Kevin Feige Talks IRON MAN 3; Comments On Cameos, 'Iron Patriot', 'The Mandarin' And More

Iron Man 3 producer and Marvel chief Kevin Feige talks in detail about Robert Downey Jr.'s on-set injury, the destruction of Tony Stark's Malibu mansion, the chances of any cameos by Earth's Mightiest Heroes, re-imagining 'The Mandarin', introducing 'Iron Patriot' and much more!

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has talked in detail about what fans should expect from the third instalment of the Iron Man franchise (presumably talking to the magazine ahead of a future feature on the movie). Below are a few key excerpts, but more can be found by picking up the latest issue which goes on sale in the UK on Wednesday.

On Robert Downey Jr.'s On-Set Injury Earlier This Year:

Robert is very gung-ho about doing his own stunts, but he's also very safety conscious and aware of his limitations. He wasn't even attempting to do anything above or beyond what would be considered safe - it was just a wire-assisted leap from one platform to another, and he came down in the wring position on that ankle. It was a good old fashioned accident. The silver lining was that Shane started to work on the cut and continued to work on the script, and hone and refine the movie itself.

On The Destruction Of Tony Stark's Mansion In Malibu:

It's an amazing sequence. The first time we looked at an animatic of that sequence was well over a year ago. It was one of the first signs that Shane was going to bring a level of spectacle you hadn't necessarily seen before, as well as all the Shane Blackisms that this movie is chock-full of.

On Increasing The "Risk" Factor For Iron Man 3:

Avengers was a risk. Casting Robert Downey was a risk. We like taking those kinds of risks, and Iron Man 3 is full of risks. I wouldn't say those risks were ratcheted up or down because of the success of The Avengers. It basically boosted our confidence that the risky way to go is often the best way to go.

On Where The Movie Picks Up With Tony Stark After The Events Of The Avengers:

This is all about how he was affected by the events of The Avengers, and how his world and mindset can be affected by that. By the end of Avengers, when a portal is opened up in Manhattan and he's met Thor and The Hulk and the Chitauri are coming down on him, he realises that he doesn't know everything; we think that has had an effect on his psyche, and then his world is blown out from underneath him.

On Including 'The Mandarin' In The Movie And His Role In The Threequel:

Early - and very late - drafts of Iron Man 1 featured The Mandarin as a villain. The Mandarin is his most famous foe in the comics mainly because he's been around the longest. If you look, there's not necessarily a definitive Mandarin storyline in the comics. So it was really about having an idea. In terms of the Fu Manchu stereotyping that was involved, we never had any interest in that. He's relentless. Assuming that he's the one responsible for what happens to Tony's house, no other villain has been able to strike that fast and that hard at one of our heroes. He's very much about believing that the world needs to learn, and he wants to bend the world to his vision.

On The Reason For 'Rhodey' Suiting Up As 'Iron Patriot':

The notion in the movie is that a red, white and blue suit is a bold statement, and it's meant to be. With Rhodey, he's very much the foil to Tony's eccentricities, and in this one you get to see this and be reminded of the trust and friendship between them in that great Shane Black buddy-cop fashion.

On Whether Iron Man 3 Will Feature Any Cameos From The Rest Of Earth's Mightiest Heroes:

Iron Man 3 doesn't feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had. You have to keep in mind that Iron Man 3 had been in the works for almost a year, year and a half before The Avengers was released. We're sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together.

On Making This The BIGGEST Iron Man Movie Yet:

There's more suit action in Iron Man 3 than there is in any of the other movies. But there's also more Tony Stark action - just Tony as Tony when he's not in the suit - in Iron Man 3.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

What I'm getting from this is: "We're taking Avengers Tony, mixing it with Iron Man 2 and pumping it full of steroids."

This could be epic or horrible.

Oh well, I'm lying if I say I'm not sure I'm gonna see it, they bought my ticket for me when Iron Man 1 came out.

Of course, there ARE new elements and such, but some things appear to be the same. Only time will tell if it's gonna be the best like everyone says. I really hope it will be. :)

Awesome! Can't wait. Glad they make Tony be affected by Avengers instead of just oh well what else is new... he now realizes he doesn't understand everything and isn't the strongest person out there.

Hoping that part of the inspiration for Tony's Extremis armor experiments is Mjolnir, because, hey, how does that hammer just magically fly back to that guy's hand, anyway?

They've lied before about cameos, or added them after the fact. So they may still be in the movie, especially as a tranition at the end, or after credits.

@Xiim:

"Duh." Hmmm.

I don't think that Tony Stark would be satisfied with your answer, "It flies because of magic." Furthermore, as the MCU Thor himself has put it, more or less, where he comes from science and magic are one and the same. So you tell me why Stark wouldn't ponder the mechanism that makes Mjolnir return to the hand of Thor.

Yeah... I was never a fan of the whole "Iron Patriot" thing. I want Rhodey to go back to being War Machine so fans can see a "U.S.Agent, War Machine, and Thunderstrike thing" in a future Avengers sequel.

@batfan175

If anything, these films are anti-militarism (which I highly disprove of, peace is all about having a bigger stick than the other guy). They're all about how weapons manufacturing is bad and how the army is trying to steal the Iron Man technology so they can use it. But most Hollywood movies have some kind of liberal message in them. At least it is very very faint in these movies. Hollywood people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to politics most of the time anyway, so you just have to look past that and watch the movie for entertainment. I love the Iron Man movies because they're good movies! TDKR also has some liberal messages in it (the democratic idea that rich people must be evil, which is of course ridiculous) but i still love that movie because it's awesome. You shouldn't watch movies because you vote for the same people as the producers, and you shouldn't vote for people because filmmakers you admire do. Politics and film are two very separate things.

dragonJP
dragonJP - 11/26/2012, 9:47 PM
If this is indeed "Phase 2," you can count on some kind of Marvel Universe references or cameos to be involved in IM3. Maybe very obscure, like the SHIELD screens of hotspots from IM2... Feige "wouldn't want to ruin the surprise" so early in the game would he? I'm hopin' to see potential future Avengers, like Janet "WASP" van Dyne, Carol "MS. MARVEL" Danvers, and Hank "ANTMAN" Pym, in non-superheroic appearances. WOULDN'T THAT BE A GREAT LEAD-IN TO EDGAR WRIGHT'S ANTMAN? (Nathan Fillion, 'nuff said.)... and wouldn't we all go nuts to see a closing credits sequence showing Agent Coulson coming back as the VISION? Hmmn... maybe too soon... end of Avengers 2?
