Is X-Men: Days of Future Past in the right hands with Bryan Singer? While he's credited with kicking off the comic book movie craze, the director is also not so fondly remembered for paying a distinct lack of attention to the source material and the lacklustre Superman Returns. Matthew Vaughn meanwhile has delivered great movie after great movie, with X-Men: First Class hailed by some as the best X-Men movie yet. So, why didn't he return for the sequel? "It didn't excite me enough," he tells Empire Magazine. "The thing that was exciting about it was bringing all these actors together. What a cast! But I've worked with great actors and I just thought, 'I've got to do my own thing.'" That "own thing" would be the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' The Secret Service. "The script was great for X-Men, but I had Secret Service in my head. And this has always been Bryan's machine. It's come full circle."

Vaughn "has delivered great movie after great movie"? uhhh are we forgetting how terrible Stardust & Kick-Ass were? Layer Cake was good & the 1st & 3rd acts of First Class were fantastic, but that 2nd act was frumpy as hell. Yall need to stop puttin this dude on a damn pedestal

It's a shame since First Class was my favorite X-Men film. But if he didn't feel passionate enough about the franchise (we know he doesn't like to do sequels), then him stepping down was for the best. Singer, for better or worse, is really invested in the franchise and the characters.

Call him picky but Vaughn has come good on all of his movies he's directed, and probably because he was passionate about them. DOFP seems a bit too studio-driven for him (and I dont think he would have been the best fit for Star Wars either)

He's a talented director but he always runs away at last moment, not once but several times!

So SINGER is the guy who studio can hire & trust will atleast deliver a MOVIE, instead of saying I'm OUT, 1 month before shooting!
Part of the reason he lost STAR WARS cuz he not trustworthy!
JON FAVROE isn't a sophisticated director & Spielberg & Nolan doesn't need Star Wars!

I wouldn't mind seeing him return for a Sequel set after Apocalypse. The way I see it Vaughn isn't too interested on big baddies and plots outside of the action packed themes he continuously brings to films in Millar's universe and just as he did in First Class. I thin. DoFP would've been outside of his comfort zone. I could see him making a Weapon X, XForce or even another adaption of God loves Man Kills but DoFP and Apocalypse are too deep for his sci-fi genre the way I see it.

I really enjoyed First Class and Bryan is doing everything he can to have no continuity to First Class. What he is doing is not keeping people that were in the last film and bringing back people that no one cares about. But sadly I will most likely end up seeing it anyway. Just on BluRay instead of at the movies.

I bet he left DOFP to do Star Wars but Kath Kennedy wanted JJ (on the advice of Spielberg). So he played it nonchalant & went with Secret Service to save face ;)
