There have been a billion reasons for Fox not to make sequels to one of the most popular Sci Fi movies in the last 20 years, Independence Day. From Will Smith charging to much money up front ($20 million up front plus first dollar gross) to the films producers and writers working on something else more interesting to them. The list is long but fairly useless to get into, unless of course you like sifting through all the various reasons studios give to the masses to quiet them.

But today is a new day. It is the first day of the rest of your lives! And with that this day also brings word of the ever elusive Independence Day Sequels!

This from IESB.net:

'IESB has received a tip that Will Smith is now locked for not only Independence Day 2, but also a third installment.'

Granted this is just a rumor but what a rumor to start with. Fox made booku bucks from 'Avatar', but a sequel to Avatar is a few years away and what better franchise to set up sequel shop with then Independence Day to fill the financial void?

I am geeked by this news. The special effects 14 years ago were good but now they would be epic.

Rumor has it that the Independence Day sequel could start filming as early as 2011.

ID4 alone was ok. The only way these sequels will work for me is if they splice a little District 9 and Avatar into the feel of the films and Will Smith's character dies in both of them! lol jk about the WS thing. ;)

But I agree about what they did 14 years ago compared to what could be done now, would be great to see! :)

these will be Crap Movies!!! I read this morning that it was confirmed that Will Smith has already signed on to play both movies. There was nothing left unsaid in the last movie for reason to continue.

I guess the mother ship could have just been a smaller branch off of a larger ship, sort of like the disks were of the mother ship. I would watch it, but I think they'd be pulling something out of their butts.

I have to agree with leaving it alone. I too thought ID4 was decent but to make a sequel? The only story I can see MAYBE working is with what SuperSpiderMan said. They would have to go back to the home planet. Even then, they're grasping at straws

ID4, one of the most popular? Instead of watching a potentially good movie, I sat and watched 2 hrs of USA patriot cock waving and a cliche story. How is that justify it as a good sci fi movie?

I don't care what anyone says....I LOVED ID4!!!

The plot wasn't that bad, save the uploading of the virus, but this movie just wouldn't work without WILL SMITH.

As for what the story could be....there are so many directions they could take! By now, we could've reverse engineered their technology and be capable of interstellar travel. I can't wait to see how OUR planet will be depicted after dealing with a threat from another planet.

I also loved that speech that gets so much hate...."We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

I'm REALLY interested to see how they think the world would turn out after being truly united FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Plus, who's to say that wasn't an advance party? Just because that was a mothership doesn't mean it was the only one...

I loved Independace Day. I was a kid when I saw it but I remember being like WHOA amazing graphics. They can only do better. Plot wise I agree the entire race from a whole world came and tried to kick out butts? Come on there has to be more of them and they are probably pissed we kicked their A$$

i wonder if it would pick up directly after the last one, where there mopping up leftover ground forces and possible new ships. or if it will pick up now, 14 years later. with smiths character being the new president and the world just getting back to normal and a second invasion fleet arrives, but we have some of there technology to make it a fair fight. i think the second would be a better way to go.

I have to say....
I would take this movie along the idea of """Robotech"""

Its almost 20 years later...Humans have adopted the alien tech and created all kinds of war machines that are sort of like Robotech robot veritech fighters and cycles. Earth is about 90% rebuilt and ultra modern with the tech, but they can see that these were just the initial Aliens...the ones that rape the planets and there creators sort of collects the harvest...but this time the creators come to see what happend to their locus like forerunners.

This will make a good 3 parter...sort of like Robotech Macros, and southern cross blended together and the third one ten years later can be like the next Gen. and the humans are fighting to get earth back..
