Exclusive Interview: Green Lantern - First Flight Director Lauren Montgomery

For director Lauren Montgomery, the animated Wonder Woman DVD film was a breath of fresh air, giving her the opportunity to work with the emotions of a female character that a project such as Superman: Doomsday might not necessarily do. Hopefully she enjoyed the opportunity, however, because she’s back in the realm of the macho superhero with this summer’s animated Green Lantern: First Flight.

“The storyline for Green Lantern is essentially Hal Jordan’s first encounter with the Green Lantern Corps,” she explains in this exclusive interview. “We didn’t want to focus purely on an origin story, but we also didn’t want to skip on an origin story being that this was the first Green Lantern solo movie. So we tried to get it out of the way right in the beginning so that the rest of the movie focuses on him with the Green Lantern Corps, kind of learning how to interact with them and proving himself to them. His mentor is Sinestro in this case, and Sinestro has not yet become a Yellow Lantern. He’s still a Green Lantern, so we get to see their interaction on that level as well.”

The film is the story of Hal being taught by Sinestro the nature of what it is to be a Green Lantern. “But then,” Montgomery adds, “Hal also has to make his own decisions about whether that’s right or wrong and standing up for himself. It’s kind of like a Training Day type scenario. Let’s face it, with a name like Sinestro, you can’t stay good for very long, so he does turn to the Yellow Lantern and Hal has to take him on.”
While on some level this sounds like an Anakin/Obi-Wan relationship from the Star Wars prequels (though in the case of GL it’s the mentor who goes rogue), Montgomery says that isn’t necessarily the case.
“There are elements of betrayal there,” she allows, “but at the same time, when Hal comes into it Sinestro isn’t the nurturing father type anyway. They probably don’t have too much time to develop a loving relationship, so it’s not as emotional as the Star Wars relationship, but it’s the same general feeling.”

Totally agree Sinister, this is great to hear! And that's something that never was really treated as it should in the case of how Sinestro went rogue. And besides taht Hal rocks bog time, he deserves that on-screen treatment since long time ago. Can't wait, great First Flight!

I love these and the best part is it mean we don't have to watch the stuipd live action movie because no matter what this will be 10 times better.

best part is these may led into the Sinestro crop movie they have play for next year, I hope we see John and Kyle in the movie as cameo

well Leee777 I think its going to be a hard movie to sell I mean just look at the Watchmen and all the fuss that has made with the fans

the thinks fans need to understand is people aged and a lot of their actors don't want to do Hero movie for 4 or 5 year which is how long these Avengers movie going to be if done in Live action BUT if it done the RIGHT way the way ALL hero movie should be done and thats in cartoon from why not

Yes I love Green Lantern. He has been a favorite of mine since I was a little kid. I kinda hope that kyle and John are NOT in this movie because Kyle always came across as a little whiney and John just seemed like he was small fish in a big pond. Am I crazy for feeling that way? I do like Guy but only as that cocky jerk that gets under peoples skin. So it might be cool to see him interact with the Corp, but if this is the beginning I doubt we will see any of the other Green Lanterns from earth. You know what else I would kinda like to have in this movie, is the guy who used to do Green Lanterns voice from the old Superfriends cartoon cast as his voice in this movie. See unlike Superman whose alter ego is a dork named Clark or Batmans alter ego richie rich Bruce, Green Lanterns alter ego is a bada$$ pilot who would kick your a$$ with or without that ring. Hal Jordan is the man. Anyway my point is this the guy who did his voice in the Superfriends had that really deep voice and if you heard him yell you knew your a$$ was grass. So now that I have rambled on I just want to say that this should be awesome simply because ALL the DC animated movies have been great so I have no reason to believe that this wont be just as great, if not better than, the rest. Oh yeah I have a feeling that DC has pinpointed how to make a succesful movie and the actual Green Lantern movie will be awesome also.

I'm not a Kyle fan, but I think he has a right to be a little whiney. The whole fate of the Corp was dumped on his lap, he's had multiple women in his life die because of this life, now he's getting douched because Hal is back in the mantle. He is whiney though, I'll admit that, but for good reason. Anyway, Go GL!!

I think it would be cool, if they did a FLASH animated movie to get John Welsley Ship ( Tv's Flash ) to do the voice over!!! ; )

anyways you can almost never go wrong with animated movies cause who doesnt love a good cartoon. however the Iron Man one was god awful so maybe i am wrong. i hope it kicks ass personally.

Matowar
Matowar - 3/1/2009, 8:32 PM
I completely forgot about the Iron Man animated movie. Now im upset again, that was so baaaaaaaad it hurt to watch it all.

@lee777

the only person who should do the voice of the flash should be michael rosenbaum and no1 else. If any else does it then it will suck.

As far as the live action film for green lantern, jensen ackles has the right look and physic for the part. I fully support him bein casted.
RaxusPrime
RaxusPrime - 3/2/2009, 11:29 AM
Well that is the beauty about jensen ackles he is young enough to play kyle which is who I was refering to him playing but also he is old enough to play hal Jordan as well. Either way it's a win/win if they cast him which I hope they do bc he does a great job acting on supernatural
