As you should already know, J.J. Abrams' next task after completing Star Trek Into Darkness is to reintroduce Star Wars to an audience who desperately want and need to forget the prequels released last decade. Talking to Empire Magazine, writer Roberto Orci has shared his thoughts on how he felt when he learned that the director had a new sci-fi franchise to focus on and how he believes this will all impact the release of the next instalment in the Star Trek franchise.


"First I was happy for J.J., but I definitely felt a disturbance in the Force - which, incidentally, was first felt by Spock on the original series of Star Trek: when 400 Vulcans died he felt it across space, just like Ben Kenobi, but a decade ahead...

"Anyway, we're all fans of Star Wars. Still, this is going to affect calendars and now it's two massive corporations having to vie for the right attention to each of these properties. But hopefully it will be fine.

"I don't know how much Paramount and other studios have to cooperate with each other. But I think everyone will explore every possibility fairly. And even if he goes completely Star Wars, we know now - he can't ever deny it - he is a big Star Trek fan!"

never cared about either series. but i saw Star Trek on a whim and loved it so who knows maybe he can make me care for both series.

I think JJ is gonna stick to Star Wars. He loves Star Wars, and no matter how he does Star Wars, as long as there two times better than the prequels, then the fans will accept JJ.

JJ changed a lot of things with Star Trek. He made a great movie, and brought in some new Trekkies, but a lot of the old school fans are butthurt, because it's not the dialogue driven Star Trek with a more than difficult plot.

star wars is honestly one of the best movies ever made, not because of the movie itself but because of what it has given us as fans. a lot of careers have been created and paths chosen because of star wars. its incredibly important that it happened, and i know that sounds ridiculous but it really is the catalyst for a lot of whats happening around us today. star wars is the ultimate geek/art/people film. star wars is truth man, star wars, is hope, and imagination and love. star wars is a gift.

Those old school fans are "butthurt" because a Star Trek story that is not dialoge driven is like a Star Wars story without Lightsabres.

At least that has been Star Trek since the Next Generation came out in 87.

The original series while talky was much more wild and wooly then Star Trek became in the 80's and 90's.

Abrams was able to return Trek back to the spirit of the original series when there didn't have to be a hard science possible explanation for everything.

We shall see how much "butthurt" comes from the Star Wars camp when JJ takes
the mandate to try to get as far away from the prequels as possible too far.

Btw,the prequels were very successful money wise so that ment a lot of regular people were just fine with Lucas' work.

In fact for most people under 20,the prequels were their introduction to Star Wars.

Since the next movie is Episode 7 and not a reboot like Star Trek,its kind of hard to make people forgot there was an Episode 1,2 and 3.

There's nothing Abrams or Disney can do to bring Star Wars back to its pre-prequel status.

Lucas killed it. And he meticulously destroyed every character and element that made it great.

I want Abrams to complete his STAR TREK trilogy; maybe even find a way to mend the timeline back to bookend his trilogy, and pave the way for a Trek film with TNG or DS9 crew. Riker's ship TITAN maybe? :)

What @blkyank said. I agree with him... Brad Bird is an extremely likely chose to direct Star Trek 2016. He likes 70mm IMAX too. And maybe he can deliver that "cerebral" Trek film some fans keep whining over.

Plus... I think if Brad Bird takes over while keeping the same writing and production team, I think the chances of a lack-luster third film decreases. That's if we're going off how he brought new life into Mission: Impossible.

Fixing the Trek timeline is easy.. Spock already knows the calculations for a time-jump (from Star Trek 4) He could very easily jump back in time and wait for Nero then blow him up. Thus restoring the timeline.

My big wish for Trek is for it to return to TV and pick up 100 years after Next Generation.. What we all like about Trek is it's a semi-realistic look into our future. NextGen went further into the future. I say keep going. SHow the adventures of the Enterprise M with a vulcan captain..

@blkyank star trek wasnt "rebooted" per se, the 2009 movie creates an alternate timeline, without disregarding the old one, hence the old spock appearing

@blkyank After watching a lot of the original series, I think it makes sense for JJ not to try and mimic the way they did it.

If JJ made a dialogue driven movie about the enterprise encountering a buffalo that can morph into anyone your mind pictures, then it wouldn't be a very good movie.Because the story for each episode of the original series worked for TV.

Star Trek wasn't relevant anymore before JJ stepped in. He made a movie that was fun, with excellent character development, with a simple but good plot.

I guess I can't act like Star Wars fans have never been butthurt before. The rants about the special editions prove that Star Wars fans can be butthurt.

And you make a good point. Because I think after the prequels, Disney is going to try to go as old school as possible and sort of stray away from the prequels, so a lot of fans may be happy, but a lot of fans will be angry as well.

JJ did a wonderful job of the "First" Star Trek, and he proved a skeptic (Me) wrong. But let's face it, Star Trek was the rebound "girl" for Abrahms, Star Wars is really the "girl" he wants to be with...his first true love.

I think there could be alot of let down Star Wars fans when Episode 7 hits.

When JJ got the job, a lot of old school fans seemed to get it in their heads that the
plot would basically follow the expanded universe books.

I don't see this as the case.

In an attempt to get as far away from the prequels as possible.I see Abrams making a lot of changes to reflect that likely 25 to 30 years have passed since Return of the Jedi, based on the ages of returning original series actors.

What will fans think if we see new space craft replace the iconic Star Destroyers,T.I.E. fighters and X-Wings?

What will people say if Luke didn't set up a Jedi academy on Yavin 4 or serve as a mentor to the Solo Jedi children?

We have no idea where things could go.Just don't be surprised if 2 years from now,a number of people on this site don't post articles about JJ raping their childhood or how they wished Lucas was back.

Disney may be making a mistake in getting too caught up thinking that the loudest voices happen to reflect the most fans.

Many of the loudest voices are old school fans who hated the prequels.

Fair enough since I'm 45 myself,saw all the originals in a theater, and thought 2 out of three prequels didn't hold a candle to the originals, but did like Sith.

The problem could be that an entire generation of Star Wars fans (my sons included)
were raised on the prequels themselves and other sources inspired by them like Clone Wars,and no matter how much their elders told them it wasn't real Star Wars, they didn't care because it was THEIR Star Wars and opened the door to this universe for them.

Don't be shocked if a backlash comes from these teens and young adults in 2015 because Abrams and Disney are more worried about the opinions of 50 something year olds over 15 to 25 year olds who grew up on a version of Star Wars everybody else(including JJ and Disney) says is crap. That is the prime audience Star Wars has to not forsake in order to move forward.

There will be the adults taking their children to see the later films in the trilogy
and spin offs the same way my generation took our kids to see the prequels.

I think a cameo of Ewen as Obi Won's ghost speaking to Luke, would be a proper
way to honor the legacy of that era of Star Wars and allow those who grew up on it to recall to their own children the joy they felt attending their first Star Wars films
the same way their parents once told them.

Launching franchises before passing them off to trusted colleagues is what Abrams does best. TREK will be fine without him at the helm.
