While speaking with MTV about his upcoming animated release, The Book of Life, star Channing Tatum took a few moments to share an update about his upcoming role as Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse and possibly in a standalone film. While reiterating that he can't give away too much about the yet-to-be announced film's status, he does go on to say that the standalone film may be slightly smaller in scale when compared to other superhero origin stories: "We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but not for the first one.

Adding a potential Gambit standalone film to Fox's already impessive slate of upcoming X-Men films, which include Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, & Wolverine 3, should make the next few years very exciting for X-Men fans everywhere. Check out Tatum's full comments in the video below:

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016.

Never mind I read that wrong, I think Channing meant it's going to be different from other superhero movies (no saving the world), which I think a Gambit solo movie shouldn't have.

Sounds like another Fox movie currently in development.

This movie will be great. And Channing Tatum will [frick]ing kill it. He reminds me a lot of Hugh Jackman in a role. An actor who absolutely loves the character he's playing and that will lead to good things. Tatum is improving as an actor by every film. Apparently he gives an oscar worthy performance in Foxcatcher. David Fincher wanted him for his 20000 leagues adaptation. And Tatum will be in the new Coen Brothers movie. Actors improve, and Tatum is definitely a strong talent.

And my interpretation of what Tatum is saying is that Gambit won't be a good guy at first. After all, he is an antihero who started off as a thief. I love this idea that they will give him a film that isn't just a boring casual superhero flick. Let him develop, maybe have his solo film focus on his not so nice pre X-Men background.

But of course, all the MCU lovers will decry this. I believe in Tatum and Gambit.

Yeah it could be really interesting for a solo Gambit movie, his story isn't really a superhero like story at all

Not a fan of Tatum but I suppose I should keep an open mind. Gambit is one of my favorite X-Men.
Hopefully his popularity will make the writers realize many people will want to see Gambit & create a great story.
Attact a solid director & cast...and let's go!

A Gambit movie could be a great way of getting more Sabretooth(also Victor should pop up in the Wolverine 2, to sort of tie things) and Mr sinister

Shuler-Donner + "unique" has given us Origins in the past...that plus Tatum being the cast choice....I dont know. Is Singer involved at all!?? Just seems like Fox gets more of their wins with Singer and boat anchors with Shuler-Donner

That was I think the ONLY episode out of the whole series, where we find out a little more about the Cajun.
But making that into a movie would really good and I hope they play more on Gambit isn't a hero too

I think this film has a good shot a bringing something new to the table for Fox's X-Men universe. However, I think I'd like to get a good idea of what characters they'll have within this film. I have a feeling it'll take to the streets of New Orleans (of course) and it can possibly focus on his interactions with the "Thieves Guild" and how he tears away from them later. It's also a no brainer for who's going to write the script and direct as well. Could be something totally fresh or totally rotten but of course I got high hopes for something new gaining the spotlight.

Instead of Gambit being a hardened scoundrel like in the comics he'll be a lover boy who wants to do the best he can to make his mother proud. Then something something mother killed, something something he turns into a partial badass.

Foxtastic at it's best.
Pasto
Pasto - 10/15/2014, 8:38 AM
And instead of throwing cards like in the comics, he'll wear this signature hat that is lined with metal, and he'll throw it like a boomerang.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 10/15/2014, 8:38 AM
@JoJo1982

I haven't seen it, but I've dabbled in card throwing myself. The basic form is something like this...

...and it doesn't exactly look all that baddass... but it doesn't have to be real card throwing for me to be happy. I was just really really really pissed off in Origins to see that bullshit levitating exorcist shit where he makes a stream of cards fly for no goddamn reason...

That's the one thing about Gambit, I actually like, Fox, and you ruined it!

...*ahem*...

I'm just saying that I hope Gambit throws his cards this time.

Guys, calm down. Everyone says that their story is unique.. So he's saying that his origin tale is going to be unique. That's really saying nothing. So, we'll see.

Btw, I don't think the Mutant world is going back to Marvel anytime soon. If Gambit turns out to be a hit, even LESS. That's going to be pretty unfortunate. It's going to have repercussions on the comic books etc. Damn.
