J.J. Abrams And Lawrence Kasdan Take Over STAR WARS EPISODE VII Script From Michael Arndt

Disney and Lucasfilm clearly aren't overly impressed by Michael Arndt's (Toy Story 3) work on the Star Wars Episode VII screenplay, as it has today been announced that director J.J. Abrams and The Empire Strikes Back co-writer Lawrence Kasdan will be taking over writing duties.

As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release.

Good News. Good News indeed. If I had my way Kasdan would write the entire sequel trilogy

Well looks like we all may have dodged the crappy Star Wars movie bullet!! Empire was by far the best Star Wars and having Kasdan back is more than huge!!

Yikes. Remember that joke video Arndt put out showing him struggling with the script?

Is it possible they are just doing rewrites and edits? The press release to me seems more like it is announcing the next step in the process rather than tanking the writer. They do make it clear that Arndt isn't going to be involved in the process going further, but does that necessarily imply they aren't happy with what he's done?

Damn, I had high hopes for Arndt, shame he couldn't get the job done.

Getting rid of the most talented writer of the three? Smart...

This sounds more like: he's turned in his final draft of the script, and the guy who's shooting the movie is going to finalize it with a seasoned Star Wars screenplay veteran. No more, no less. I'm sure Arndt did a fine job.

TS3 was a great film. It's my favorite Pixar movie not named Up.

Kind of disappointing to hear. But seeing how much Abrams loves Star Wars, and knowing that the same guy who wrote the greatest Star Wars movie is also writing the script, I'm happy.

@humby That's kind of what I'm starting to think after reading this. They're probably just re-doing a couple of things within in the script.

Remember, Arndt was hired before Abrams. Abrams probably has script approval in his contract. Kennedy acquiesced to that so long as it's co-written with Kasdan (someone who they trust and is proven with Star Wars material).

Like a couple of other guys have stated above: Ardnt probably wrote 90-100% of the script, now "Larry" and J.J are taking it from there. "Do we need this", "how about we do it like this instead".

I'm sure Arndt has done an excellent job, remember, Disney said they had a couple of writes pitching them what the sequal story should be like...

from the first day Arndt was announced I said kasden needs to write from the beginning, so said, so done... nothing against Arndt but he is not the right fit...

@JorEllinator After the prequels, how can it be worse? Seriously. The thing that makes me optimistic is that Lucas isn't writing it. After Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars, Lucas lost his touch. And even in his prime he wasn't very good at writing dialogue, and during the prequels it got worse, to a laughable degree.

At this point, Star Wars can only go up.

ndwwrestler2 - 10/24/2013, 2:29 PM
@xxon That is what makes me think it probably re-writes in a couple places, but they aren't dropping the ENTIRE script. At least that's what I'm thinking.

This is bad news.

Why in the holy mother of [frick] are people insulting Toy Story 3?! Insult little miss sunshine while you're at it.

In toy story 3, ardnt managed to fantastically blend the themes and consequences of the first two toy stories into the story. He delivered an incredible finale and perhaps the greatest third film of a trilogy non adaptation ever made.

Show some respect. To me it sounds lucasfilm didn't have the balls to go through with his ideas

The cast and everything else about Toy Story is way closer to Star Wars than the stuff Kasdan has done in this century.

AbedIsBatman - 10/24/2013, 3:46 PM
This isn't unusual. Scripts get passed down to multiple writers all the time in the development process. That doesn't mean they're scrapping Arndt's draft. Now that it's been handed off to JJ, more likely it's just being polished without any major changes.
