Henry Cavill refused to take Steroids for MAN OF STEEL

Playing a superhero isn't just laughing your way to the bank. Henry Cavill spoke to USA Weekend in detail about the immense physical effort and discipline that goes into a role like this, specially Superman, the biggest, buffest and greatest Superhero of them all.

On why it was important to him to transform his body
It was a big responsibility. It was very important to represent the character’s physicality in the right way. I was living and breathing Superman. I just wanted to do this right.

On being impressed with his own transformation
I have shrunk down to a more normal size now. You should have seen me then. I was considerably bigger. There are a couple of shots of me that I think, ‘My goodness. I was definitely a large chap.'

On avoiding steroids to achieve his physique
(Mark Twight) asked, ‘Would you like to use steroids or HGH (human growth hormone) to get to where you want to go?’ I immediately said no. And he said, ‘Good. Because if you did, I wouldn’t train you.’ To take a shortcut to get to that place is not what Superman represents. That was important to me.

On would he be ready to again train so hard for the sequel
Absolutely. Yes, it was hard work. Yes, there were points I thought I couldn’t do it. But you can do it. And I did.

Of course he hasn't took steroids! I can't name an actor that have. No disrespect to you but this shouldn't even be news because I'm sure this hasn't even crossed people minds. Then again I may be wrong.

Its a parlor game these days. Anytime an actor gets big, people say he took steroids.

I'm still not excited for this movie, but this guy does know the right things to say to make people happy.

I salute him

But also knowing more than a few folk that have used 'roids I wouldn't blame nor cast him in a different light had he opted for them. The fact is you still have to bust your ass and adhere to a proper diet.

But when you're in his position you have the advantage of that being literally your job, to get big. You have a trainer and I assume a dietitian helping all the way

@jazzman

Jackman also looks like he has taken steroids. I am not saying he has, but he looks like that.

And the Rock has surely taken them. Might be even Whalberg for Pain & Gain.

But Cavill himself said he cares. That it wouldn't be right to take steroids for the role of Superman.

Man Of Steroids would have been a different movie altogether.
His costume would fit easier over his tiny nuts!

I respect Cavill on going natural.
That said,he's not competing in an athletic event against others so if at some point he needs a "boost" to get back in shape due to injury or even aging..well,no big deal.

Hopefully kids will find out that you can still get muscled up using hard work & not drugs.
Superman indeed.

Tom Hardy did as well for Bane from what the pictures seem to indicate, maybe for Warrior too

Does anyone care about actors thatr get all these plastic surgeries?
Well unlike those taking steroids still requires 100% dedication and effort.
Just saying for folks getting up on their high horses

Tom Hardy?? He was so horribly out of shape in TDKR.

Look at these set photos, very flabby twiggy arms, no definition anywhere and just plain out of shape. I doubt he took steroids to look like that. Just too many cup cakes I think.

I think he just tried to bulk up too quick.
Even on p.e.d.s you have to eat right

He looks extremely ordinary. More like a 'Before' picture than an 'After' picture. Snyder would never have allowed him to look that way.

Man, each time I watch an interview or read his quotes, the more and more I look up to him.

He seriously handled the Jay Leno show like a pro. It was a really terrific interview.

He used to be a pudgy kid like me in school. Bullied and teased. His story is truly incredible.

The only film I've seen him in is The Cold Light of Day and he did incredible in it. It's sad that he nearly gave up acting. He has a wide range in the department.

He speaks so fluent and sincere, it's great. I hope he gets his time in the spotlight, he deserves it. There's no one else I'd rather see as Supes.

KingLeo just so you know Bane wasn't supposed to be cut up like a Abercrombie model in TDKR. His body type was inspired by those strongmen from the circus.

"Cavill is probably lying. I imagine most actors in action flicks have juiced."

Why would he lie? This guy speaks so earnestly and genuinely that I'd believe him. He speaks like a guileless guy.

there is the scene in "Dark Knight Rises", with shirtless Hardy in the sewers. You can clearly see how big he was back then. But @rocky is right. He really tried to bulk up to quick. He wasn't ripped. He was just bulked up. He was in better shape in "Warrior".
It seems his 3 steps training program ended with only 1 step.

@KingLeonidas

Hardy got big for Bane FYI. There are tons of pics you can check on the net for that. The first pic you got is from the football stadium speech when they are far into production and far from shooting the first Bats-Bane fight.

He didn't need to look big anymore and they covered him in badass coat. They only need his acting from that point.
whoa123
whoa123 - 6/8/2013, 4:19 PM
Tom Hardy's Bane isn't exactly a muscle man and like what is said above it was inspired by strongmen and I like that approach. You guys should definitely look a the physique of Hardy in Warrior (great film).

No. After high school I got serious about my weight and really needed to control it. I got with an old buddy that worked at a gym and started eating healthier. I did need help keeping my weight down once I bulked help and @yoss and Mags Gave me some pointers. I do cheat every great once in awhile but it's nothing I can't handle.

I'll take Cavill at his word

but he has every reason to lie.
Do you know the shit storm that would cause in conservative America?
He may be telling the truth but if he did use he wouldn't admit to it
and be a pariah to parents and probably even calls for a boycott by some

Come on the guy has enough sense for that as does WB
