George Lucas Clarifies His Role As "Consultant" On The New STAR WARS Trilogy

George Lucas talks more about his role as "Consultant" on Star Wars Episode VII and comments on those Steven Spielberg rumors. We also have the fourth instalment in the series of video interviews with Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy, titled: "Reflecting on the Star Wars Phenomenon". Check it out!

Access Hollywood managed to get a few words with George Lucas at the Governor's Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday and quizzed him on what exactly his role as "Consultant" means for Star Wars Episode VII and beyond. After the mostly disastrous prequels, many fans have met the idea of Lucas having ANY involvement with the new movies with a great deal of trepidation (despite him creating the beloved universe and characters). "[If the filmmakers ask],‘Who’s this guy?’ I can tell them. I mean, they have a hundred encyclopedias and things, but I actually know a lot. I can say, ‘This is this and this is that.’" In other words, "Basically I’m not — I don’t really have much to do," he added. As for those recent reports about Steven Spielberg helming Episode VII, Lucas was also quick to dismiss the idea, stating: "I’m pretty sure he’d never want to do that!"

When asked if he’d give his blessing for Steven to direct a “Star Wars” film if the director ever has a change of heart.

Lucas doesn't say, "Yes."

Lucas said, “I don’t think he’d want to.”

Well that sounds like he wouldn't give Steven Spielberg his blessing.

"Episode 3 was without a doubt the second best Star Wars ever behind Empire"

Without a doubt? Episode 3 is the best prequel episode out of the prequels by default. It's just better than the previous two films. The tone of EP3 is where the prequels should have STARTED.

The Empire Strikes Back
A NEW HOPE
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
the great depression of 99

And I've seen the animated movie.

@NeoBaggins

yep, E1 is definitely the worst(used to hate E2 more, but now...ugh). and somehow it got even worse with age(so it's the opposite of Episode 4,which got better).

Whoa whoa whoa. Wait a minute. George Lucas is saying he's just there as a source of information about Star Wars lore? Isn't he the guy who in the BTS stuff called Jar Jar's race the "Gunga's" over and over again (instead of Gungans)?

Or how he's admitted that he has no idea why Anakin has a scar on his face? He just did it because George Howard told him to?

While Lucas may have come up with some great ideas, he's shown a bunch of times that he doesn't know much about the SW universe as a whole. The more I find out about the series, the more I think that it was Gary Kurtz who actually made Star Wars, you know, actually good.

Seriously, I liked it better when we thought Lucas was coming up with basic ideas that would subsequently be filtered by the rest of the production crew. If he's advising them on the history and lore, he's probably going to cause even more continutity errors and get us nerds even more riled up.

@GrayMatter

Can you provide a link to GL talking about the gungans? Thanks

Also, the scar has been explained in the old clone wars cartoon series.

If anything, what "fans" of Star Wars lack these days is imagination.

@Kalel219 - I don't know which documentary it's in. I only picked up on it after watching the RedLetterMedia review of the Phantom Menace. I highly recommend everyone watch it. Here's the clip regarding Lucas mispronouncing the race's name in his own movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORWPCCzSgu0&feature=BFa&list=PL5919C8DE6F720A2D

Starts at about 2:24 of the video.

Oh, and the scar wasn't explained in the old clone wars cartoon. He just randomly had it in one scene. But I wish that it was explained in that show, cuz it would have backed my point up even more. Cuz if it was explained in a relatively prominent piece of media like that, it would have made Lucas look like even more of a toolbag for not knowing the scar's origins.

As it is, I would normally be willing to cut Lucas some slack on not knowing the scar's origin in some random comic book or whatever it was. Except that the scar is definitely canon since it's in Ep III, and right now it's his job to know his own universe so he can be consulted about it for the new movies.

When making a Star Wars movie list, I would still put the EWOKS movies ahead of Episodes I & II...no one ever remembers Battle for Endor or Caravan of Courage. Yes, they are spin-offs, but they are still Star Wars movies

...just thought I'd throw that out there ;-)

ComicFan523
ComicFan523 - 12/4/2012, 9:16 AM
I used to like Revenge of the Sith more than Return of the Jedi but now I think that while Return of the Jedi is definitely the weakest of the original films, it's still slightly better than episode three. That music number that Lucas put in at Jabba's Palace in the special edition is painful to watch. I think he's better suited for a consulting role; he has great ideas and knows how to come up with great stories but, as evidenced by the prequels, I think he has some trouble in translating those ideas to the big screen.

I would like to see some spin-offs like those two come out of this new trilogy. Maybe make a movie similar to the new 1313 game. Take us to places that we have never been to or seen in a game or movie.

Haters, Haters everywhere!

I am not specially a fan of the guy but this thread is completely full of hate. Any of us would be grateful to pick the corn out of Luca's turds. I advise everyone to take two steps and be grateful for a change.

He is already out of the picture, why continue the whining and bad feelings?

Thanks George, SO LONG GEORGE.

Nuff said.

Isn´t this the third time GL tones down his involvement??

hasn´t it been like 3 times Disney execs say Lucas is VERY VERY involved???

jeez, they should just stick to what the Lucasfilm purchase contract says! is it public to read? if it isn´t, then show the part where it says:

.." The shareholder (G.Lucas) will have a PIVOTAL role as a Consultant.." other than that..

@Intruder lol Where does he get those wonderful gifs?

@l0rdleg0las The reason why I can't choose Sith over Return, regardless of the teddy bear army, is because of the Emperor, Jabba the Hutt and a galactic dogfight made with models that shits on anything ever created with a computer. All of the original STAR WARS films are memorable classics. None of the prequels are better than any of the original films. They lack the narrative, comedy and sense of peril of the originals. Bad movies are capable of providing these elements. That's why I think Disney is about to go ham with STAR WARS. Can't wait.
