Disney CEO Bob Iger Explains The Decision Behind STAR WARS EPISODE VII's Release Date

Some fans were shocked when Disney chose a December 18th, 2015 release for Star Wars Episode VII as it goes against Lucasfilm's usual May date. In the following interview, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger shares his thoughts on the decision to male the change and why it may ultimately be a good thing!

"Well, this is obviously one of the most important films that we are working on right now. And one of the things that was very important to us is that we give the creative team, J.J. Abrams and his writing team, the time to design, write and produce the film so we can optimize quality, so they can create a great film. Very, very important.

And at one point we considered the summer of 2015, but it felt like, particularly with some changes we made in the writing team, that that was going to create a bit of a rush and didn't think that was optimal for obvious reasons. So Christmas 2015 became the date.

Happens to be the date which Avatar, which is the No. 1 movie of all time, was released, so we like that. Hopefully that brings good luck, even though that wasn't our film. And Christmas is a good time we think for a film like Star Wars, which will have obvious interest for young people and old people alike. From everyone."

@blackandyellow

Way to be dismissive. Too bad it ain't working. Empire was Shakespeare in space for kids so it's more than 'decent'. It was an astroid that hit Earth and we're stilling feeling the effects.

Also, A New Hope..or Star Wars was just damn groundbreaking and amazingly epic despite being the most low-key.

I still prefer a summer release. They should've pushed it back to Summer 2016. Oh well...

Having Warcraft and Episode 7 be released on the same day will be a bloodbath. They need, NEED to push Warcraft or Star Wars to another date.

Disney missed a HUGE marketing date: May 4th 2016 would have been smarter.

I highly doubt no one from the general audience would see it. That's like saying everyone who has never played Assassins Creed won't go to see the movie when it comes out. The trailers, TV spots, and posters make it look good, they give the general audience who knows nothing some eye candy and a little bit of a story to expect.

Warcraft 1-2 were very popular RTS before starcraft and were the games of the year for a few years straight. Millions of people played it. Millions of people still play Starcraft Broodwar and SC2. Millions play WOW and Warcraft 3. Millions of people is quite a demographic and most probably includes the general audience. College Professors, Doctors, Lawyers, Civil Engineers, Students, Actors, Writers, Plumbers, all types of people play WoW. it is a very large demographic that include the General audience

A New Hope was the greatest Star Wars film, it had that sense of wonder and felt like a cinematic experience.

Star wars is at minimum going to be #1 for 4 weeks straight and the Warcraft movie will fluctuate from #2-3

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks Warcraft will pose any kind of threat to Star Wars is on drugs. I would bet money they end up moving it. I don't see it doing just real great anyway, because most video game movies don't do well.

i can answer this without the CEO needing to! its for all the kids on XMAS Vaca! its that time of year they can rake in some cash without having to directly compete with the summer blockbusters

Honestly... The release date is a smart move IMO.
Including the reasons behind it. It sounded honest and real. LOTRs is on the same tip...

I would've done the same.

Why battle it out in the summer when you can have the Christmas weekend all to yourself?... (essentially)

The only reason is money. It's released around Christmas so all the toys and merchandise come out for the holidays and people buy all kinds of stuff and stuff disneys wallet. Plain and simple.

Feels weird having a Christmas release date, considering all the other movies opened in May.
WarnerBrother

Warcraft is gonna move.

The question is were to? I could see it being moved back a week to Christmas Day to siphon off the crowds that don't want to wait in line for Star Wars going into its second weekend the same way WB's Sherlock Holmes did against Avatar in 2009.

Sometimes being number 2 at the box office ain't bad if you likely will play well in January since no huge tent poles are being releaesed that month.

This does set up a Star Wars/Avatar clash in the holiday seasons every bit as big as the summer Marvel/DC clashes of late.

With Avatar kicking off in December 2016,2017 and 2018, the odds are that series will play against a main Star Wars trilogy film or one of the planned spin offs some time in that period.

I've been saying this for a while. Summers are getting too crowded. Disney is smart. They know that summer will be big with the Marvrl/DC battle with Avengers and BVS so why not go to a spot where they can likely own it.
Lhornbk
Lhornbk - 11/10/2013, 5:22 AM
@batmor, unless it's been moved, the Bond film comes out the first weekend in November. That's why Marvel moved Ant-Man from November to summer (although I still believe the odds are that Ant-Man will flop.)

As for those saying that Marvel now owns May, I'm calling BS. Yeah, they have in recent years, but I would bet money that if Star Wars had already claimed a May date, Marvel would have stayed at least a month away from it, and not just because Disney owns both companies. And yes, I have no doubt that kids wanting Star Wars toys for Christmas factored into the decision. Disney would be stupid to not take that into a consideration.

As for a possible Star Wars/Avatar showdown, just because Ep. VII is being released in December doesn't mean the others will, especially the stand-alones. And if there is a showdown, unless Ep. VII just sucks, Star Wars will wipe the floor with it. Avatar was that successful in large part because it was the first truly spectacular 3-D movie, and so many, including myself, just wanted to see it for the visuals. The story itself was, at best, boilerplate politically correct nonsense about the poor natives beating the oppressive imperialists. When the next ones come out, while they will probably still have impressive visual effects, the newness of it will be gone. People won't go just for that again. And the story is sounding even dumber, with the mean colonel somehow being brought back to life evidently (or maybe he has a twin brother too, like Jake did.) Avatar doesn't have near the child following (how many of you know a kid who has ever bought an Avatar toy?) either. Heck, even with only a cartoon out the past several years, Star Wars toys are still prominent at Walmart. And Avatar doesn't have the cult following either. Just compare the number of Star Wars costumes at various conventions with the number of Avatar costumes. No, the only chance Avatar would have against Star Wars would be if Abrams just completely screws Ep. VII up and makes it where no one wants to see the next one.

@Danbojohnj, I'm the same. When I'm talking about it, I call it Star Wars too. I might clarify by saying the "first one" or "original" but I rarely if ever call it "A New Hope."

If this can create a promotional tie-in of releasing the Star Wars Christmas Special off the ground then I'm all in. Let's liven it up a little even and include a Riff Trax.
