UPDATE: Disney Announces Plans For New Novels Set In The STAR WARS EPISODE VII Continuity

So, we now know that the "Expanded Universe" isn't canon, but Disney has today announced plans for a new series of novels which ARE set in the same continuity as J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII. The first? A prequel to upcoming Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels. Check it out!

Following today's announcement of Lucasfilm's new unified storytelling approach, Disney Publishing Worldwide is proud to announce their first step into that larger world, beginning with Del Rey Books. The publishing program will feature new adult fiction novels set in the beloved galaxy far, far away, and will be closely connected to the cinematic entertainment currently in development at Lucasfilm.

Star Wars novels consistently rank on the New York Times Bestseller lists -- from the very first tie-in novel, an adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope released by Del Rey in 1976, to the recently published Star Wars: Kenobi -- and dozens of titles in between. With over 75 million copies sold worldwide, these books have captured the imaginations and creativity of authors who have enriched the Star Wars experience for fans around the globe.

Going forward, Lucasfilm has begun mapping out the narrative future of Star Wars storytelling that will appear on film and television and in other media so that all projects will benefit from real-time collaboration and alignment. The future Star Wars novels from Disney Publishing Worldwide and Del Rey Books will now be part of the official Star Wars canon as reflected on upcoming TV and movie screens.

"With the establishment of the Lucasfilm Story Group and our even greater focus on unified storytelling, we expect our entire publishing program to be stronger and more meaningful than ever before," said Jeanne Mosure, senior vice president and group publisher, Disney Publishing Worldwide. "We're extremely excited to kick off this new strategy with Del Rey Books."

The first novel to benefit from this deeper collaboration is Star Wars: A New Dawn, by bestselling author John Jackson Miller. Set prior to the events of the forthcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels, this novel tells the story of how two of the lead characters of the series, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, came to cross paths. To tell this important backstory, Miller benefited from contact with series executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman, who together ensured this tale will be part of the Star Wars canon of storytelling going forward. It is scheduled for hardcover and eBook release on September 2, 2014.

"We're extremely proud of the hundreds of amazing Star Wars books we've published at Del Rey," said Scott Shannon, SVP, publisher, Del Rey and Digital Content, "And now we're excited to finally be able to call our upcoming novels true canon -- a single, cohesive Star Wars storyline -- all while keeping the amazing backlist of Star Wars Legends content in print."

Following Star Wars: A New Dawn, the all-new Star Wars fiction line will continue with the following 2014/2015 titles:

STAR WARS: TARKIN
James Luceno
11/4/14

STAR WARS: HEIR TO THE JEDI
Kevin Hearne
January 2015

STAR WARS: LORDS OF THE SITH
Paul Kemp
March 2015

In years past, the storylines that would appear in print and on screen were developed separately, resulting in an "Expanded Universe" that differed in ways large and small from the filmmaker's "canon." These rich stories provide a treasure trove of characters to fall in love with -- and deep worlds to explore and will live on in both physical and digital editions, newly-branded as Star Wars Legends.

No. This is gonna be FAR too confusing and not worth it. This is really just exaggerated fan service.

Does every franchise need some big universe behind it? Just because Marvel and DC are doing it doesn't mean everyone else needs to. I highly doubt that die hard fans will even be enough to turn a profit on these books.

I approve. @DEVLIN712 One of the things about the EU was that it expanded the Star Wars universe, I honestly don't see the problem with this.

I approve.

Star Wars Legends, huh?

This isn't a problem at all. Everything that came before is officially non-canon, but IS free to be mined for concepts and characters.

Meanwhile, everything published going forward WILL be full-canon and will properly sync up with the canon of the films and TV shows.

It makes perfect sense. Divides the EU into the Pre-Disney non-canon and the post-Disney Canon. Done deal.

@ Devlin

If Star Wars novels didn't make money then they wouldn't still be writing them after 30 years or however long.

This is a GREAT way to wipe the slate clean for new fans. Now, in theory, one fan could own the entire Star Wars canon if they chose to. They could have all of the films, the Clone Wars shows, Rebels, and could pick up all of the upcoming books and comics that are canon as they are released.

Before, the sheer amount of the EU, the insane amount of content is a big part of what kept someone like me out of it. Because it was essentially infinite, there was no way to know it all. Now, they get to start back at page one 'the films and shows are canon, and anything in the future that is released is canon'

A very neat way of handling it, much better than picking and choosing which stories are allowed to be canon and which aren't.

I just REALLY hope they have Marc Thompson voicing the Audiobooks, he was awesome!

@ ndwwrestler

Here's to hoping that Thrawn will show up.

I would be cool with him being an important part of this new series. Not necessarily the main villain, but he could be the main Grand Admiral of the remnants of the Imperial Fleet, while new Sith are trying to rise up and repair the Empire or something like that.

@ndw
I agree that it can work in the concept of the EU, I think that it won't work in the context of bridging/establishing a background for a movie-verse

@CorndogBurglar I would actually lose my mind (in a good way) if Thrawn was to even show up in the Rebel series.

Hopefully he'd be voiced by either Marc Thompson or Corey Burton.

I never assumed those expanded universe stories were cannon.

Maybe these would be worth the read.

BTW
Dark Empire is still tops for post Episode VI.

i watched a new hope today, good movie, so good!!, i am just rewatching the original trilogy ,i really wanna see EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and Return of the Jedi soon again!!!!,i love star wars(barring the prequels with their boring political mumbo jumbo, bland and lifeless dialogue and characters and imo the worst thing besides Jar Jar, the bad characterization of Anakin, the clone wars cartoon did a much better job of developing Anakin and his characterization was MUCH better then it was in the prequels)

ndwwrestler2 - 4/25/2014, 1:16 PM
@DEVLIN712 I see where you're coming from. Although if these don't work out, I don't think that they'll make the movies worse. And if they do work, then that just means that we (the fans), win.

I'm looking forward to A New Dawn and Lords of the Sith, but I'm mostly looking forward to Heir to the Jedi based on that cover-art.

I'm cool with dumping existing EU as far as canon goes, but I am hesitant towards any of the new EU. First, I doubt it will be any better than the old EU, and second, even though these new stories will be in the same canon I'm sure nothing that happens in them will have real impact on the movies besides maybe telling a little of the in between that won't be referred to anyway

Star Wars had this going before Marvel and DC started, that is continuing the stories of their MOVIES with other forms of MEDIA. Even now Marvel's cinematic universe is not connected to the stories of their on going comics. Where as SW will link other media to the on going movie story line. the original EU wasn't as closely looked over as this new one will be now. George always did say that the EU wasn't necessarily how he saw events continuing the saga even though Lucasfilf ok'd the EU projects. i think this is a great route as the original EU will be available to be mined from for future SW projects.

the old republic novels could easily be part of this new canon. i wonder about; the Vader, Maul, Plagueis and most recent Obi-Wan; novels that were written. they would't wouldn't seem to contradict any upcoming SW.

Heir to the Jedi looks like a must. Maybe it will fill us with how the new jedi order will be formed in the cannon. It should be amazing because the current actors can't do that period of time (you know, they're old)

Dammit, there goes any chance of episode 7 being titled A New Dawn. That was my favorite rumored title. It was so perfectly with a new era and new generation of characters.

Well shit.

Episode VII could be titled "A New Era" or "A New Frontier"
