According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have now finalised their deals to return for the next three Avatar movies. They join Stephen Lang, who was confirmed to be making a return (despite being killed in the first instalment of the 3D franchise) last year. Director James Cameron will be making all three movies back to back, while Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno were all drafted in a little while back to help him with the screenplays. Plot details are currently scarce, although the trade does say that Jake Sully and Neytiri, the characters played by Worthington and Saldana, have kids in the sequel. Avatar 2 is set to be released in December, 2016, with the other two following in 2017 and 2018.

Sam Worthington has to be one of the most interchangeable, boring, charmless actors working today.

That's such a gamble if the sequel underperforms then they left with another 2 to put out, had hoped Cameron would move onto something else.

People have been predicting doom on Cameron's career since he took time off from action films after True Lies to focus on a passion project called Titanic.

Avatar was as much a rip off of Dances with Wolves as Star Wars was of The Hidden Fortress or World War II B-17 bomber footage,yet everybody here can't wait for more of that franchise.

Cameron has proven twice with Aliens and T2 that he can expand a universe to truly epic scale in a sequel so the man deserves the benefit of the doubt and not "Yet it die"

The first Avatar was a true breakthrough in terms of effects and imagery. It deserved to be a huge hit based on that alone. However, the story itself kinda sucked. It was just typical, PC save the environment, businessmen & corporations are evil liberal nonsense. I just cannot see the sequels coming close to equaling the first. The effects and 3D breakthrough has already happened, so you won't have people watching the movies just for that. And I don't think the characters have the same kind of following that Star Wars characters, or comic book heroes have. So unless they come up with a truly amazing, original story, or some new technical breakthrough, I don't see them being huge hits. And them bringing the colonel back shows me that they may have already jumped the shark. The first will probably have a huge opening weekend, but unless they have a better story, I don't see billions happening.

It'll be shit and still make more than the first one.

@GL

I don't think anybody is calling Avatar "Citizen Kane" or saying its the best written film to come along.Many people do on the other hand, recognize it for its technical execution.

Funny,if anybody has a beef with Marvel,the first thing its supporters throw up in its defense is, "The Avengers made 1.6 billion dollars at the box office."

When it comes to Avatar,which seems to have drawn the ire of the fanboy community,box office is pushed aside with the disclaimer that the film was still sh.t.

So box office means everything or it means nothing. Interesting.

It's visually spectacular, and adventuerous, but lacked story. Keep em coming, I say, fun movies.

Yes, Fergully 2, er, I mean Avatar 2 the we nuke the site from orbit and call it even. I guess ol Cameron does it for the challenge. Surely he doesn't need any more money. Still would have preferred a movie about the colonial marines-ones that aren't engaged in deforestation.
