Passing the Reins: From Tobey to Andrew

Passing the Reins: From Tobey to Andrew

Tobey, you were the first and you took Spiderman to incredible heights, but it is time to leave the reins in the hands of a very capable young actor.

It is obvious that there are very high expectations for Sony Pictures’ The Amazing Spiderman and how The Social Network star, Andrew Garfield, will play the web slinger. Let me start by saying that I am a proponent of Garfield and believe that he will bring a certain level of depth and realism to the character of Peter Parker/Spiderman, much like Christian Bale has so beautifully done with Bruce Wayne/Batman; but has Bale's performance caused us to completely forget about Michael Keaton? The answer is NO, it most definitely has not (don't worry; this writer will never bring up Clooney or Kilmer).
I have read far too many blogs and reports from fans of which the main focus is reasons why Andrew Garfield will be a better Spiderman than Tobey Maguire when the fact is, it is not the portrayals of the character that should be compared, but the different perspectives in which they take. To be frank, no one will ever be able to replace what Toby Maguire did with the Spiderman franchise, there’s a reason why Spiderman 3 holds the spot of third biggest opening in movie history right behind The Dark Knight (and let’s be honest, Spiderman 3 wasn't exactly the best out of the trilogy).
So to be very clear, Andrew Garfield is not replacing Toby Maguire, but more taking up his mantle with a fresh new perspective on the iconic superhero.

Too true. Agree completely. There's no reason we can't enjoy both portrayals.

Nicely said. People like to make everything into a competition. I enjoyed Tobey as Peter and I think Andrew will do a great job. I'll have to see Andrew's perfomance, but I think when we look back on their portrayals, we'll probably see Tobey as more like the classic Peter of the 60s and Andrew as the more modern Peter.

Agree 100%. Tobey Fans need to get over it and just except that it's a new take on the character. Andrew fans need to just remember what Tobey did for Spider-man. For a span of six seven or eight years, he WAS Peter Parker.

inwardly tobey is pissed at sony cause spiderman was his bread and butter. never seen garfield act but to me they needed someone younger for the role if it is gonna be sonys property for a while. these movies take time for production and if he does 3 that is at least 6 to 7 years. he will be in his mid 30s and will start getting harder to hide his age. wondered why they didnt film 2 movies back to back so it would be cheaper and all the actors would be in place
