The Team Is Complete As Becky Gomez Joins POWER RANGERS As The 'Yellow Ranger'
Let the countdown to 2017 begin as Empire actress Becky Gomez has joined the cast of Lionsgate's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film as the Yellow Ranger. She completes the core team of five.
And, that makes five! Lionsgate & Saban Entertainment have just revealed who will be playing the fifth and presumably final Ranger in their upcoming Dean Israelite-directed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot. Singer/songwriter Becky Gomez, better known as Becky G., has been cast as the Yellow Ranger. She'll likely utilize the "Saber-Toothed Tiger" dinozord powers in battle and will follow in the footsteps of the late Thuy Trang, who portrayed Trini Kwan on the original series.
Gomez now joins an intriguing young cast, which features newcomers Dacre Montogomery (Betrand The Terrible) as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott (The Martian) as the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin (Marco Polo) as the Black Ranger, and RJ Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) as the Blue Ranger. Rumors have circulated about their character names, but nothing has been set in stone just yet. A previous description of Gomez's character described her as such:
Trini – 17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she’ll never admit it – least of all to herself.
Like her fellow castmates, the 18-year-old Gomez is relatively fresh on the acting scene, her biggest credit to date being a two-episode guest arc on Fox's Empire. However, judging by her massive social media following, which can be attributed to her successful singing career, she may be the most well-known of the five young actors.
Check out the announcement below:
After 10,000 years of imprisonment, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her loyal minions are freed when astronauts on a routine mission in space accidentally open her dumpster prison on the Moon. A team of “five teenagers with attitude” — Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy and Trini — receive superpowers beyond their wildest dreams so they can defend the Earth as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
