With news recently breaking that Warner Bros. Pictures is actually moving forward with a Justice League movie, once again a new beacon of hope lighted up in our hearts. After all, Marvel’s The Avengers proved that a team-up superhero movie can work. Will Beall is set to write a script for it, and comic book industry legend Mark Millar himself said that he heard that the script is “dark and mature”, which would make it very different in tone compared with The Avengers. But well, with the confirmation that the movie is in development, and a script is being written, what story it could follow? Here I have five ideas that a Justice League Movie could use, and keep that in mind, the movie doesn’t have to necessarily follow every important aspect of these stories, but mostly the basic idea and add its own magic.

1) Justice League: Tower Of Babel
Tower of Babel deals with Batman's perceived betrayal to the superhuman community by keeping records concerning the strengths and weaknesses of his allies in the JLA, including plans to neutralise his allies in a fight. His files are stolen by Ra's al Ghul, who uses them to defeat the League through a coordinated attack to prevent them from interfering with his latest scheme.

This story has a big focus on Batman, which is DC most successful character today when you talk about movies. A movie could very well follow this idea, but some of the aspects would most probably have to be changed to make it more familiar to the audiences. Between the changes, the ideal can be something like the story having the original seven members: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), The Flash (Barry Allen), Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, and of course keeping Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson return, maybe?) as the main villain and his own henchmen. And such a story wouldn’t need a direct focus on the team origin, but instead, on the relationship between them and exploring their own individual personalities, mainly as their trust on Batman comes at risk. Note: Justice League: Doom handled it well, adding other enemies in the story as well, but so many villains normally doesn’t work in a live action movie.

2) Justice League: The New 52
In September 2011, following the conclusion of the Flashpoint miniseries, all DC titles were canceled and relaunched from issue #1, with DC continuity being rebooted again. The first six issues of Justice League were set five years in the past and featured a brand new origin for the team, while issue 7 and beyond takes place in the present day. The starting line-up of the team consists of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, the Flash (Barry Allen), and Cyborg.

The recent DC Comics reboot is the way to go for a younger and more interesting approach to a JLA origin story. In this new scenario, Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, etc all are established heroes, fighting evil before getting together to form the League. This incarnation of the team has Darkseid as their main nemesis, and in a movie, such a villain can give a bigger challenge to the group, and there’s also the possibility of him bringing an army from Apokolips. A very good example of how the Darkseid subordinates could work on this could be like the one we see in the first issue of the comic when Batman is chasing a foe who has some advance weaponry, who before dies mentions Darkseid name, and the movie can go through the mysterious direction as of “Who is Darkseid?” Not to forget the excellent focus on the ego of each team member, like Batman, who even with Green Lantern showing off his powers, and being good at dealing with their enemy, doesn’t care for any help. Green Lantern is also an arrogant guy, always referring to himself in the third person. Superman kind that differs from his big boy scout classic personality, giving a punch first and asking questions later, mostly because he knows that he is a powerful man. Even Aquaman new version is better on this with all that Shark action, and he knows that he’s not the "coolest" superhero there is.

3) Justice League: Justice
The story, which takes place outside regular DC continuity, has Lex Luthor assembling the Legion of Doom after he and several other villains begin to have nightmares about the end of the world and the failures of the Justice League to prevent said apocalypse. As the Legion begins engaging in unprecedented humanitarian deeds throughout the world, they also launch a series of attacks on the Justice League and their families. The threat that the Legion was warned about destroying the Earth turns out to be caused by Brainiac, who seeks to destroy Earth during the chaos.

Like I said before, several villains in a live action movie never works, but if eventually the movie does follow this type of story, then this might be a good one to use. In this case scenario, the movie would focus more in the villains, by having them doing humanitarian deeds around the world, but also attacking the Justice League and their families. Maybe this story could be mixed with Tower of Babel a bit, and have these villains exploring the heroes weakness, but let’s not go deep on it. There could be some great characters development, both from the villains side as I already pointed, and from the heroes side too, by exploring well the attacks on their families. Also, in the end of a movie Brainiac could be revealed as the main threat and maybe force the League and the Legion to join forces to defeat him. Like I said, this is an idea, doesn’t necessary needs to follow the original story concept.

