First Look At Breathtaking AVATAR LAND Coming To Disney's Animal Kingdom

Regardless of whether you loved or hated James Cameron's groundbreaking 3D movie Avatar back in 2009, it's hard to imagine anyone not being impressed by this stunning concept art from the planned Avatar World which will be coming to Walt Disney World around 2017.

By 2017, it will have been eight years since the release of Avatar, so you may think that opening a theme park based on the world of Pandora is a little pointless. Well, with at least three more movies in the franchise said to be in development, it's fair to say that audiences of all-ages will still be familiar with that planet by the time it's made part of Disney's Animal Kingdom. Thanks to Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, we have the first concept art and a lengthy statement in which he shares details on the plans for Avatar Land. Check them out below!

"From the moment AVATAR was released, people were captivated by the mythical world of Pandora. When we announced that we’d be working with James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment to bring this world to life in our parks, we felt certain that this partnership and combination of talent and imagination would produce an experience unlike any other ever created.

Our combined team has taken huge steps forward in “imagineering” Pandora as a real place for our guests to see, hear and touch. At the first-ever D23 Expo in Japan, we shared an early glimpse of the plans for AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park and I wanted to share some of these breathtaking images and a short preview of what’s to come with all of you.

As these concept renderings show in epic scale, in the world of AVATAR guests will encounter awe-inspiring floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound. Guests will also discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee.

And the new AVATAR-inspired land won’t be the only change coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

As part of the largest expansion in the history of the park, we’ll be adding all-new entertainment experiences, including a new nighttime spectacular where live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery all combine to bring a show to Discovery River that will delight our guests and truly cap off their day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The park will introduce more nighttime entertainment as well, including live performers on Discovery Island (pictured above) and a new nighttime version of the Kilimanjaro Safaris.

As the world of AVATAR becomes real at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the energy and passion shared by our Imagineers and the Lightstorm team for this monumental task continues to be remarkable. I can’t wait to see the reactions of our guests as they step into a world that until now has only existed on the screen."

I'm wondering how the hell they're going to pull this type of land and architecture off. Regardless, it does looks breathtaking.

Just about every preview I've read for this land since it was announced has been some variation of "You may have thought the movie sucked, but you gotta admit Pandora is a beautiful place."

THE AVENGERS hadn't come out and Disney hadn't purchased Lucasfilm yet when this attraction was first revealed. All these years later it's like "Oh yeah, Disney has that thing too."

The "floating mountain" in the first pic....i see how it's fixed with supports etc....but if this is built outside, how will it stand in bad weather?

My first thought when comparing the size with the model people underneath. In reality the structure will weigh tons.....

There must be a engineer/architect, part time CBM fan, on this site!?

Help me out!

I didn't hate AVATAR, but storywise it is to Cameron's other work as Lucas's WILLOW was to STAR WARS.

I will say this. When the press release came out when I was working at Disney's Hollywood Studios, my fellow Cast Members and I were not big fans. After seeing this art, I've changed my mind. I really hope they can achieve the level they have now that the Imagineers have taken the concept to Blue Sky level.

Cool place but will fail in comparison to a marvel or star wars park!!! Why Disney Why! Atleast the Tower of Terror line will be a little shorter now!

@DioFoRio A cool idea, but impossible since Universal has all Marvel theme park rights east of the Mississippi, basically forever, or unless Disney/Marvel deems their upkeep of their current attractions as "unsatisfactory."

I feel like that's only a matter of time before Disney brings the hammer down on Universal to get that section out of their park. However, I did hear that Disney is going to work with Warner Bros to bring the Lord of the Rings franchise to the Disney Hollywood Studios park.

Avatar was a terrible movie. Does anyone still care about it?

I'd secretly hoped that Disney would work out a barter with Universal -- AVATAR land for MARVEL -- but a LOTR for MARVEL trade would work just fine too (that's if those LOTR rumors are true).

I hope they eventually make a huge section based around the Star Wars franchise. I mean, a roller coaster based on attacking the death star? Would be great!

The irony of AVATAR is that it probably would have been better received as an original theme park experience than it was as a 3 hour film. Its story is simple and can be told in little vignettes, just like most Disney attractions.

@Lazarusreborn , Star Tours.

But yeah, there are many, Many, things that could be made at disney other than avatar. This is just disneys way of competing with Harry Potter land at universal,. picking of course something as unreasonably popular as justin beiber, and undoubtably bringing in large sums of cash and publicity

What the Hell ? how are they going to do this!! Disneys great!!!

@GodofMischief

My understanding is that Universal doesn't have to pay to renew anything. Unlike the Marvel movie rights deals, where studios have to make a new movie every few years or lose the rights, Universal is not required to make do anything new with their Marvel Superhero Island except keep it maintained and pretty (to protect the brand).

So, unless *Disney* pays up, or Uni gets tired of making money on rides based on characters their competition is paying to promote (yeah, right), Marvel is not leaving Islands of Adventure anytime soon.
