Drew Goddard Confirmed As Director Of SPIDER-MAN Spin-Off, THE SINISTER SIX

While it was revealed last year that The Cabin in the Woods director was attached to write and possibly direct Sony's planned Sinister Six spin-off, it has now been confirmed that he will also helm the movie which will focus on the formation of the villainous team. Read on for details!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard will indeed direct Sinister Six, the planned spin-off from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise which he will also be writing. He was originally hired back in December, but there was no deal in place for him to also helm the movie at the time; it was simply an option. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon are still working on Venom, with Kurtzman already confirmed to direct that project. As Goddard is now confirmed to direct Sinister Six, his involvement with Netflix's Daredevil becomes less clear. We know he's writing that, but will directing this Spider-Man spin-off eliminate the chance of him also directing the first episode when it shoots this summer. We'll just have to wait and see how the schedules all work out, as a lot of this depends on when Sony want Sinister Six by! For now, be sure to sound off with your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

How and why are they making a Sinister Six movie without Spider-Man?

I hope we soon get a timeline, like when we can expect this to be released, Venom too -- even if it's not a real release date, but something like "Estimated for Summer 2017" etc

How would a sinister six centered movie even work? I'm interested in how this turns out

I don't get how they will make a movie with villains without making them look like good guys. I'd rather see the symbiote appear in TASM 3 with spidey wearing it, then he takes it off and it moves to flash. That is if they don't want a bad venom.

It will probably have a dark ending.

"How can you make a Sinister Six movie without Spiderman?"

If they had Spiderman, then it wouldn't be a Sinister Six movie, it would be a Spiderman movie.

Marvel Studios and Sony are more of a tag team, though. It appears they're fairly collaborative.

I like the idea of a sinister six movie. Like the villain version of The Avengers. Venom, electro, sandman, rhino, doc ock, green goblin... I'm in.

Can't wait for this. Hope this takes place between TASM2 and TASM3. Or maybe between TASM3 and TASM4.

Sony is still under the impression Spider-Man's world is as big as the Marvel and DC universes. How are they so sure people are going to pay to see a Spider-Man-related film without Spider-Man?

I'll see a movie where Spider-Man fights the Sinister Six, but I have no interest to see a movie with just the Sinister Six.

So with 6 baddies, who will challenge them? Another baddie or an obscure hero?

I can't see a Sinister Six movie working. It's not like they are the Thunderbolts or Suicide Squad or something. Those films could work because although the characters start out as villains, they can have an overall arc of having to, probably begrudgingly for some, become the heroes. You can even include a full conversion to "good" for one of the characters while have one of them betray the others. That scenario is rife with possibility.

But the Sinister Six is simply a lame reason to sell Spiderman comics. Team up the villains and test the Wall Crawler's resolve. A movie sans Spiderman sounds like a narrative disaster, especially considering the Amazing universe is spending so much time making these people into villains.

With the sympathies of Lizard and Electro, already, I can see Sony and Goddard going a Thunderbolts route with them. While this works, it also goes far afield of the original sinister six in the comics, which is sure to ruffle feathers among the fanboys, especially on this site.

I don't think we'll know if it'll actually affect his filming for Daredevil. It all depends on when they plan the Sinister 6 film to be released? If it was my lucky guess I'd say 2017.

Hell yes, perfect director for this, directors need to realize that Spider-Man is a light hearted horror story, not some dark gritty tradgety.
