Well, I think it's fair to say that none of us will have seen this coming! Deadline is reporting that Matthew Vaughn has decided not to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past for 20th Century Fox. Instead, it is thought that his next project will be the big screen adaptation of The Secret Service, a comic book series which he co-plotted with writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and artist Dave Gibbons (Watchmen). With a release date set for July 18th, 2014, the studio are on the hunt for a new director to take on the X-Men: First Class sequel, and atop their list is none other than X-Men and X-2 helmer, Bryan Singer. Matthew Vaughn will still produce.

Why is the knee-jerk reaction to blame the studio for a director's personal choice?

Why did he decide not to direct?

An Singer would be okay with me.

Singer directed what is imo the best X-Men movie yet, X-men 2..but, Vaughn came pretty damn close with First Class and since this is a direct sequel I'm disappointed that he won't be back. I also doubt Singer will replace him, I think it will end up being someone else..Ratner maybe? That would be cool.

Well, shit. FC was by far the best of the X-Men movies (and that's not saying much, but still...) and Singer is a HACK so if this really happens, no money from me FOX.

I wanted Matthew Vaughn as the director of X-Men: Days of Future Past. But at least Fox might hire Bryan Singer. I really enjoyed X2:X-Men United.

Brian Singer was too serious in X-men and X2 even Brett was more 'colorful' to represent a comic book universe...

I think what pisses me off most is that Millar, the man responsible for bringing up the Fox/Marvel Universe, is the one that has given it its biggest blow with this. I'm okay with Singer, as long as he keeps a visual consistency with Vaughn's FC.

Makes sense. If this movie is bridging the gap between both franchises, it's fitting for Singer to be back at the helm.

Despite not directing First Class, he did write the story for it and was the producer. And up until Vaughn was hired, he was going to be the director. So creatively, First Class was still his film.

I'm looking forward to it if it comes to pass.

I'm not opposed to Singer reclaiming the franchise (even if it is just for this movie) but I want to see someone else's take on it.

I liked Singer's work on X-Men, but Vaughn dropping out of what could be the best installment in the series?

This does seem odd considering Mark Millars role in the development of fox'smarvel properties. He could have set a brilliant precednt by working with his friend on the sequel to a good xmen film. I know secret service is a passion project but it could have waited, strike while the irons hot with xmen now that it seems to be relevant again.
