UPDATE: IRON MAN 3 Takes An Estimated $15 - $18 Million At Midnight Showings

It's still early days, but we've just learned that Iron Man 3 took an estimated $15 - $18 million at midnight screenings in North America (where it has FINALLY been released after hitting most international territories). Read on for details!

Iron Man 3 continues to take the box office by storm, this time raking in an estimated $15 - $18 million when it finally made its North American debut last night. While we're still waiting on the confirmed figures, this would mean that the threequel isn't too far behind Marvel's The Avengers. That opened last year with $18.7 million, making it the highest superhero midnight opening of all-time. However, that was for midnights ONLY, so it's obvious that Iron Man 3 won't be able to break that record. Regardless, this is still an amazing start for the film and undoubtedly only another step in its journey to ultimately hitting the $1 billion mark. Have any of you guys seen it yet?

UPDATE: We now have the confirmed numbers. As you can see, it's closer to $15 million than $18 million, but this is still a solid start for Iron Man 3's North American box office run. As of right now, it also has a current worldwide cume of $361 million and it's widely thought that the movie will earn between $165 - $180 million in America by Sunday.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

STARRING:

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert
James Badge Dale as Eric Savin
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan

RELEASE DATE: May 3rd, 2013 (US).

I hope it doesn't make a billion dollars. It doesn't deserve it. The first Iron Man deserved it.

Yea, I'm a huge comic book fan. I've been reading since I was a kid. I read pretty much everything from the mid 90s to the present plus all major story arcs. I recently have been reading the list at cmro.travis-starnes.com which lists all marvel in publication order while keeping story arcs intact. I'm nearly 600 issues in (circa 1968) and having read so much of Marvel I have to say I loved this film. I didn't mind the twist. It was funny. I don't mind if they change from the source material because this is the movie universe not the comic universe. The action was great. The ending battle with the iron army was fantastic. My new favorite iron man film.

While I thought the film was just okay, I can say with some certainty that this will be the monster blockbuster of the summer.

Billion dollar club here we come!

really enjoy the movie the best third film out of all comic book movie trilogies, yup better than spider-man 3,blade 3,x-men 3,superman 3 & of course the dark knight rises .

yeah i was pissed at the mandarin twist but i can't change what has happened,so i've got over that now it was about two weeks ago when i first heard about the twist & it really was a funny scene.

Not a DC troll and I still have to admit this movie sucked. RDJ went way overboard with the Jokes, the twist? [frick] you Shane black, story and acting was a little hollow. Ill just stick to watching IM1 over and over.

Not only is it the weakest of the trilogy, but the weakest MARVEL studios film. The unchecked raping of the Manadarin is beyond ridiculous and insulting.

There's one thing MARVEL did when they took control of their unsold properties, and that's represent their characters in a way companies like FOX couldn't. Now they let Black take a fat shit on not just Mandarin, but Iron Man 3 is silly all over the place. Doesn't even fit in it's own trilogy.
