This week's Entertainment Weekly promises to take us behind the scenes of the rather brilliant looking Oz: The Great and Powerful. In a brief excerpt from their feature on the movie, the site reveals what director Sam Raimi had to say about approaching the wonderful world of Oz. "The original is my favorite film of all time," he said. I didn’t want it sullied. I didn’t want to be involved in a production that might trade off the goodwill of that film, so I didn’t even want to read the script at first. Luckily I did. And then I realized that it wasn’t at all what I thought."

"Oz The Great and Powerful" imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

@Facade, if you read the book Wicked the witch is actually somewhat attractive, well as attractive as someone can be with green skin. While this movie is not really based on that book, I am guessing they took some parts from it.

Maybe it's just me, but Sam Raimi's had such a disappointing career arc. Imagine if 20 years ago someone told you the guy who made Evil Dead was directing a goofy origin story about the Wizard of Oz. Sure, his stuff's always been campy, but somewhere during Spider-Man 2 he popped an O-ring or something.

I find it ironic that Raimi finally made a proper Green Goblin, but didn't put it in a Spider-man film.

I think the movie looks like it'll be great. Very visual and old fashioned. Raini does a better job than Burton within managing the plots of this type of movie.

That really looks like Rachel in the picture. I have a feeling both Mila and Rachel will end up turning green. Movie looks great.

It would have looked better if they used an "aged filter" on the camera lens. It looks way too crystal clear and cgi'd to be a prequel.

@Battabing, the original Wicked Witch was actually supposed to be attractive, but the studio insisted on an ugly witch:

in regards to who is a wicked witch...if we go by what we know from the original film The Wizard of Oz...there were 3 witches and only one of them wasn't wicked, and that was Glinda the good witch of the North. The Wicked Witch of the East dies when Dorothy's house falls on her, so that leaves her sister, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda...but that's just my take on it

Timerider84 - 2/28/2013, 11:57 AM
Rachel W. Is playing the witch that Dorothy lands on, the wicked witch of the East, and of course, Michelle Williams is playing Glinda, from the North.
