twilight and wouldn't all the "actors" be "wrestlers?" Or am I wrong? Just something I read...

Yeah and one-more-thing: When is Devil May Cry going into production? Do they even have a cast yet? Anybody know or hear anything about it? Thanks!
