Robert Downey Jr. Spotted Wearing Mo-Cap Suit On The Set Of IRON MAN 3

As filming continues on Shane Black's Iron Man 3 in Dania Beach, Florida, a new batch of set photos don't reveal too much, but they DO offer up a look at Robert Downey Jr. arriving on set in a mo-cap suit and the Iron Man and Iron Patriot armors from a distance. Check it out!

Will this be Robert Downey Jr.’s final Iron Man movie? It’s the last one he’s contracted to do with Marvel Studios (bet they’re regretting that cameo in The Incredible Hulk now), but after the success of The Avengers (which featured both the actor and character at the forefront of marketing) it’s hard to imagine that this will truly be his last outing as the Armoured Avenger. The threequel is helmed by Shane Black and sees Iron Man take on both the threat of Extremis and the Mandarin, while Rhodey dons the Iron Patriot suit for reasons currently unknown. Regardless, thanks to The Comics Factory (and our own @Marvel_Freshman) , we have this new batch of set photos from Dania Beach in Florida. As you can see, there's nothing too revealing here, but with less than two weeks to go until the release of the first theatrical trailer, it should keep us going for the time being!

STARRING:

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert
James Badge Dale as Eric Savin
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan

RELEASE DATE: May 3rd, 2013.

Can't wait. I hope Downey sticks around at least till Avengers 2. Then they can recast him if he doesn't want to do it any more. It wouldn't be smart for him to stop doing them though. The Avengers was the biggest movie he was ever in, so you'd think if the franchise gave you more money you'd stick with it.

Yep. This will surely be the best out of the Iron-Man films. As said many, many, many times before by CBMers, BRING ON PHASE 2!! :D

@superotherside - Indeed, dude. RDJ was a great-on casting choice for Iron-Man/Tony Stark, so I cannot think of any other actors taking that role. But soon RDJ is gonna reach that limit where he might not be able to do that much MCU films. And if he leaves, then at least he leaves behind a mark/legacy on the BIG MCU films and the Iron-Man films. RDJ FTW! :)

I'm glad to have this movie, but as we move into Phase 3, I would hate to see Iron Man 4, keep Downey contracted, but have him play a role in someone else's movie and pass the torch

I'm pumped for IM3! I doubt if Robert Downey Jr. backs out after IM3. I'm pretty sure he will return for The Avengers 2 & The Avengers 3.

@Nomis

I'm 30, so in internet terms, I'm geriatric. :P Lazenby is a great example for what you just stated, however he was in one of the better Bond films. I always found that interesting. I really want this to be the best comic book movie of 2013!

My friend lives across the street from the Miami Beach set. We almost met him, but I got more than I bargained for: he gave me the peace sign! Apparently, they were shooting with Tony and The Mandarin. Kingsley was in full costume and he's got a ponytail. That is literally all we were able to get from people there.

NoAssemblyReqd - 10/10/2012, 3:07 PM
I'd rather they retire the character (Stark, not Iron Man) than try to recast him if RDJ decides to stop portraying him. I want the MCU characters and their world to grow and age, even if it means the stories no longer follow the canon of the comics. Recasting or de-aging the characters (except, perhaps, Cap) would feel too much like a cheat.

Whoever's at NYCC, you guys better get your cameras ready!!! Or else Taken 3 will be arriving earlier than expected...

I'm confident that RDJ will be back as Stark in at least Avengers 2. I am of the opinion that when he's done, do not recast. No one could do it like him, it would be like recasting Indiana Jones or Han Solo. Get rid of Stark as a character at that point. If you still want Iron Man, have Rhodey or someone else take over the role.

At the end of Avengers 2 they should have Tony Stark decide that he's getting too old for this stuff, then have another character use the suit and become Iron Man. Then RDJ could make some awesome cameo as a recruitment person for SHIELD or something. Then it wouldn't be replacing him or rebooting him. Boom. There ya go.

@Nomis

:P Totally agree. That's why the anomalous On Her Majesty's Secret Service is fascinating to me; good movie, just not the recasting of Bond. Then they get Connery back. The only Bonds I've seen in the theatre are Moore, Dalton & Craig; never got to a Brosnan one oddly enough. But yeah, I really fear whatever poor actor they recast as Stark. RDJ is Iron Man.

No matter how much I like RDJ as Stark/Iron Man I would rather he finish on a high then to just keep playing the character for the fans sake. No matter who takes the title after they will never be Tony Stark but I will welcome them with open arms, because the one thing Marvel has got right is the casting of all there characters imo.

TheGambitFreak - 10/10/2012, 3:35 PM
Well RDJ has said it himself he wants to play Iron Man till the day he dies so...

Besides, when RDJ finally gives up the mantle, Dominic Cooper will be there to take the throne.

Dominic Cooper
Dominic Cooper

Sure he played Papa Stark, but I'll be damned if he wouldn't make a good replacement.

Iron Man 141

But hey, Avengers 2 comes out in 2015, and RDJ won't be done with Iron Man yet, trust me, as long as CGI evolves and he still wants to be Himself Tony Stark, you can make damn sure well he will be.

As Mr. Stark said in Avengers, "Live in the moment."

Kevinwillpeabodyproperties - 10/10/2012, 3:44 PM
I'm starting to think iron man will die in avengers 2. i just don't see them bringing back downey jr on a new contract especially since he now gets a portion of all the success and his contract runs out after avengers 2. scarlett and jeremy renner have very affordable deals so I don't think they will kill them off. I could also see them kill captain america since his deal runs out soon and then have sebastian stan(Bucky), who is signed for 6 movies take over the role like in the comics. someone major has to die!

- it won't be Thor obviously( you can't replace Thor lol)
- won't be the Hulk obviously because they are planning a planet hulk for phase 3( supposedly but I could deff see that happening)
- they could deff kill nick fury but that does not help to cut the team down from being overcrowded, especially when ms. marvel is added which is happening. I see them adding 2 characters per phase.

ms.marvel and ant man for phase 1

maybe black panther or dr. strange (male) wasp (female)

thoughts?

TheAmazingSpidey63 Yep, who ever has to replace RDJ, is going to have HUGE shoes to feel. Dominic Cooper would be perfect if he has to be replaced though. Great actor, who could do his own spin on Tony yet gain a wide acceptance from the fans because of him playing Howard.
TheMightyTroy
TheMightyTroy - 10/10/2012, 3:57 PM
I dont see why RDJ would stop playing Iron Man unless he physically couldnt lol I mean look at the attention he gets for the role, as if he'd give that up! Also age shouldnt matter, if he can still act and still embody Tony Stark like he does, then he's still the perfect Iron man and will keep playing him. I think he'll keep playing him after IM3 and Avengers 2.
