In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Martin Freeman was asked about his experience filming the next instalment of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy; The Desolation of Smaug. "I'm Scrooge McBaggins," the actor (who plays Bilbo Baggins in the franchise) jokingly said about working on the set seen in the official still above. "It's about a million pieces. It's the biggest pile of gold I've ever seen! Well, obviously - I'm not used to hanging out in big piles of gold! They're all fake, obviously, but it was a big eff-off pile of gold made it very hard to walk on." Guarding that gold is none other than 'Smaug the Terrible', the dragon we caught a very brief glimpse of both at the beginning and end of this month's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

And that is of course where Star Trek Into Darkness' Benedict Cumberbatch comes in. "We weren't in the same room together," the British actor revealed, confirming that he didn't have actually get to have any sort of reunion with his Sherlock co-star on set while providing the voice of Smaug. "If Martin had been there, I would have wanted to play off him, but there are size issues. Smaug is bigger than the hobbit - I think I can say that! This isn't the riddles scene. It's slightly different, it's intricate. Smaug doesn't engage with the Hobbit the same way as Smeagol does. Smeagol gets drawn in, whereas Smaug is on much more of an ego trip. He likes to feel dominant at all times, and because of what he's capable of, he is." The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set to be released on December 13th, 2013.

part Two is going to be great! This series is off to a phenomenal start! The first film was incredible and I still don't understand the hate for it from the critics.

The first one was great and I'm sure the second one will be even better! Can't freaking wait - just sucks that we have to wait a year to see it.

First one was pretty good. The Smaug tease at the end was definitely enough to get me excited for part 2.

I think the scene between these two will be terrible. The fact that you didn't record this scene with both of them together is an insult. They have amazing chemistry, which is apparent to anyone who has ever seen an episode of sherlock. The fact that in such an iconic scene from such an iconic book, two great actors with a history of working together so well were not seated across from one another is a slap in the face to all fans

I'm really starting to notice a trend among Fanboys. Saw this movie last night and it was great but this series is the star wars prequel of LOTR

@Spidey31 I'm glad that you think The Hobbit is great...However I don't know why you lumped it in with the Star Wars prequels? The Hobbit is one of the best movies of the last decade for sure!

@NYCgeekDad I understand that it's something different, but you have to remember that Smaug is a dragon.

That one scene between Bilbo and Smaug will really make or break the movie for me. The '77 movie definitely spoiled me with that.

@forceoflegend I throughout it was great, it Truley was. My statement regarding the SW prequels was a comparison to the critical reception of the two

Sherlock high as [frick], thinking he's a dragon and sh*t. And go home, John, you're drunk.

I really can't wait for this. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was fantastic.

@NYCgeekDad whats with the hate? Even Cumberbatch agrees that its the way to go since its a different scene to that of Riddles in the dark.....where Bilbo was able to get the upperhand over smeagol (Andy being on set with Freeman).... But this is different as Smaug is large and terrifying and im assuming his voice would need tweaking anyways so cant really be on set.

NYCgeekDad - love that you hate before the previews are even out.. going by statements made by actors that have worked with each other, (that express the dynamic worked even better btw). why hate just enjoy
