This from Marketsaw:

"The AVATAR re-release will have 9 extra minutes, not 8 and it will all be CG. No extra footage of live action characters drinking coffee. Rainforest; some at night; a hunt sequence - a lot of flying; high impact action; an emotional scene toward the end has been added back; "the best CG in the film has been added as far as facial performance"; A Na'vi counterattack after the bulldozer attack; more of Grace at the school; adding the Stingbat and Sturmbeast creatures; additional Quaritch final AMP Suit battle shots; more of the glade love scene. It is all on par with the best of the rest of the film. They had lots of footage to choose from and they put back the absolute best scenes and shots they could."

At least, like James said, the extra footage is not of peeps drinking coffee or of the Na'vi playing basketball. It looks like we will get some boring footage of the school house. Still, I dont see this drawing people to go spend another 50 bucks at the theater.

James then spoke to MTV about what phase of Avatar 2 he is working on:

"'Avatar 2'... we're still working on deals. We don't start the movie until we get the deals worked out," he said. "I'm making notes. I'm not sitting idle," Cameron said. "But really, what I'm working on primarily is the novel."

"I never had a chance to get the novel done while we were making the movie, and I always intended to. I didn't want to do a cheesy novelization, where some hack comes in and kind of makes s--t up. I wanted to do something that was a legitimate novel that was inside the characters' heads and didn't have the wrong culture stuff, the wrong language stuff, all that."

Um, James. I hear crickets! I thought in Hollywood those "hack comes in and kind of makes s--t up" were called writers? I could be wrong, but I dont think so.

James then went on to give a sort of "State of the 3-D Tech" speach:

"The whole argument about conversion will go away for high end, first run 3D. Two years from now when there are thousands of 3D cameras out their shooting live feeds to 3D broadcast networks, how can a producer go to a studio and say: "I can't shoot 3D. It's too difficult. There are too many problems. It costs too much. It adds 6 months to post-production. They won't be able to say any of that stuff. That stuff is all garbage.

TITANIC's conversion is taking 8 months to a year to complete, not a fast turnaround like CLASH OF THE TITANS. Cameron: "(TITANS) showed a fundamental lack of knowledge about stereo space, in addition to the shoddy work that comes from rushing." Cameron likes TITANS in 2D as do I (I have had the Blu-ray since it was released) from a directorial standpoint and as a fan of Sam Worthington.

Cameron on how they are technically converting TITANIC. "You just can't cut out edges, you're going to get flat people moving around." He will be using all his knowledge to put things on their right depth planes. They had tests for TITANIC from seven different conversion vendors on the exact same shots and they got back seven different answers as to were they thought things were spatially. "Some of them were not bad guesses and some of them were ridiculous."

We will have to wait a couple years and see if what NostraCameron has predicted will come true, my guess is, more studios will jump on the 3D band wagon if Avatar 2 breaks even more records then the first Avatar. I don't mind 3D if done right and gimmick less.

The re release is set to sneak back into theaters August 27th 2010.

Hate to say it, but I know I'll be shelling out however much I need to to see Avatar in 3D, on the big screen one more time.

I don't care how big of a TV I have or how good the Bul-ray is, there's nothing that can produce the same experience as going to the theater and watching it. And I'm sure that there's enough people like me that will make this re-release worthwhile for Cameron & the studio.

OK Listen I will on say this once "Avatar Sucks"

Heres my reasons - Its nothing more than a Version of FernGully: The Last Rainforest just with a different name, The Over Hyped 3d effect wasn't very Impressive on Real D 3d Im not so sure about Imax But still, to add to that it was completely way to long, it wasn't original and I don't know how James Cameron seems to do it but he could Poop on a Taco and Idiots would eat it and swear its the best taco they've ever eaten, but im not gonna bash James Cameron because in my mind he is a freaking genius but Avatar Sucks and when people realize that they will truly understand how stupid they are.

I'll go see it one more time. Only because I tried to watch it in 2D at home, and fell asleep. It's a great movie, but this movie NEEDS the 3D lol

avatar was amazing.

of COURSE it borrowed from everything in the world, from "ferngully" to "pocahontas" to "romeo & juliet" to "dragons: fire and ice"... and most of all from "john carter of mars." but if you stop calling them "ripoffs" and start calling them "allusions," and you say that the film "brilliantly incorporates classic themes about displacement, rebellion, forbidden love, and finding peace and joy in your adoptive home when your native home lets you down," it makes it a lot more fun. cameron is not the only writer to borrow from other sources, just like star wars rips off the lord of the rings and all of them rip off king arthur. (white knight, black knight, and a magician to lead the quest... whatever)

the point is he mixed all those concepts seamlessly, told the story in a ripping cool way, gave it a theme that is relevant and meaningful for our generation, and made it accessible to the whole world instead of just sci-fi geeks. plus VISUALLY the movie was the coolest thing anybody's ever seen. you pooh-poohers are just trying to spoil it for everyone.

