Del Toro Speaks All Things Hobbit

Del Toro talks about Gollum and adds that The Hobbit will scare you.

When asked about what creative design direction Del Toro is taking with Gollum, Del Toro states:

"From a design standpoint it will be the same creature, just a few years younger, but I think that there is never a scene quite like the 'riddles in the dark' in the trilogy. As an introduction to Gollum and a flashpoint to the origin on the character, it is so powerful and primal that it would be different in that way. We are presenting a side of the character that is very strong and beautiful and iconic."

Can't wait. Gollum was my favorite character in LOTR and I am sure it will be a split between Gollum and Smaug in The Hobbit.

Del Toro also goes on to say that The Hobbit won't be a child friendly happy walk in the park:

"The intensity of the scenes of The Hobbit will have the intensity that they had in the book when I was a kid reading them. The spiders of Mirkwood are a pretty harrowing experience and facing the great goblin in the caves is quite a thrilling moment. The Battle of the Five Armies, the first encounter with Gollum -- there are scary moments."

Del Toro is hands down my favorite director, his movies are all brilliant and I can't wait to see the depth that he brings to the Hobbit. LOTR was great but I think the Hobbit has the potential to be even greater just because of how much Del Toro cares for all the tiny little things that make an atmosphere amazing. Everyone who's seen the documentary that came with the Hellboy II dvd knows what I mean, the guy is mental when it comes to the tiny little things in a movie, stuff that gets three tenths of a second on film gets months of preparation. Can't wait to see this.

Oh and I remember Ron Perlman saying that he was involved in the movie, personally I think he'd make a great smaug or goblin king, hell they wouldn't even need that much make up his face is perfect for either roll as it is.

Del Toro is a brilliant director he is very much like Tim Burton but he doesnt end up going overboard on wanting to express his posh posh Artistic view. I have always seen him as the kind of director that loves to have detail in his movies, while keeping it Dark and yet very realistic. I Think the best way to describe him is as a Darker Peter Jackson with a taste for the occult and for comics with an awesome imagination.

Three things are a given:

This movie will rock.

Ron Perlman will voice Smaug.

I will eat a brownie before viewing.

SEE THE COOL THING ABOUT DELTORO IS THAT HE LIKES DOING MAJORITY OF HIS CREATURE EFFECTS PRACTICAL, YOU GET A REAL SENSE OF REALISM INSTEAD OF THE NOW COMMON CGI, EVER SINCE CAMERON INTRODUCED IT IN ABYSS AND THEN TERMINATOR 2, EVERYONE JUST DOES IT LIKE IT HAS TO BE IN YOUR MOVIE, ALMOST LIKE A CRUTCH TO MAKE THE MOVIE SURE NUMBERS..BUT THERES SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT PRACTICAL-IT FEELS REAL BECAUSE IT IS REAL,TANGIBLE, SOMETHING CGI CANT EVER DUPLICATE..SURE DELTORO USES CGI AT TIMES, BUT ITS ONLY WHEN HE REALLY HAS TO.

GUNSMITH @ Thats what they should've done with the STAR WARS prequels! Too much CGI sucks!!! An WTF couldn't with all their budget get real CLONE TROOPER suits?????

End of the day a mix of both is good, all CGI is bad! ; )

I understand why directors choose to do things in cg, for somethings it just looks more realistic, you can move more fluidly than a guy in a costume. The thing is Del Toro's real creature effects are so good that you'd swear they had to be cgi. His creatures are so well designed and executed that the line between real and cg is blurred until it is imperceptible, which is why I'm pumped about the Hobbit.

Lee777 my brother the Starwars Prequels sucked because Lucas is a terrible Director Granted he Directed Episode 4 and episode 4 was very good but he has lost his touch as a Director......I would have taken one look at hayden christiansen and said next.

I have to admit that having Del Toro at the helm scares me a little. He's an amazing imagineer but I never like the scripts of his movies. Loved all the action and gorgeous FX from Hellboy 1 and 2 but I hated the dialogue. Same with Pan's Labyrinth. Loved the imagination, hated the dialogue. I hope the dialogue in The Hobbit treats me a little better than other Del Toro fare... because the visuals are sure to be great.

Star Wars prequels sucked because George Lucas, in the 70's, said that visual FX existed to support a good story. In the 90's he said, "Star Wars movies are special effect movies." Oh, how years of fame and fortune can change a man. Clearly he didn't think the story and characters were important, only the visuals. When you have cool effects without dramatic intention, you have nothing. Also, in the original trilogy you have a normal guy to relate to: Han Solo. In the prequels you only have wealthy people, politicians, aliens, and the magical Jedi.

Rock On...!

Really? you didn't like the the dialogue? I mean, sure, I'll grant you it wasn't oscar worthy but I still think it flows naturally and it certainly advances the plot well. I guess it's personal opinion though.

Speaking as an actor and an artist, I'm with knight, I don't see where the dialogue was bad. The Hellboy movies where supposed to be a bit cheesy anyway and Pan's Labyrinth? Do you speak spanish? If you don't, you have no room to talk because that was the language it was written and performed in and dialogue always suffers at least a little in translation.

In other news...

I love the idea of the Hobbit being split into two movies. Personally I think the mid point will be where the dwarfs are captured by the elves of mirkwood. I just think that'd be an awesome ending to the first movie.

Sh*t! I was hoping for a watered down PG13 movie! We don't have enough of them!

Change the Spiders for ladybirds and Smaug for a caterpillar. Come on people, lets forget the source material and have a film we can all enjoy! Who's with me?