4) JLA: New World Order
Posing as a new group of super-heroes, the Hyperclan have descended upon Earth, convincing everyone that they are a benevolent force. But as their true nature and plans come to light, only the World's Greatest Heroes can stop them. Standing side by side, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and the Martian Manhunter take on these alien posers and come to realize that Earth needs a guardianship made up of only the mightiest of icons.

If WB wants an alien invasion type of story, then my suggestion would be this one, with the Hyperclan coming to Earth and doing good actions, having citizens by their side, the League suspicious, and in the end, with the heroes finding out that the Hyperclan were not the benevolent beings they pretended to be and were using mind-control technology to turn the public against the League. This idea would be a more different and interesting approach of an alien invasion story, with the aliens “trying to cure the planet”, instead of the classic invasion, also having their personalities explored, and eventually turning the public against the League, which would give the chance of good dynamic for them in terms of how they should act before new benevolent beings. Also, they’re Martians, with this relating them to Martian Manhunter, giving the character a bigger participation in the story.

5) Justice League: Secret Origins (From the animated series)
From the animated tv series, the pilot episode has Batman and Superman teaming up to deal with an alien invasion, and a telepathic message leads the duo to a military base housing future ally J'onn J'onzz.

Having the influence of the story from an animated series is not something movies normally does, but Secret Origins is one of those which is so good, that could be easily used. It is yet another alien invasion plot, which would be great to have Batman and Superman relationship as the focus, as they’re the first ones to team-up here, also introducing The Martian Manhunter as an important part of story, with other heroes being aware about the alien attack and having Batman, Superman and Martian Manhunter recruiting them. This story would mostly be the main influence, a lot of aspects could be changed from it, but still have the essence of it, with Batman and Superman first meeting, and seeing that the world needs a team of heroes to go against such a threat, and of course, it would be a great and easy origin story, having good characters development and interactions.

I’m sure there are several other stories the movie could use, but I think these are the five best options, make sure to sound off in the usual place what you think of these and other stories that can be adapted.

Nice article.

There are plenty of good stories they could draw from to make a good movie. If they're going to do it before individual movies for Flash, WW, etc.. then it needs to be AT LEAST 2 1/2 hours to get in where everyone came from. I would prefer Flash and WW come first then have something like the animated show did with Martian Manhunter and introduce him in the movie.

if the movie follows the script of tower of babel and let batman shine over other heroes again, I am done with this movie---stupid!

I actually think Doom's adaptation was very poor - action was great, but concept was silly.

I've said this before, but one very resourceful man, be it Lex Luthor, Tommy Elliot, Slade Wilson, or even Ma'alefa'ak - all of these people could have singlehandedly implemented Savage's plan.

Take out the Flash? Mail him that bomb package.
Take out Batman? Learn his identity.
Take out Martian Manhunter? Give him a drink.
Take out Wonder Woman? Bump into her with a poison tack.
Take out Superman? Shoot him with a Kryptonite bullet.
Take out Green Lantern? Let him breathe some fear toxin.

Still, I don't think too many villains is a problem, so long as they fit the story. Brainiac is the kind of character who could tie a lot of the characters together, considering how well-traveled he is.

The thing about the Justice League is that when they come together, it needs to be organic, not just Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman flipping through profiles to see who is worthy of their attention (which has happened). No SHIELD like organization, just a mutually beneficial defense.

i think that the new 52 would be the best way to introduce everyone. the only problem with that is the focus on Batman near the beginning. DC is going to have to reboot Batman in order to properly make a JL movie. seeing as there seem to already be plans in place for a wonder woman, flash, and justice league movie, i say that the best way for them to do it is to take the Mark Ruffalo approach. have your Man of Steel, wonder woman, and flash solo movies (with perhaps a green lantern cameo, for continuity's sake), then bring them together (along with green lantern) for the justice league movie where they can reintroduce the new batman for the next wave of movies. then after that they can have as many batman solo films as they want, allowing them to skip over the origin story that everyone knows by this point

they are not going to have alot of villains. They are introducing flash, wonder woman, aquaman, maybe a new GL, maybe martian manhunter and who knows what other heroes to audiences...They need a really good villain or two at most to balance it out. Too many bad guys and they risk turning it into a complete shitshoot! They should just use darkseid before Marvel puts him back on the screen in GOTG as Thanos...any later, and they risk people thinking the characters are too much alike and not seeing it

Can't start with Darkseid - you can't go anywhere after that.

