THE FANTASTIC FOUR To Be A "Coming Of Age" Story; New Details On Age And Origin

Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) talks in detail about his and Josh Trank's take on The Fantastic Four, stating that the younger team will be "older than high school" and drops some hints about the origin story for the foursome in the reboot, with perhaps an Ultimate inspiration...

"We’re definitely telling a younger story that the original films did," Simon Kinberg revealed in an interview with Den of Geek recently when asked if the casting of Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm was an indication that the reboot will feature a take on the team similar to that of their Ultimate Universe counterparts. "They’re older than high school, but they’re not quite grown into the world. If anything, this is a coming of age story. It depends on what books you look at. There are some, like the Ultimate books, that tell this story. So it is an origin story of the Fantastic Four, and it does follow them before they really know what a superhero is." Of all the comics in Marvel's Ultimate line, Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar's take on the characters never really connected with audiences as much as The Ultimates or Ultimate Spider-Man, so whether basing the movie on this series is a smart idea is debatable. As for whether or not we'll see the team travel into space and gain their powers through cosmic rays, Kinberg remained frustratingly vague. "There is archetypal imagery of how they get their powers, for sure, and it does involve some sort of scientific travel." What do you guys think? Be sure to sound off below!

I don't think they would have the balls to use Reed as the Maker from the Ultimates

This could be good. Remember when everyone was attacking First Class before it came out and then it was released and considered one of the best superhero movies? I'll give this the benefit of the doubt until I see it.

@MRCBM56 well this is bad news for me because I don't care for the Ultimate stories. I liked Ultimate Spider-Man for the most part but even then they're certain things I didn't like in the series.

I wonder if FOX or hell any studio would have the balls to have the Marvel Zombies in it. Maybe just have the zombie FF. Build up to it with Reed talking to himself from another world as a stinger and then use it as a plot in the next film. Even as a quick cameo for a scene would be cool. But it would probably NEVER happen.

MBJ is going to suck, though. Don't care if Johnny's black. Let him be black. MBJ still isn't Johnny material.

I hope they make Doom menacing as [frick]. Make him look as if he'd handle the X-Men with no problem. Fox is only getting started with their villains IMO, too much time spent with Magneto.

The problem with the young cast is if they are having them just out of high school (possibly early 20's) then they're a little too young for space travel, correct? So my guess is, like "Chronicle", either a fallen meteorite will give them powers or there will be a cosmic storm that breaks out on Earth and they become who they are. But Kinberg does say 'scientific travel' but this could not mean going into space--- scientific travel could mean taking a class trip to some place to study something and then by some circumstance, the four get their powers.

Oh, and for those not familiar with Ultimate, that take deals with a facility for child prodigies and researching scientific breakthroughs. That aspect will be fine.

You're telling me this is a coming of age story and they're learning how to use their powers. In other words this is a retold story of the first movie, which got poor reviews, mixed with The Amazing Spider-Man, which was not well received.

I agree with Dinotron. This sounds dumb. Nothing about this movie, other than being based on a great comic book, makes me ever want to see it come to fruition.

Miles Teller and Kate Mara are generally pretty great. I expect they stand a chance of elevating things.
