Can Superman Fly Without Krypton?

Can Superman Fly Without Krypton?

I know, I know, such a peculiar question, but with the Man of Steel's origin rights all tied up, could we get a Superman movie without any mention of Krypton? We might just have to.

DC Entertainment's loss of Superman's origin is painting a pretty cloudy picture of any new Superman movie. It raises the interesting question of how to bring Superman to the big screen, make it a reboot, but leave out the most well known origin story in comics.

How you might ask is doing that possible? A new story line has surfaced called "Superman: Earth One", a out of continuity graphic novel written by J. Michael Straczynski that could provide the ground work for a Krypton less Superman.

This from Aint it Cool news:

"Clark comes to Metropolis in his 21st year to decide what he really wants to do. And this is someone who can be anyone, do anything. If he keeps his background secret, as he's done for the preceding 21 years, he can be the best athlete the world has ever known, he could be the next Stephen Hawking, could take away the golf crown from Tiger Woods, create patents that could earn billions. He can finally step out of the shadows and into the light.

By contrast, if he chooses to become Superman, then Clark must live forever in the shadows, dedicated to a life of service and self-sacrifice that could eventually get him killed. That's a hard choice for anybody to make, let alone a 21 year old kid who wants to look after his mom and is lured by the idea of money and success and fame. So the story is about Clark's Gethsemane moment, when he has to finally make that choice, why he makes it, and what follows after.

Against this backdrop, we flash back to his life growing up in Smallville, so we can see how the Kents helped mold him and protect him and get him to a point in his life where he can finally make this most difficult of choices."

This sounds like a good approach for a new Superman movie but this idea screams 'Smallville' to me, and I have had enough of 'Smallville'.

Forget any mention of who might actually be Superman in the next installment of the franchise. DC has to now worry about changing almost everything we know about the Man of Steel's origin to fit the requirements of the most recent court ruling that puts all of Krypton out of DC's reach. Hopefully they just go ahead and drop the origin story. In realty that's all we have really had of Superman since the 70's. It's been done to death. Please make a Superman movie were Superman fights someone his own size. Superman 2 was cool but they can even step that up with today's technology. Now all we need is someone to grow the nards to make Superman PG-13 so that we can see some real action.

Yah i seen this, they are also doing Batman of Earth One as well. Really, Why can't they just get it right from the jump start when something is created.

I like the Brainiac idea Sirprize for sure, and I whole heartedly agree about your Luthor comment. Luthor is a great villain no doubt but for the next superman movie hopefully they set it up to were he is in the back ground setting something worse up for superman to deal with not the focus of the main villain. No more real estate adventures.

SirPrize: I agree dude, it seems like DC won’t do anything supes without putting Lex in! There are so many great villains they could use!

On the Krypton dilemma, I feel it is very important to have it in imo, they can’t just cut that out if they make a new film!

They need to get this legal battle sorted asap!

Reboot all the way! ;)

Its a shame that as many times as Lex has been portrayed on the big screen(30 yrs), that he's never got the justice he deserves as a brilliant scientist, business mogul bad ass.

I would love to see Brianiac, but his ties to Krypton definitely complicates things.

Its all about Darksied! He should sit back in the shadows, pulling the strings of super alien soldiers hell bent on killing Superman to appease their master. Eventually, DS reveals his self, hence the BIGGEST SMACK DOWN FIST TO CUFFS IN THE HISTORY OF MOVIES!!!!

I pretty much agree with everyone, but i really don't know how they would make a movie without even mentioning krypton, unless they just referred to him as an alien.

No krypton no kyrptonite. That makes him indestructible and thats stupid. Just can the franchise. Superman I and II will just have to suffice, the rest sucked so i ignore them completely.

This is so simple. YES! Reboot the damn thing.

Do the same thing Nolan did with Batman. Hollywood hasn't done Superman any justice at all.

...and WTF is up with no krypton? I'm not in tune with what you are trying to say.

Superman has the worst weaknesses possible. Lois, Kryptonite and Magic... LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMEEE!!! So i'm definitely happy to learn that Kryptonite is out of the way. Can't really take away the poon-tang so Lois stays but magic is so incredibly campy and the lamest thing possible to incorporate to an alien superhero concept. The character DESPERATELY NEEDS a challenge that is beyond his powers and that is to fight a being powerful enough to not need Kryptonite or Magic. So either Dark Seid or Doomsday or BOTH!!! Oh and...

ANNE HATHAWAY FOR LOIS LANE!!!

Even non-comic book fans know his origins! It wouldnt be hard for them to just start a movie with him as Superman without going over the same old stuff we've seen dozens of times before!

However, if no Krypon means no Kryptonite then things could get a little difficult unless you have a villain like Doomsday who Superman wouldnt be completely invulnerable against - in all honesty, I think it would just be easier iof they could find a way to get this whole legal mess sorted but if thats not posible then Im sure that theres a way they could deliver a decent Superman movie in the next few years!

They started many movie franchises midstream. (Remember Star Wars?) Why does every Superman movie need to be his origin??? GAWD if every comic retold us the origin before they got to new material I would have begged out of this genre 20 yrs ago.

Let those that don't know and those that do :). Give us a great story of Superman, hint at his possible background/backstory. At the end of the day those that don't know don't care that they don't know. They went to see the Transformers twice.

They can still use Krypton - they'll just have to, at worst, "license" its use is all.

I hope we get a modernised retelling/retooling of the classic story. All the same elements, but with a modern twist. No campy, lame ass Lex and comic relief goons and molls. No emo, deadbeat-dad, limp-wristed superstalkers. No more real estate scams. Superman. From the comics. Please.

They also need to commit, from the word go, to an epic trilogy.

