Darren Aronofsky Reflects On Almost Directing MAN OF STEEL

Noah director Darren Aronofsky came close to helming The Wolverine, but did you know that he was also in talks to take the reigns of Man of Steel for Warner Bros.? Hit the jump to hear the critically acclaimed filmmaker's thoughts on all that and more...

In an interview with MTV News while promoting Noah, Darren Aronofsky was asked to reflect on very nearly directing The Wolverine, reiterating that he loved both the script and James Mangold's take on the sequel. However, it was simply the cirumstances in his life at the time and the chance to make his latest movie which saw him walk away from the project. You may be surprised to learn (depending on how good your memory is) that he also came close to helming Man of Steel, telling the site that he absolutely" would have taken that job under the right circumstances. "Superman's one of the holy grails," he added. "It's Superman. It's the best superhero," he said. "Batman is great, of course, but it's Superman. He's the same level. That possibility was great."

However, it appears that he didn't turn Warner Bros. down, as after having a "a few conversations" with Christopher Nolan and the studio, the job ended up going to Zack Snyder. "I thought Zack was a great choice, and I loved his 'Watchmen' movie," said Aronofsky. "I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn't hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it. It was interesting to add the pathos that they put into the character. It's a hard one to do. You look at what Christopher Reeve did, and it was perfect, because it captured that 'good old boy' thing. But to try and redo that again and bring that for a modern audience is tough in a post-'Batman' and 'Wolverine' world. It's hard to do that."

Would you like to see Aronofsky finally helm a comic book movie?

Let's not forget before Nolan got the job for 'Begins', Aronofsky was all but signed to do Batman: Year One.

Requiem is an incredible movie. I would've loved to see his take on Wolverine(although it would be almost impossible to better Mangold's film), and maybe he could've done more for Superman than Snyder. Although I'm not a good critic for Superman, because I hate the character. Maybe someday a director will be able to breathe life into the character and make me care... Aronofsky could maybe be that guy.

I don't think his style would have blended well with Superman, although I can't say it would've looked much different as MOS was bit gloomy at times. However Snyder creates better productions and environments (imo), and I love his storytelling abilities so I'm glad the DCCU has him down for story in BvS. No worries for how it will look either as he has Fong to collab with him once more.

@OmegaDaGod

Noah had a ton of CGI.

And I don't think Snyder has a problem directing actors at all. My biggest problem with Snyder is his sense of pacing and tonal balance.

But yes, Aronofsky is a truly fantastic director. He would great for Moon Knight or Batman.

I wanted to love this movie so much, but I just couldn't. Hopefully Tsujihara changes the direction of the DCCU for the better.

I definitely didn't like MoS. I do concede that it was a well made film. I do like Snyder's work. I though Goyer's script was terrible though. Completely lacking in character development.

And the simple reason that I don't like Superman, is because he is what he is. The Big Blue Boy Scout. I find the character EXTREMELY boring. And very much overpowered. I challenge ANY director to make me care about Superman, to liven the character up, to simply make him interesting. That's my goal for a Superman movie.

I think Aronofsky would have given MOS a unique and never before seen take. Would've been interesting. HisWveine concept and ideas were great as well. I read that he really wanted no mutants but wolverine and he wante to heavily display ninjas and samurai culture and have Logan train as a samurai which would be faithful to the comic arc. I'm happy with what THE WOLVERINE brought but this would've been cool too

@Atumbem

It was bland, boring and uninspiring because Goyer wrote Superman with Batman in mind.

LOL!!! I love DBZ, favorite TV show ever. But yeah, ridiculous pacing to it. Did you know that the Frieza battle on Namek holds the record for the longest fight ever shown on television?

Maybe he does Justice League? Although, I'm actually hoping for the rumor of them filming BvS and JL at the same time to be true.

And I'd imagine Affleck is going to direct the solo Batman films; so maybe give Aronofsky Wonder Woman or GL reboot.

That is one of the dumber things I have ever heard. You're telling me we should still have golden age batman and superman running around? Good God just stop, stuff changes get over it.
