THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: Jamie Foxx On Electro's Costume, Fan Criticism And More

Talking about the different versions which were considered for Electro's appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the reaction to his casting which he saw on various "blogs" (has he visited CBM?), Jamie Foxx also discusses making sure that his take on the villain isn't comedic and more!

"It used to be people would wait until they saw the film to decide their opinion," Jamie Foxx told Empire Magazine when they asked him for his thoughts on any negative backlash he may have seen in regards to the fact he was cast as Max Dillon/Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. "Now it's, 'Ben Affleck is Batman?! How [frick]ing dare you!' What's that all about? These blogs don't like anything. Christian Bale. Heath Ledger. They weren't happy - until they saw them. So you have to not give too much to it." As for his costume in the Marc Webb helmed sequel, Foxx revealed that they considered a number of looks - including a Dr. Manhattan type of appearance - before settling on the one we've seen in stills and trailers. "We tried a few different versions of the look. There were some that involved a lot more blue, but this one just looked the best. And it cut the make-up down from four hours to about one-and-a-half, which is good for me. I like this suit. The suit works. It's badass. I could wear this to the clubs." Finally, when it comes to his portrayal of Electro, he added: "I didn't want Electro to be funny at all. There were lines I thought he shouldn't say...this is a man who's angry. He's mad at the gods. He's just using Spider-Man and these people as an excuse to act out and be evil. The voice is from me watching Clint Eastwood and Alec Baldwin. The great whisperers."

Well, seeing the costume is enough to judge the costume. I didn't judge the film yet.

I still remember the first day the casting announcement was made in regards to his character. Glad to see that there's more people excited to see his performance. I'm just interested in seeing the chemistry Spider-Man and him develop as the film goes on.

I cannot help but wonder how Electro would look if they went with the classic costume.

^^^^THIS^^^^

Totally agreed, the only villain who I felt comfortable with in regards to their humor and jokes was The Mother[frick]er! lol

Malekieth (don't know if I spelled his name right) was cool as well but the thing that killed it for me was how much Loki outshines the character in the movie. He was a new villain but he didn't really bring anything new to the table if you ask me. The whole save the world plot gets a bit dull just like James Mangold stated from his work on The Wolverine. Sometimes these conflicts have to be more personal and grounded than predictable and dull.

Loved Zod's villainy because he actually had intentions for his evil doings. He actually wanted to save the race of Krypton. That chronicle director stated that not every villain needs to be sympathetic and Zod wasn't. Even though his intentions may have been it was his "will" to make this goal achievable that really kept me on the edge.

As for the Mandarin/Trevor it was very disappointing to me but when you think about Trevor NOT being the real Mandarin it doesn't hurt so much. The whole Killian/Mandarin thing was disappointing to me as well but to myself I thought..."Hey here's a guy who could actually be working for the real Mandarin but he builds himself up to be this badass so he decides to take it into precaution to call HIMSELF the Mandarin." And that's why I became cool with what they did in regards to that.

But yeah as someone mentioned above some villains are just evil you know? Not everyone needs the whole sympathetic vibe but I personally believe the sympathy makes us more connected to why these characters are the way they are.

I don't remember a lot of real criticism about the casting in my experience, just a bunch of racist bigots bitching about the race change. I never had a problem with it personally. I mean, we've got one of the most charismatic actors working today playing the main villain in a Spider-Man movie for crying out loud!

I'm sorry, but if you've seen any of foxx's movies, then you shouldn't have a doubt in your mind that he's gonna make electro his bitch. The look they gave electro in this movie is superb and as menacing as it gets. Yellow spandex....not so much.

Definitely one of my top cbms for the upcoming year.

Spider-Man 3 was a cool video game as well. That symbiote Spider-Man vs. Kingpin boss fight was dope. Don't forget the Kraven and Scorpion fight as well!

His words are very true. I would hate to be a filmmaker trying to satisfy the impossibly illogical minds of those who read comics and pay to see comic boo movies (Before you start stuff I read comics and go to see the comic book movies religiously). Seriously suspend logical comic book connections to the films and just enjoy that these characters are getting screen time. There have only been a handful of really terrible CBMS made anyway. Let us rejoice that these stories are being told. Not complain because your vision did not come to life. If you want that, there are 50,000 + film schools get off you butt and go direct the movie you want to be made.