OH... PLEASE see it in imax, those of you that are on the fence. it's not the size of the screen, it's that the 3D depth of field is about 35% deeper... it's a totally different experience and you literally feel like you can see for miles and miles.

Alternate@ Different strokes for different folks. I tried watching in 3D and had to take my glasses off about 1/3 into the movie. Couldn't handle it. I had a number of friends tell me they had to do the same.

Visually, I think the movie was cool. The rest fell very flat for me. It was simply a regurgitated story and and theme. I didn't see it taking little bits and pieces from classic themes, but directly taking the main plot/story from a couple other films. The image of the synopsis of Pocahontas where the character names were crossed off and replaced with Avatar characters was exactly what I felt when I watched the movie. I hadn't seen that kind of visuals before, but I had seen the story before. When I watched Star Wars or LOTR I knew there was nothing that was close to either of those two movies that I had seen before. How people could say Star Wars rips off LOTR is beyond me. Funny how people view things so differently.

I loved Avatar when it was called "Dances with Wolves".

@ranger14—i think it's just a product of what we've experienced before... if you read things in a certain order, the progression is obvious to you but might not be to someone else. you must have read certain other things in a different order than i did, so it annoyed you more than me. i wasn't trying to change anyone's mind, just make a point for myself!

i DO see all the copied stuff, but it just didn't bug me as much because i see that kind of thing all the time in literature (i'm an english teacher). people didn't hate on "west side story" for ripping off "romeo & juliet," they just saw it as an updated version of a classic, told in a new way. besides, shakespeare didn't make up the story of "romeo & juliet" either; there were two other versions published in england less than 50 years before his (what a filthy hack that shakespeare was haha).

as for the 3d problem, yeah i know a lot of people had issues with it. i just meant that if you ARE doing 3D, the imax is a better way to do it. i saw both and the imax was on a whole other level. we were 12 rows back and my 6 year-old daughter was literally feeling the air in front of her for the fern fronds! :)

Cameron is about the only one who has done 3D in a NON-GIMMICKY way. He knows how to film is right so that it really does enhance the experience. When I saw Avatar I was really blown away by the 3D experience...It was unlike anything I've experienced in movies before.

About the only thing that could compare is when I saw a movie in a big dome. I think it was a nature film about sharks at like a science center when I was a kid. And you go into the theater and once you sit down the chairs recline back and you look up at the dome and the whole dome becomes a screen. It was incredible, that's about the only other movie experience I've had that compares or beats Avatar.

Avatar was an incredible experience in IMAX 3D (the only way to see it), but not a great movie in itself.

It brilliantly showcased the potential of 3D in an entertaining way. Right from the first scene in zero G I was hooked, despite being a bit sceptical/cynical beforehand.

It wasn't the best movie ever, but for the visual experience alone it was worth the price of the ticket and then some.

Nothing is original in this world! Remember that guys when you watch movies! Everybody borrows or should i say steals ideas from other movies... Same goes with books... and comics... and everything in the world! Always Heroes and Villains and struggling with life or whatever... But they are all just a stories!
And i myself love them with all my heart!:D

Im totally against the remakes, but borrowing ideas and transforming them in to something cool, that i dont mind!
And Avatar was cool! Althought the story needed little pit more polishing!

It's hard to care if it's story rips off other movies. I can still watch this movie plenty of times and not care about it's similarities. It'll be interesting to see how much the second one will make, more or less.

Re-releasing? WTF? Is there really a need to re-release a movie that is the highest grossing film in history? I mean, I could understand re-releasing it if it included an hour or two of extra footage... But for a measly nine minutes? Is that just enough time to make Jake's main speech longer and show us more Na'vi side boob?

There's really no point in re-releasing an average film. The only real stroke of genius/greatness in this film is Cameron's 3D. But, even that can't make me get over just how greedy Cameron is. First he's gonna re-release Avatar, and then he's gonna convert Titanic to 3D and re-release it. And WTF's up with converting Titanic? Was there really a demand out there for it? Was someone sitting at home watching Titanic, screaming at there TV, "THIS WOULD BE AWESOME IN 3D!" ... I doubt it.

@Gmoney I finally loved Dances with Wolves when Avatar did it better. Nothing against Mr. Lewis his acting in 'Wolves' was amazing, but it was boring for me when I was a kid. Avatar doesn't just target serious movie goers expecting the next Ocsar winning performance, and that is why people like it.

I don't think a person on the planet could see Avatar and call it Oscar performance acting, but it does better at entertaining the mass than any of the other films it ripped off.

Is it overrated? Yes. This is where most hate stems from. The people that are pissed at another's ideas of fun.
