DEBUNKED: Neill Blomkamp WILL NOT be the Director of The Hobbit!

DEBUNKED: Neill Blomkamp WILL NOT be the Director of The Hobbit!

Let's Cut the BS! This was a good rumor, however, it's been put on ice.

This from the NY Mag:

"After a report surfaced on the Lord of the Rings fansite TheOneRing.net speculating that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp might be taking over as the director of the LOTR prequel, The Hobbit, dozens of media outlets parroted the report, and began weighing his benefits and drawbacks as the keeper of the Baggins flame. But an insider at his agency, William Morris Endeavor, confirms to Vulture that not only is Blomkamp not doing the movie, no one from MGM/United Artists or Warner Bros. has even contacted them about his directing the film."

This sounds to me like someone somewhere said "Hey what about Neill Blomkamp for Director of The Hobbit?" And they ran with it. Bottom line here is, MGM has no money. So until they do 'The Hobbit' wont happen. I have also heard rumblings that Peter Jackson, behind closed doors, is saying that he really does not want to direct the film in the first place. Which stinks out right.

This should be his baby to take care of. The LOTR trilogy is what catapulted Jackson into fame, one would think he would want to take care of the franchise that put him on the map.

Blomkamp is currently working on Elysium, a Sci-Fi script of his own. Details regarding the script are locked down tighter then Wonder Woman's underwear but rumor is it all happens on another planet and not Middle Earth.

Uh... That title is kinda missleading. I know it says debunked and all, but it ends with the statement that he IS the director with an exclamation point.

Could you rephrase that? Maybe say, "WILL NOT" be the director or something?

Good catch though, Jman.

I'm glad he's working on more original stuff.

I think I saw that MGM might have a buyer. Hopefully they can get that over with and get hobbit and bond moving again.

Good. He wasnt a bad director, and District 9 was a good movie, but I think he needs more experience before taking something like The Hobbit as a project.

Shaman@ That's what I thought and still how most people will take it reading the title.

I don't always buy what a person's agency says. They aren't going to confirm anything until the time comes anyway. Knowing his relationship with Jackson, I find it very odd that they wouldn't have even spoken about the movie and that doesn't mean it has to be through his agency. Those two would have dinner and talk about things and leave the details until later. Still would like to see this happen, if Jackson isn't going to do this himself.

A pity, but I'd rather see him direct a sequel to District 9 anyway! :)

Having no money wont stop MGM from making this movie, they can be funded by another party looking for an investment. Happens all the time.

I just want them to make a LOTR movie already. I want to make the Silmarillion. That would be an Epic Three Movies.
