Marc Webb Says 'The Rhino' Will Only Be In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 For Four Minutes

For those of you worrying that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was going to do a Spider-Man 3 by throwing in way too many villains, director Marc Webb has now assured fans that there's a reason for all the characters to be there, revealing that The Rhino's role is in fact a small one.

"I'm going to embrace the spectacle," Marc Webb told fans at his South by Southwest keynote earlier today at the Austin Convention Center. "There was a moment deep in the [first film's] post-production process where a giant lizard smashed through a wall chasing a boy-man in a unitard and I said, 'This is not grounded. I'm not going to be beholden to smallness. I want it to be fantastic, to be big, to command and express that feeling when you're a kid and reading the comics. ... I didn't want to hide or shy away from that." With a total of three villains in the follow-up (Jamie Foxx's Electro, Dane DeHaan's Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino), no one could accuse The Amazing Spider-Man 2 of being grounded! However, Webb is well aware of the concerns over crowding the movie with too many bad guys. "We're obviously familiar with the complaints people had We're very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it's very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome." He would then add that The Rhino is, "in the movie for four minutes."

In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn
Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn
Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro
Sally Fields as Aunt May

I figured this all along. Just like classic Spidey stories where he stops the lower tiered bad guys really quick with some added humor.

God I can't wait for this. I feel Webb has learned a lot from The Amazing Spider-Man and it's going all out with this one. Something tells me this and Cap will be VERY special. And by special I mean two of the best superhero films ever in less than one month kind of special.

Expected. Rhino will be more prevalent in the wheel and Sinister Six film

If he literally means "four minutes" then we've seen all his screen time in trailers.

Captain America is doing the same thing with Batroc I think. I wish more CBMs would do that stuff. We don't need to establish an origin for every villain we see

The complaints will switch from "overcrowded" to "underdeveloped" now.

Thats what i thought it would be.. Pretty much I'm learning to not expect a whole lot more than what the trailer shows. Seemed like it was gonna be a quick fight.

We will be seeing plenty of Rhino in the 3rd movie and in sinister six movie

So him having 4 minutes of RHINO action in this movie is cool with me

WTF!!! That isn't enough time to establish Rhino as a villain! He's going to come across as underdeveloped to the general audiences. This is the anorexic version of Spiderman 3.

Kidding of course.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 3/8/2014, 12:29 PM
yeah, it's just for establishing he exists.
and come on, it's not like the Rhino is a complex character that needs a huge amount of screen time to develop.

ChiliConCarney - 3/8/2014, 12:30 PM
Good. Maybe in the next one he can be The Rhino instead of a guy in a robotic suit. Tired of these movies borrowing from the "Ultimate" universe. 616 or gtfo, movies...

I like this idea using villain for short time letting spider-man can chase take down bad guy it for the fun factor.

Webb, don't try to consolidate us with that crap. I mean you still f@cked up goblin, put Rhino in that god awful Iron Man suit, the first movie sucks and all of this is not even connected to the MCU. Psh, like I said before f@ck this film. I'm boycotting this sh!t until the rights go back to Marvel. This will never be the Spiderman that we all love and know until he is integrated into the MCU. The same goes for The Fantastic Four and The X-Men. Without these important elements we can never have a proper MCU. We will be stuck with what we have now, The ACU aka Avengers Cinematic Universe.

I think at end show him in 616 suit.

I hope.
GizmoEl

He's only gonna show up in a handful of scenes. Pre-Rhino. Becoming Rhino. And Rhino fight. It's a set up for the future

Too bad he's going to look ridiculously stupid in those four minutes...I mean why can't he actually look like Rhino and not some stupid mech/vehicle thing?
KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 3/8/2014, 12:40 PM
@ChiliConCarney

Honestly we probably would've gotten the robot suit anyways even if the Ultimate universe didn't existed. It's not like Rhino's a mutant or anything, it's literally a suit that enhances his abilities. It'd be less accurate to the comics to make him the way he is in the ASM game actually.

Not to mention we're not getting a timid nerd in the rhino suit, it's a Russian mobster. Aleksei might've not been a mob boss in the comics, but in the ultimate universe he was a small nerd. So be happy that's not happening.

Honestly Webb is borrowing from 616 and Spectacular Spider-Man if anything else. Sure there are "ultimate" elements here and there (the only major thing is Peter's dad's storyline), but for the most part this is the Spider-Man we love and know from the comics/Spectacular Spider-Man.

@MarkOfTheDemon

Cheers-ish. At least AoS will be integrating more non-Avengers characters. And we got Strange coming up. With all it's flaws, it's the best we've got in comparison to FUX and Sony.
Indy
Indy - 3/8/2014, 12:41 PM
Paul Giamatti so perfect for the rhino but I think for 616 version he perfect for it will be such a shame if they don't use that look for him.

I think it's a great idea to have villains play little cameos. Just like animated series, the opening usually starts with the hero fighting a villain and then later on in the ep, the real villain shows up.
