Director Juan Antonio Bayona Exits Brad Pitt's WORLD WAR Z Sequel

In a shocking turn of events, Deadline is reporting that due to scheduling conflicts, director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible) has exited Paramount Pictures' & Plan B Entertainment's upcoming World War Z sequel, which stars Academy Award-winner Brad Pitt and has a script from Steven Knight (Pawn Sacrifice) & Dennis Kelly (Black Sea).

Paramount is eagerly trying to kick off production on World War Z 2 this summer in order to get it ready for its wide release in Summer 2017. Bayona is currently deep into post-production on his latest directorial venture A Monster Calls, which stars Liam Neeson (Taken) & Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and felt that he couldn't finish his commitments on that film before this summer when he would have had to shift gears to World War Z 2.

The studio released this statement to confirm his departure: “Bayona is no longer able to make World War Z 2 this year, and it is our ambition to do so. He is a wonderful director and we hope to work with him soon.

Expect the studio to actively start searching for a replacement and considering all of the seemingly insurmountable production difficulties the first installment had, this one seems relatively small in comparison.

What do you guys think? Who would you want to see direct the sequel? Sound off with your thoughts below!

World War Z hits theaters June 9, 2017

@DrDoom I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would given all the reports during production.

@FrozenJoy A lot of these blockbusters will cannibalize each other. I doubt superhero films will be affected much; maybe their ceilings are a bit lower but not every superhero film needs to hit $1 bil!

Dumb fun first movie but this really doesn't need a sequel. Just feels like a waste of digital space that will probably not make as much as the first one and no one will care.

I don't see the point of a sequel to begin with. Not that this news is remotely "shocking" anyway. Such pre-production changes happen all the time.

I dug the first one barely enough (since I had zero expectations) but it doesn't need sequel.

No interest in a sequel. I would however love to see all the footage from the alternate Russia ending. Don't think they filmed enough for a complete alternate edit, but it would still be cool to see what they did shoot. If I remember correctly, everything from the plane onward would have been completely different from what we got.

I hope they abandon ship on this franchise. I fell asleep on the first one.

Zombies? Yeah I'll watch. Actually World War Z might be my second favorite zombie movie so I'm probably a little more pumped than that.

And hey guys I did it! Another year through without watching a whole college football game. Hooray. #collegefootballsucks #prosdoitbetter #whyamImakinghashtags #Imtoooldforthisshift

Brad Pitt is my hero!
DCEU want an Oliver Queen that can keep up with Afflecks Batman? Make Brad Pitt the Green Arrow.
Now that would be a Green Arrow I'd like to see.

The ending to the first movie felt like the middle of the film. I remember thinking "What the f*ck? It's over???"

The first was a slight disappointment. But i'd watch a second.

Although, how do you make a sequel after the ending of the first. The humans have a vaccine that makes the zombies useless. You'd think the war would end pretty soon after that.

[frick] this. Let me know when someone has the balls in Hollywood to make World War Z based off the book's content rather than just the title.

The first movie was so disappointing. It's been too long since there was a good Brad Pitt film.
