Robert Downey Jr. Hints At A Possible Return As Tony Stark After IRON MAN 3

Robert Downey Jr.'s commitment to Marvel Studios ends with this May's Iron Man 3, so does that mean we've seen the last of his take on Tony Stark? Kevin Feige won't spill the beans, but hit the jump to read the actors thoughts on whether he wants to carry on playing the Armored Avenger.

"Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it," Robert Downey Jr. cryptically told Empire Magazine in their latest issue when asked whether or not he wants to return to the role of Tony Stark after this May's Iron Man 3. "There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I'm not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I'm not to picky about that either."

It certainly doesn't sound as if the actor has made a final decision about making a return, but it seems fair to say that Marvel Studios WILL want him back, even if it costs them considerably more than it did when they hired him for Iron Man back in 2008! Unsurprisingly, Kevin Feige wasn't willing to give anything away, but he was quick to assure fans that Tony Stark himself is going nowhere. "Tony's going to carry on. Avengers 2 already has a release date!"

As for how Robert Downey Jr. feels about the possibility of being replaced and another actor taking over the legacy of Iron Man (similar to the James Bond franchise), it's not something he seems to be all that concerned about. "It would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego...but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let's see what happens. I take the audience very seriously - I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, 'Don't do that anymore.' I don't have to overstay my welcome..." Do you want to see the actor back as the Armored Avenger? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

depends. if IM3 has a fresh story to tell and Shane Black has another one in him for Iron Man 4. then of course, their'd be no reason to re-cast him. don't want him in Avengers 3 though. i'd prefer to see some new blood on the team by then.

@darkdroid499 I used to have the same feeling but truthfully from any type of standpoint it would be wayyy too early to kill off Tony in A2.

the role will be eventually recast, I think colin farell could make a fine replacement but for d next few years RDJ is Iron Man.

don't recast. i rather see him go out in a blaze of glory instead of recast. i mean it's not like he played tony in one movie and then didn't work out. he played him in now 4 movies. it just wouldn't be the same.

tony, dies a [frick]ing awesome death in avengers 2, maria is killed by a falling shrapnel... in the opening credits, black widow/hawkeye retire. beforehand disney's overlord mickey blackmails fox & sony to release marvel rights. all 4 dead characters are replaced by the new avengers initiative: BLACK PANTHER, wolverine, spider-man, wasp, giant man.

dang, this fanboy can only dream. cocaine is a helluva drug.

Said it before, I'll say it again. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man is clearly Marvel's cash grab, and Avengers probably wouldn't have been as successful if it wasn't for him. RDJ is obviously enjoying playing the character, he has a good relationship with Marvel, and Iron Man is at the peak of his popularity right now. It'd be ridiculous to have him quit after Iron Man 3. I hope he'll at least stick around until Avengers 3.

I would not mind at all seeing RDJ do a few more rounds as Iron Man. I think he played the roll extremely well. I could see a few more stories with him it.

He's sticking around, so suck it, haters!

IronHood
IronHood - 2/25/2013, 8:59 AM
I don't see him returning after IM3. Depends on how well IM3 actually does that will decide if & how long he'll be back as Stark. If he comes back for 2 more Avengers movies, he may just do more IM movies. However, there are many factors. If he likes the role & wants to keep doing it, the company, the timing, contracts etc.

I love him as Stark but I don't care, maybe it might be good to see another fill Stark's shoes. Pretty big shoes to fill but like Batman, Superman or James Bond. It's been done before.

What haters? I think this is the one topic that everyone on this site can agree with. RDJ is the man as Stark and no one wants to see him go.

JMESS

I hope he stays, as far as casting wise this is by far the best theyve done in all the movies, marvel or dc, he really is the perfect fit.
TheLokey1
TheLokey1 - 2/25/2013, 9:05 AM
He won't be recast until after avengers 3 (most likely some kind of riff on civil war). Im pretty sure marvel has everything mapped out until that point and then all bets are off.

personally, Id preffer Robert to keep playing Tony on Avengers sequels and Marvel doing new solo heroe movies in the next years.

Black Panther HAS to have his own movie. Dont care too much about other unseen characters on the universe, but BP is the one Im really interested, after Antman

MrDonut - 2/25/2013, 9:28 AM
I think that he has it in him to do 2 more Avengers movies before anyone even thinks about him retiring the role, either way, I personally see all superhero roles like James Bond; an actor does their bit until new meat comes in- Downey though will undoubtedly be the Sean Connery of Iron Man
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 2/25/2013, 9:32 AM
All they need to do is take the focus off Iron man in future Avengers films. They can just have RDJ do the voice in the iron suit and never show his face. Im sure he would be willing to do that. they can just have Iron man show up for the battles and thats it. Him and Cap shouldnt be getting along anyway so he will not want to be around.
faver
faver - 2/25/2013, 9:33 AM
Marvel isn't famous for spending a lot of money on their actors if they can help it. He'll probably be back for Avengers sequels, but I don't think we'll be seeing more Iron Man solo films unless Marvel decides to pay him a lot or they come up with a great script that moves him to lower his financial expectations. Or his career declines, but that isn't very likely.
Of all the Avengers actors, he's the one that they really can't afford to recast. It'd be a huge blow to the franchise. Not critical, but significant (at least for now, until we have more solo films of the other Avengers). A good replacement could work given time though.

silverdog - 2/25/2013, 9:38 AM
good. keep downey as stark and jackman as wolverine as much as possible, they are some of the few actors that are grateful for what CMBs do for their careers.
ATrueHero1987
ATrueHero1987 - 2/25/2013, 9:41 AM
Um, didn't he just get a $50 million payday for The Avengers? I don't think Marvel will have a hard time convincing him to come back.
80sFace
80sFace - 2/25/2013, 9:47 AM
RDJ said on a commentary "Where's my franchise?" He wanted one prior to getting Iron Man. Then he scored Iron Man.

He wants a fat $$. Sherlock Holmes is ok, but not the $50M he made on Avengers. He'll keep doing IM till he can't. He's 48 this year. 50 by the time Avengers 2 is out. 52 for IM4. 54 for Avengers 3. Last will be IM 5 at 56.
NoAssemblyReqd
NoAssemblyReqd - 2/25/2013, 9:48 AM
I predict Tony will disappear after AVENGERS 2, leaving Phase 3 Iron Man-free until his triumphant return in AVENGERS 3.
