Empire Strikes Back Named Best Sequel Ever!

Nothing could compare with the Space Opera sequel, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, not even The Batman.

DVD rental firm Lovefilm conducted this poll in celebration of Iron Man 2 coming out next week. Below are the results:

The top 10 film sequels:

1. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
2. Terminator 2 (1991)
3. The Godfather Part II (1974)
4. The Dark Knight (2008)
5. Aliens (1986)
6. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
8. Toy Story 2 (1999)
9. Meet the Fockers (2004)
10. Shrek 2 (2004)

"There's just no beating Star Wars" states Helen Cowley, editor of Lovefilm, "and fans have been very vocal in our poll to establish its place as the top sequel of all time."

I like that list but I thought The Dark Knight was better then Godfather 2. Just my personal taste.

Helen goes on to say:

"Film sequels give us the chance to see our favorite characters back on the big screen but it's rare to find a sequel that truly does its predecessor justice.

"It's great to see so many highly regarded titles in the top 10 and making their own mark on film history."

What were the factors for this poll? I only ask because I don't know how Meet The Fockers is even on the list.

Empire is and always will be my favorite Star Wars movie.

Two Towers is THE WORST sequel on the list! It's the worst part of the whole trilogy put together, how could it even be considered for the top 10 when its only riding on the brilliance of the first and third chapter???

Tea- Fanwise, Spiderman2 was concidered better than the first but NOT average movie going audience wise. I'm actually part of that. I enjoyed the first better.

lol @ Teabag

I would have thought TDK would come in second

i agree with most of these. i'm glad to see meet the fockers made it on there, that movie was the best! don't agree with godfather 2 and Bourne Supremacy being on there though.

I don't know, but I would have thought that the "Wrath of Khan" would at least make the top 10 list. But then again it did not take much to improve on Star Trek the motion Picture.

EMPIRE, my favourite Star Wars movie. Fockers is a hilarious comedy and you need a comedy on a list like this to even the playing field. No one has a complaint about shrek 2? hmmmmmm lol :P

X-men 2
Spiderman 2
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Superman II
Rocky 2
Die Hard 2
Dawn of the Dead
Road Warrior Aka Mad Max 2
Evil Dead 2

None of these are on the list, but you have Meet the Fockers? That's a winning list... NOT!!!

i would have put dark knight above terminator. superman 2 and xmen 2 should be on there as well. but remember these arent comicbook fans voting but the general public. so thats why fockers would be on thier and not xmen.

ESB, well deserved, yet debatable. Toy Story 2? nah. X-men 2 should be there. Glad the overrated Spider-man 2 isn't there.

Can't understand why Terminator 2 was second on the list, I felt that Terminator was by far the better movie.

Hell yes! My favorite of the Star Wars! I will admit I am surprised it beat out T2 and Godfather II I figured one of those would've been number one. lol. And Shrek 2 is my favorite of the Shrek movies but I don't really think it should be in the top 10. Definately not Meet the Fockers or Two Towers. Now I don't really like the LoTR series but Two Towers was so frikin boring to me.

@Shaman I have to agree. How is Wrath of Khan not on here? It should be in the top ten considering many think its BETTER than the first Star Trek.

blabberingblatherskite - 4/29/2010, 9:33 AM
I don't know why people think this is the best sequel when it's not really a sequel, it's the second part of a trilogy just like The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, that being said it is the best second part of a trilogy ever.

ps the line between sequels and trilogies is so blurred that my statement doesn't really matter anymore, this is more like a technicality.

First off, the right movie is number one. Empire is still the gold standard by which great sequels should be judged. A great sequel builds upon the first film, and finds exciting new directions to take now-familiar characters. It would stand on its own as a great movie without the original. Empire is a perfect example of doing just this. So are Terminator 2 and Aliens. Which brings me to:

Dark Knight over Aliens? Like hell! Aliens at the time was one of the most exciting action movies I'd ever seen! Unlike Dark Knight, it had a well-plotted story with no gaping holes and legitimate dramatic tension.
I would say the same of The Bourne Supremacy, and even Toy Story 2,which gave us a clever twist on one of the most clever and unique films I've ever seen.

In my ever-so-humble opinion, the basic truth is that the Dark Knight is a very overrated movie. I was honestly not that impressed with it. Look beyond a couple of admittedly good acting performances (Ledger and Eckhart), and you have a story with numerous flaws and poor cinematography in the fight scenes. I'm a lot more impressed with a solid story that doesn't leave me wondering how gaping holes in the story aren't noticed by any of the characters, especially when the protagonist is supposed to be extremely intelligent. I've detailed many of these holes here over the years. I know many of you here will disagree. That's fine. We all have different standards for greatness. All I ask is for a little respect for a divergent viewpoint as I respect yours.

Actually, Shrek 2 is an amazing sequel. I think it deserves its spot.

comicb00kguy- I just agreed to every damn word you wrote!!!

SNIZZ- Second chapters should be considered sequels because they are stand alone films shown in a stand alone timeslot at the box office. Empire Stikes Back is one of the best sequels eevr while Two Towers is one of the worst. As a stand alone film, Two Towers REEKED! NO ONE watches Two Towers without watching the first and third chapters while anyone could pick up Empire and have a great time!

meet the fockers??!?! that's the only one i have a problem with! what about spider-man 2?!

i also find it sad that the best sequel ever was made 30 years ago. can't hollyweird figure out how it's done by now?

over all it's a good list tho.

why the [frick] was Wrath of Khan not on that list?

LOTR should be disqualified, as , there was no sequel, its one big movie. The book was separated into smaller parts.
