Avi Arad And Matt Tolmach Describe Spider-Man Spin-Off SINISTER SIX As A "Redemption" Story

Wait, what?! I'm not sure about you guys, but I'd much rather see the Sinister Six taking on Spider-Man instead of finding "redemption"! However, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 produce Avi Arad believes that we'll all love seeing the villains find their way back. Read on for the bizarre details...

Maybe it's just me, but when it was revealed that Sony were working on a Sinister Six movie, I envisioned it as an event picture like The Avengers where they would all team-up to take out Spider-Man. Perhaps the unique draw would be that the movie would take place from their perspective (making Spidey the "villain" so to speak"), and while that could still happen, it atcually sounds as if producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach have something far more unusual in mind!

"There's no such thing as just a villain," Matt Tolmach told IGN Movies in a recent interview. "There are villains by virtue of choices that people make but they always begin as humans, as characters. As flawed people; as tragic people. You know great movies have been made about a bunch of bad guys who get together to do something. Those are sometimes the greatest characters to watch. A bunch of broken people coming together for whatever reason."

Meanwhile, Avi Arad’s vision for this version of the Sinister Six sounds even more peculiar, as he seemed to be under the impression that audiences will enjoy seeing the likes of Green Goblin and Rhino find redemption than they would be seeing them take on Spider-Man. "As long as there's that one thing in common: they'll hate Spider-Man. They'll hate him because he's so different from them. But then, you know when you sit by yourself somewhere and you think about it, they all had a different life at one time and that's what's so beautiful about the Spider-Man universe. They have amazing stories if you look at it. And everybody's looking for redemption; they're unforgiven. Would you see one of the Sinister Six starting to feel like that? Yes. And people love it, by the way. They love when a villain finds his way back because we're all very forgiving." What do you guys think about these comments? Sound off below!

Hopefully it's good. I don't want to have to choose whether I root for the Sinister Six or Spidey when they inevitably go up against eachother. But I like what they said earlier when they said that there are villains who are just pure evil, and then those that are just misunderstood. It'd be nice if they explored that and how the evil ones just corrupt the not so bad ones

Ok.... well I may have just lost my desire for the spideyverse to join with the MCU........

Damn....I was hoping they'd do a kinda Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers thing with this...sounds like that's what they're doing.

Come on, a group of psychopaths trying to go legit, led by a nut who can barely control himself? Ought to be very interesting.

These producers, writers, and directors need to understand that Spider-Man and Batman exists because of these baddies, that is why Spidey and Bats are so popular.

Do not try to fix something that is not broken.

Also, REALLY sounds like Spider-Man isn't a part of this, so these guys are the main characters. Flawed characters are the most interesting, and these guys have flaws in spades.

Hmm, I actually really like this idea. As long as they do end up fighting Spider-man at some point.

Why do comic fans STILL insist on expecting literal page-to-screen translations of comic books? You can count on one hand how many comic movies play out exactly like the books. Even Watchmen changed some things.

It shouldn't be a teamup film that focuses on their plans and strategies goes on how to kill Spidey and then showcase that battle.
DaVinci31

I rather see them turn down this "redemption", make it a tragedy.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 4/11/2014, 9:36 AM
The guys who wrote Star Trek 2 wrote Spidey 2 so---I expect shit. You can te they try to over crowd the film as some sinister six pre team up but didn't they Learn anything from Spidey 3?? You gotta have a slow calculating build up to sinister six. What made them think they could do this?

No, its not like Suicide Squad, to the two people that said that.

Suicide Squad were put together by the government, had bombs strapped to their necks, and FORCED to go do missions.

That isn't the same thing and WANTING to find redemption. Thats being made to do something so you don't die.

Two totally different things.

I find it funny this is suppose to be a redemption story for characters we have no idea who the [frick] they are and how the hell they get their powers or weapons. The only thing they can do is take the already established four villains of the first two Spiderman movies, of course assuming Electro and Green Goblin live come on we all know Rhino will live small one off character gets captured, and then they have to build up 2 other villains explain their back stories and how the hell they got their powers. Lastly this is what I feared making the villains into good guys such a waste of time and the same thing goes for Venom.

This is the major issue with Sony they can't really make a universe building movies which they are trying to do because the only thing they own are Spider-man characters. Alot of the Spider-Man allies are either clones or different timeline Spider-Mans or other Marvel characters. Spider-Man has a diverse rogue gallery much like Batman but like Batman they are generally just his. There is not a lot of growth for this universe to do and I predict it will badly suffer and burn in the end. When I first heard they wanted to make a Sinister Six film and Venom film I know it was a bad idea and time will tell if it happens.
