MARVEL Teams Up With Academy Award Winner John Ridley For Mysterious TV Series

Entertainment Weekly has learned that Marvel Studios has closed a deal with Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) for a mysterious new television series. Details on which character he'll be helping to adapt are scarce, but rumor has it that the top secret deal involves the reinvention of an existing Marvel superhero property for the Disney-owned ABC.

The report suggests that this will be an entirely different project, and not the rumored Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off, although considering the lack of details, there is a small possibility that they are one in the same. If it is an entirely new project, this would mark the ninth television series Marvel has put into production in the last three years following Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The DefendersAgent Carter, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the yet-to-be titled AOS spin-off series.

Currently, Ridley serves as the creator/showrunner/producer of the critically acclaimed crime drama American Crime, which coincidentally also airs on ABC and is expected to receive a second season. He is also slated as one of the writers on Paramount's upcoming Ben-Hur remake.

What do you guys think of this new partnership? Ridley's definitely a talent, so it's certainly a huge get for Marvel, but the bigger question is: which property could Marvel be looking to adapt, or reimagine, next? It's easy to look at characters like Spider-Man, Black Widow, and/or Hawkeye receiving a television treatment, but with their box office potentials, don't expect any of Marvel's current movie stars jumping down to the small-screen. So who else would Marvel want to reimagine? Cloak And Dagger? Moon Knight? The Punisher? Elektra? Ghost Rider? Blade? Mockingbird? Falcon? War Machine? Winter Soldier? She-Hulk? Some, possibly all, of those characters would probably be better suited for a Netflix series and/or a movie, but who do you guys think it could be? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Deathlok would be great, but not so happy with his portrayal on AoS (and I love AoS)...wished they would have put more $ in on his suit, etc.

Man, they still have 4 Netflix shows to do and now they're developing 2 new shows for ABC. They're going all out on TV.

If they want Spiderman on the small screen just grab one of their other character and spidermanize it. Just as CW is batmanizing the arrow. It is better than nothing.

Are we positive this ISN'T the spinoff show?

I love the MCU, but I don't want a media overload situation.

Punisher. The only hero were missing from the MCU, or the TV-MCU.
Unless he appears in Civil War or something.
But it should be R-Rated, at least with the same top of violence that we are getting on Daredevil, then we're done.

It's an already existing property, so I doubt it's Punisher, Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger or any other guys we haven't met in the movies/shows yet.

We hear the deal involves reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property for ABC—but all sides are staying quiet on exactly which title Ridley is adapting.

I don't like what I am reading here. Seems like they are going to take a character(s) and change his/her race and have them deal with real life events.
