Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth installment in Paramount's billion-dollar Transformers franchise grossed over $1.08 billion at the box office, easily making it the highest grossing film of the year. Following its success, plans for the fifth and sixth installments were set in motion with Paramount setting an expected 2016 release date for the fifth film.
After Michael Bay, director of the first four films, chose to just produce and not direct the fifth film, it was uncertain whether or not star Mark Wahlberg, who played Cade Yeager, would return to the franchise. While promoting his upcoming release The Gambler, Wahlberg spoke with MTV about the future of the Transformers franchise and seemingly confirmed his involvement in the upcoming sequel as well as possibly another sequel or two: "Yeah, I committed to doing a couple more... you know I can’t speak for Mr. Bay, but something tells me we’ll be on the set soon."
