J.J. Abrams Was Offered STAR WARS: EPISODE VII; He And Chris Pine Comment On New Trilogy

Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams talks here about turning down the opportunity to be involved with Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars Episode VII, but also expresses his excitement to check out the new franchise. Chris Pine (Captain Kirk) weighs in with his thoughts too!

The latest Empire Magazine features a lengthy feature on Star Trek Into Darkness, but it should come as no surprise that a certain other sci-fi franchise was brought up during their conversations with the cast and crew. When Chris Pine was asked to share his thoughts on whether he would be interested in being involved with the new films, he was quick to point out that he's committed to another franchise right now. "I'm committed to three. That's the contract I signed. And as far as I know, everyone else is in the same situation. But there's obviously room for both Star Trek and Star Wars," he added. "We both have plenty of things to offer sci-fi. But I'm not saying any more that that! There are more than enough Star Wars stories around at the moment!"

J.J. Abrams has already taken himself out of the running when speculation as to who should helm Star Wars Episode VII was at an all-time high last month, but reveals here that he was at one point asked to be involved with the highly anticipated film from Disney. "There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them." The studio are clearly setting their sights pretty high if they at some point offered the gig to Abrams, but as we near the new Year, we still don't know who will sit in the director's chair (Matthew Vaughn is thought to be the favourite).

"I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead," laughed the director when the magazine put the idea forward that the next instalment in the Star Trek franchise could end up facing off against one of the new Star Wars movies. "I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands." For more, be sure to pick up the latest issue of Empire when it hits stands on December 27th.

No man should be in control of both Star Trek and Star Wars. Thats too much power. Still rooting for Vaughn to get the job

The script is way more important than the director for the new Star Wars movie!!! But JJ would have been just about the best choice.

God no M Night Shymalan. He had two good movies if that, I hate saying it because I loved signs but God No.

Vaughn would be a great choice and Abrams is just so amazing at bringing the audience in his cinema masterpieces he would be a great choice. They will be smart bout this, I really hope they are.

I was hoping that J.J, Abrams would helm Star Wars Episode 7. But Matthew Vaughn is a good film director. So he would do a good job directing Star Wars Episode 7. If not Matthew Vaughn then Gary Ross would be another good choice.

Whaaaaaa?????

Give me a break. There are a few directors which would fall under "clearly high" but Abrams is not one of them.

It would just be too much of a conflict to do both Star Wars and Trek. Not that Abraams couldn't do it but it needs to be different, needs to come from a different perspective.

David Fincher used to work for ILM, including on ROTJ. So that's why his name keeps coming up.

I'm a huge Mathew Vaughn fan!

But let's have reality check on him!

Q- Will he be able to make a good / great Star Wars film?
A- HELL YES!

Q- Will he be able to make a Star Wars film?
A- I don't know!

That's the problem!!

He's a very very incompetent director when it comes to commitment!

So even if it's officially announced that Vaughn is the director for new Star Wars film!
That wouldn't mean anything given Vaughns track record of running away the project at the last time!

He was picked for X:Men 3, he was busy with pre-production & few weeks before shooting begins; He left the project!
& X:Men - the Last Stand happened with Bret Rattner!

He then made an amazing Kick Ass & then made X Men First Class & then ran away from making a sequel even after being on board for a long time!

So if he ran away after being officially on board for Star Wars!
That's fvcking crazy to even think!

So I don't think Disney of all can take a risk that big with a guy like that; he a good director!
We have plenty other as good & even better director than him to helm Star Wars!

Brad Bird would be perfect! But he's not doing!
Then Spielberg; he's not doing as well!
Whedon or Nolan; they won't do it!
JJ; hes out as well!

Neil Blomkamp is the one man to go!
Or David Fincher; if he's ready for a Disney- PG STAR WARS!
Duncan Jones; Rian Jonsen etc!
All too bold for Disney's liking but these are the guys who, if made, will make an amazing Star Wars!

Did someone seriously say Uwe "Video Game Movies That Totally Suck" Boll and Michael "Blow As Much S*** Up As Possible With No Regard To The Plot" Bay

I'm sorry, but you must be joking, I guess if we can't come up with a concrete choice for the director of SW:EPVII, then let's make a list of who shouldn't direct.

List of Directors NOT for SW (or any other movie)

1. Uwe Boll
2. Michael Bay
3. Brett Ratner
4. Joel Schumacher
5. Seth MacFarlane
6. Brian Levant
7. Steve Carr
8. Adam Shankman
9. Brian Robbins
10.Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer

*George Lucas, but that's a given

Big directors are turning down the offer to direct Episode 7.

First it was Spielberg, now it's J.J. Abrams. I'm actually not surprised J.J. Abrams turned it down considering he has his hands full with the Star Trek franchise.

I'm hoping Matthew Vaughan gets the gig.

@theomegasanction I think Bryan Singer did a wonderful job with X-Men and I can't wait to see Days of Future Past, granted he ruined Superman Returns but that gave rise to Man of Steel. He's a great director, especially given how young he is and the talent he works with.

Are there ANY directors left in Hollywood that HAVEN'T already turned this down? Are there NONE with the testicular fortitude? I swear to god if they give this shit to Ratner....

I think Disney might give the job to favreau. He has made it clear that he is interested and willing to do it. He's not my first choice but did pretty solid work on iron man. Though I think Ridley Scott would do an amazing job. Anyone who has seen Prometheus knows the flaws with the film were in the script. Ridley is a veteran director and unlike many directors today knows how to tell a story even with lots of cgi and visuals. Other guys who I think would also be good are neil blomkamp and rian johnson. Both district 9 and looper were very grounded films with great storytelling while maintaining the sci fi genre.
