Danny Boyle Isn't Interested In Helming BOND 24; Nearly Directed ALIEN 4

Despite being a fan favourite choice, the 127 Hours and Trance director says that he has little to no interest in tackling a big budget blockbuster like James Bond 24, but does reveal that he once came close to helming the fourth Alien movie.

Danny Boyle has been a fan favourite choice to helm a Bond movie for a long time now, especially after he directed a short sequence for last year's London Olympics which featured Daniel Craig's James Bond meeting the Queen. With Sam Mendes making the decision to not return for the next instalment in the franchise, does that mean Boyle will consider helming James Bond 24? "No," he told fans in an hour long 'Conversation with Danny Boyle' in New York. "I much prefer to have a ceiling. A ceiling that is limiting us and you try and break through. We want our films to look like $100 million dollars, that’s for sure. And we want them to sound like $200 million. But you try and do that with that cap on them. And that’s where the energy, belief and evangelical nature of the process comes from."

We probably shouldn't expect to see him take on any other sort of big budget blockbusters either. "I love watching those movies, I’m a big fan," he revealed. "Chris Nolan, Ridley Scott and they mustn't stop making them, but they are not really the ones for me." However, he did once come close to directing the fourth movie in the Alien franchise. "I got involved briefly, with ‘Alien 4.’ After ‘Trainspotting’ my head was turned. Partly because I loved the ‘Alien’ movies, but I realized very quickly that I couldn’t make one. You wouldn’t get the best out of me at all." The Playlist also points to another interview with Boyle which took place at SXSW in which he reiterated that a Bond movie just isn't for him. "It’s not for me, I’m afraid. They’re different kinds of films, you know? They’re huge. They’re just huge. They wouldn’t get the best out of me, doing that sort of thing. Would you guys like to see Boyle take on a comic book movie?

At least he's honest about what work he wants to do and isn't just sitting back waiting for the pay check.

good. no one wants him to direct a bond movie anyway.

Sam Mendes got the Skyfall job because he had a pre-existing relationship with Daniel Craig and, following that trajectory, the director of Bond 24 will be Mathew Vaughn, who has already expressed a desire to direct a Bond film.

And why wouldn't he be? He's much better as one of the few creative people in Hollywood brave enough to invent new ideas, not rehash the old tried and true for some quick cash. Not to say I didn't love Casino Royale.

Agree with godzillafart. Inception was a decent film, but I found it difficult to invest in any of the characters.

Nice to see he's more interested in the story telling than the pay cheque. Too many directors have their priorities the other way around - not necessarily a bad thing, I mean the money must be a huge draw, but nobody's ever honest about it. I'm not sure what a Danny Boyle directed Bond movie would look like anyway, the two seem a bit incompatible. I don't think a 5 minute short to introduce the Olympics is much of an indicator of how he'd really make the movie.

I think it's unlikely that Nolan would direct the next Bond movie, especially with his production role in Man of Steel (and any potential sequels), and Wally Pfister's movie, as well as prepping to direct Interstellar. He seems pretty busy for now. I just hope he eventually does make a Bond movie - he's expressed an interest a number of times in the past. There again, Alfred Hitchcock wanted to direct a Bond movie back in the day, and he never got around to it... I can see Nolan doing the same thing.

Matthew Vaughn would be a good choice. He has previous with Daniel Craig, hell he's the reason Craig got the Bond gig in the first place. He's included some Bond-like elements in movies like X-Men: First Class and perhaps Layer Cake.

Maybe Nolan might be a good choice for Daniel Craig's last Bond film? Or the introductory movie for the next Bond actor?

@imnotwearinghockeypants there are no new ideas. The challenge, and the thing Danny Boyle does well, as do all the best directors, is taking old ideas and putting a new spin on them.

I reckon the next Bond director will be someone no one's even thought of yet.

His stance is understandable, and I truly appreciate that. I'm still extremely excited for his upcoming Trance, while for Bond, my current pick is Paul McGuigan (Sherlock).

After Hanna, I'd love to see Joe Wright taking on the franchise, too, but that seems a lot more unlikely than anything else.

I surely won't mind Nolan as the director. I love Inception with all my heart (and I'm a fan of the man thanks to that film), in which there are a lot of examples of how he'll do Bond justice, but there's just something that keeps me off from putting him as my personal candidate. Maybe it's because he most likely won't do it (remember, he's got Interstellar to work on, and I personally am far more excited about it than the idea of him tackling any other project), or something else that I need to sort out first. If he ends up being officially signed on, I'll surely be extremely pleased, but at this point he's just not my personal consideration for the job.

@Jolt Paul McGuian might be a good choice! Also, I think he's left Sherlock, so he may be available for Bond.

And yeah, Trance looks brilliant.

@ACira, your argument for no new ideas defeats itself. A new spin on an old idea is a new idea.

ACira: Yep, he's (unfortunately) left the show for some of his "North American projects," among them are Frankenstein with Daniel Radcliffe, and a biopic that I don't exactly remember about. Well, it does seem to be quite a stretch, but here's to hoping it will open his way back to the big screen - and a Bond movie - one day!

McGuigan could be cool choice as next director. Other who come in mind are Matthew Vaughn, Joe Wright, Rupert Wyatt, Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Hooper. I would even consider Martin Campbell again. He did good job with Goldeneye and Casino Royale so why not have him again.

However someone needs to finally make new Simon Templar and Modesty Blaise movies. I´ve been waiting them for years.

Funny that Boyle said that, 'cause Sunshine has the right kind of aura for an Alien movie. I liked it.

I wish they could get him on board to direct a smaller budget CBM. I have no idea which character he's suited for though.

I don't think NOlan wanting to have control over the story (and likely having his brother co-write it with him) would be an issue with the Brocollis honestly. Mendes had quite a bit of pull in the story department, as did Campbell. I think they'd be willing to trust Nolan to go somewhere with the character.

That said, I'm torn on a Nolan made Bond movie. The action won't be impressive but the various character moments will be good. I'd like to see him co-direct a Bond flick. Let him handle all of the story elements but have someone else do the action.