Villain? I say Despero. But Warner Bros. is probably taking the Tower Of Babel route again (failed Mortal project?). And nice write up— good ideas.

Would LOVE all of these to be made! All I hope for is the line-up to be Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Flash Barry Allen, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. I could also be ok with just the first 5 as long as there are hints that the other 2 exist or if they have cameos. ABSOLUTELY NO CYBORG THOUGH!!!!! Hated that choice for the New 52, in my opinion, the worst decision that Geoff Johns ever made.

Also, I'd like Darkseid to be the main villain. I could also go with Brainiac, Despero, Starro, or a Legion of Doom thing. THAT, would be cool...

Secret Origins— White Martian invasion is the safest route.

I could see Secret Origins being done (starting with a Superman/Batman team-up and ending with Martian Manhunter telepathically contacting everyone). Then I could see New World Order, and THEN New 52's Origins.

I like your line: "in the end Brainiac could be revealed as the main treat" LOL!

But seriously, Secret Origins - keep it simple.
Then WB can do the other stories as sequels.

I think the fifth idea is best.
I have always believed that "Secret Origins" has been the best way to explain why the League was created and is not necessary to link individual films to create an "assembly". In "Secret Origins" are called by Martian Manhunter. Wonder Woman is presented for the first time the group and she denies that the Amazons are a myth. A Martian, aliens trying to conquer the planet, starting with a Superman and Batman working together.
For me, this story should be the first film Justice League.
The individual origins will be revealed in the movies for the character.

Idk, I think they should take on Darkseid or Starro.

Another reason I like the idea of the fifth is: it's animated series closer to the latest generations. So there's a guaranteed audience to go see the film.

It's still Superman and Batman on a team. That'll draw crowds. "Ripoff"? No. Piggy-backing on The Avengers' success in cinemas? Yes. Being a good movie is the most important thing.

@Intruder So just don't do it at all just because another company did a superhero team movie? That's completely mental. They said Avengers couldn't work either and look how that turned out... Both Avengers and Justice League would look great "Pixard" or a CGI film like the DCUO opening cinematic, but Justice League can work on screen just as Avengers did. Grant it, I don't think one should come any time within the next 4-5 years though.

Screw "identifying" with the characters. No matter what character you put on screen whether it be Superman, Batman, Captain America, Iron Man, etc.. No on can actually "identify" with them. Sure there may be issues that come up that people can go, "Oh, that happened to me once." but no one can truly identify with a comic book hero. I want to see heroes coming together and kicking some major ass to save the world, not a soap opera.

In my opinion, Warner Bros. should introduce more of the characters on the silver screen before rushing into JLA movie, I know a lot of people who dont know who Martian Manhunter is or even Flash. The Avengers was awesome and really made it a challenge for WB to make a Justice League movie. I mean its too late for it now..TBH I really dont know about how they are going to pull off a Justice League movie now, but I would watch it if Christian Bale plays Batman and Henry Cavill plays Supes.

They did, actually. Even if they failed at the box office (and at making a good movie), they've increased brand awareness (ex. supermarket toy aisle).

so many great ideas. But too bad we have a vision-less WB behind it. So busy trying to play catch up, they dont set the standard.

I know, which is why I want individual movies for each before, but, it could also work starting off with this first, then having the individual movies.

Justice League movie: Gets peoples attention, they're going to see it because let's face it, people are going to watch anything with Superman and Batman. They get exposed to the other heroes, Flash, Wonder Woman, etc.. It would be a successful film, not as much as Avengers because there was build up for that. But with everyone aware now of the other heroes besides Batman and Superman and what they can do, by the time their individual movies come around they should be more successful than if they came out before Justice League since people have an idea about them. They'll wanna know more about their origin, where they came from, how they got their abilities and so on.

Marvel:
-Overall pretty successful individual movies
-HUGELY successful Team up movie
-Meaning the sequels to the individual movies will be even more successful than their predecessor

DC: "Possibly"
-Successful Team up movie
-Successful individual movies
-HUGELY Successful Team up sequel

I'd prefer there be build up, but if they do it right, it could work the other way also.

I think an adaptation of the Justice storyline would make for a very interesting film. I would hate to see this be simply another origin/alien invasion film. If they're are smart, they'd present the Justice League as an already established team and have them face a threat that test them as a unit and challenge their faith in each other.

@Spartan11 yeah, I could see that too. Not sure about already having them established though.