So, WB - stop pissing about and get on with it.

Just reboot, do it right (come on it really isn't that hard if you embrace the opportunities of the character and really utilise the potential to go HUGE) and if it's great then everyone will forget about the mistakes of the past and love you and give you loads of money. You know it makes sense...

I've always like Superman. I'd rather not the taint of a changed origin upset the meaning of why he HAD to come from another planet. I know I'll recieve some backlash, but I would have it that if worse came to worse, DC just let Superman become stagnate. If they need a boy scout all powerful guy to be leader, bring in, idk, Captain Marvel. But they don't need to change Supes. The creators' family would eventually see that what their fathers had created would begin to lose relevance and DC could later buy back the rights.

Thanks Jman!!! Anne Hathaway is definitely the perfect brunette for Lois Lane especially since we need a competant actress to follow Margot Kidder and Terry Hatcher!!!

Good point though, Phinehas! For the time being, they could switch things up to the big red cheese.

Man F%&K the "Superman" origin story ! We did'nt need to see it yet once-a-damn-gain in that last movie , we already know all of this boring a$$ $hit . Move on with the story already or just let "Doomsday" beat the snot out of him already . It's the supposed "Man of Steel" , it's time for some real action .

A supes movie without krypton seems incomplete to me. They wouldn't be able to show his arrival to earth, his planet's destruction, brainiac, general zod, kryptonite, the fortress of solitude, kryptonian symbols (like his "s" sign), and many other important pieces of the superman mythos. They need to just fix this stupid legal battle and give us a decent superman movie.

Hey Shaman I disagree on the magic part. U can't have someone so powerful & not have a weakness. Take in point: Hulk/Bruce Banner, Batman & Bruce Waynes $, Dark Phoniex/Jean Grey, Gladiator/ his confidence Level etc.

Spock- Magic sucks, bud. There's nothing you can do to make it remotely appealing in a superman film. And we've had enough of Kryptonite over the past. Brawn for brawn, my friend, brawn for brawn is where it's at! All he needs as a weakness is to find someone of his own size and strenght to tango! I mean, what has made Marvel characters and Batman way more popular than DC's gods are the insurmountable odds they have to deal with. Not an "achilles heel" so to speak. The "achilles heel" weakness is lame and overused to begin with. The most memorable moment of all the superman films was the General Zod & accolytes fight. Why? Brawn for freakin' brawn, buddy ;)
IrvineGray

@Shaman: Yes. Anne Hathaway. Please! Damn she looks good in that pic! Mmm, mmm.

@SirPriz&Shaman: Magic, I think, is a great weakness for Superman. Perhaps not in the movies, because I definitely want to see an Epic Supes Smackdown as much as you do, but I think it makes perfect sense in the comics. Magic is supposed to be a combination of the Earth's elemental, spiritual, psychic, and temporal(time) energies, right? It makes sense that Superman, not being from Earth, would be susceptible to the Earth's energy, whereas people from Earth or who use the Earth's magic are not AS susceptible as Supes.

However, I will admit that this method isn't flawless, and that Kryptonite and Lois have been overused like a motherf*cker. In both the comics and, especially, the movies. I'd like to see Supes do a trilogy with Brainiac as the first villian, so he can mess with Supes head, Doomsday as the second, so he can whoop Supes ass, and Darkseid for the third, so can whoop Supes ass and mess with his head at the same time. That's something I'd like to see.

DOES ANY ONE THINK THEY ARE GONNA GET ROUND THIS BY SAYING THAT ABSOLUTE JUSTICE IS A MOVIE (SMALLVILLE)
TO GET THROUGH THE LEGAL TAPE . THEN THEY HAVE RELEASED A SUPERMAN MOVIE BY 2011 ? AND RETAIN ALL THE RIGHTS ?
blueorangeny
blueorangeny - 12/8/2009, 10:43 AM
ok last i heard about the court case is that this can all go away if DC/WB have a Supes movie in the theaters or at least start filming by 2011. Am I wrong or right?

@ jedibasswatson - no I don't think the Abso' Justice 2 hour hit will be considered as a movie and fall to what you and I talking about.

@ Shaman - regarding Lois Lane, I disagree with you I can't see to put Teri Hatcher before Erica Durance from Smallville. There's a lot of Smallville haters out there but ED has portrayed a good Lois Lane

But anyway am I wrong with what I said with the court proceedings?

Hi guys i cut & paste this from this link

It’s official: Smallville’s upcoming two-hour Justice Society-centric “movie” is now an actual movie.

http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=331600

i dont think it has to be in theaters to be a movie ?

other wise they could show it in 1 theater. job done keep the rights ! im pretty sure its down to sales of the DVD that they will relase on its own merit

Although this will obviously make problems for smallville too . what will they do with all there kryptonite freak of the week stories ?

I still think Erica Durance would be the best choice for Lois Lane. Just get her away from those God awful lines that are fed to her on Smallville.

jedibasswatson- You could be on to something.

blueorangeny- I don't think you are wrong but we can't be sure. As for Lois, IMHO Margot and Terry have paved the road for Lois's true role. I like ED but i only take her portrayal as an "Elseworlds" take on the character which is fine and all but not what i would prefer in regards to an actual feature film. Anne Hathaway definitely has the look, talent and spunk to pick up Lois as it was left. Bosworth had no clue as to who Lois was. All she had to do was research. But then again, she just might never had had what it took since very few women do. Anne sure as hell does IMO.

SirPrize- Too true, my friend! It's exactly what i meant :))

IrvineGray- Magic definitely has it's place in the comics but not in a feature film. It would be just too much. In the movies, Superman is supposed to be concidered as the new 8th wonder of the world. Incorporating magic would make having a Superman kinda bland.
