So excited for Capaldi!!! Smith was never my cup of tea, but McGann has become my favorite solely from the minisode

Panther Nah he's still 11, Hurt was 'The War Doctor.' In night of the doctor, McGann says "Doctor no more," but Hartnell-Smith all had the title of "The Doctor."

Moffat said in an interview today that Donna-Doctor counts as 12 and Smith is 13. Theories today are saying that smith is the last and Capaldi will be a miracle apparently. Everything is so weird now.

Can. Not. Wait.

I just got into the show through Netflix (I'm only on episode 12 of Eccleston era), but I can't wait to see what Capaldi brings to the show.

PS: I really, really hope Capaldi keeps his awesome mustache for the show.

BlueMex - Weird, is really hard to believe everyone who claims to do an interview with someone. Take a read at this

But I'm always suspicious with tabloids.

@Blue well he didn't force himself, he was already dead, temporarily alive with the chance to choose; nothing was really forced
@Panther idek anymore haha but he said he wouldn't remember any of it, therefore in his, Eccelstons, and Tennant's mind still being the war doctor and the version of himself that he regretted the most. Only Smith knows what happened...I guess..

youknowmyname - Nice catch! Holy shit is Capaldi.
Moffat must always be like "make sure there's an easter egg there and there, we need to [frick] up the fans minds even more"

So, it seemed like the assumption was that Smith's 11th Doctor (and now 11th, penultimate regeneration) would regenerate one final time into Peter Capaldi, and the next series would be that final Doctor who would spend Series 8 going through whatever events that would lead to the beating of the regeneration limit.

Now, it looks very much like Moffat really is counting the aborted 10th Doctor regeneration from The Stolen Earth/Journey's End that was stopped before The Doctor actually had to change form as a complete burning off of one full life off the cycle. Now mind you I'm talking about 10's actual regeneration, not the Meta Crisis Doctor clone that happened as a result. He himself doesn't count.

You add that to the War Doctor having happened, and Matt Smith's Doctor actually is "the Last Doctor" and they'll be using Time of the Doctor to solve the regeneration limit in the span of that one episode. This would make Peter Capaldi the first of the new era of Doctor Who without the imposed limit. Merry Christmas to the Doctor indeed.

All I see are flames,and if you say that's him in a regenration state.....lol! Guess my overactive imagination just won't acknowledge it. lol. But I hope this special is good,was kinda disappointed in the anniversary one.

the fact of weather hurt was a warrior or a doctor is irelivant he is still a regeneration and the 11th in this timelords regeneration cycle making matt the 12th regeneration and doctor as that is the name we know him by.
thus making capaldi the 13th and last now looking for gallifrey to be granted another cycle by the time lords

SuperDude001 - you see the face in the fire? Looks kinda like the 8th Doctor but could be Capaldi or a different character all together.

and the War Doctor doesn't count as a Doctor as he was a warrior the Time Lords have a total of 13 lives at least they used to so Capaldi who I am really excited for as he will be like going back to the first few Doctors I'm guessing, will have the last regeneration.

Looking forward to Smith leaving because as good as he is I just cant follow his Doctor okay its probably the writers work but I always found Tennants Doctor much more interesting.

I don't want him to go. My 2nd favourite (behind Tom Baker).

@The Dpool

Incorrect. The War Doctor doesn't count only in as much as affecting the count of the incarnations who've always called themselves "The Doctor". That's it.

He is still an actual, valid regeneration that existed between 8 and 9 and is a full life burned off the cycle of the Doctor's total regenerations. The assumption has been that Smith would regenerate into Capaldi and he would be the last one (and have to be the one to find the way around the limit).

Now it seems Steven Moffat was deadly serious about the !0th Doctor's aborted regeneration in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End counting (the regeneration itself, not the clone Doctor that resulted from it later on). If Moffat really means it, that means Matt Smith's Doctor has burned through all his possible regnerative energy and HE is actually the last incarnation (meaning HE will have to find the way around the limit in Time of the Doctor in order for us to get Capaldi. So much for the suspense around that...).

Loopholes and paradoxes exist. The need not have been introduced yet but they are out there.

12,13,14,24? only time will tell.

@TerminalVoyd

In the 35th anniversary novel The Infinity Doctors, we learned there were two other great Time Wars before the First Doctor left Gallifrey. During the final war, the Eighth Doctor decided he was the only one could stop it and took a regeneration potion that programmed his next incarnation to be a warrior. This, along with his refusal to call himself the Doctor, means Hurt’s incarnation isn’t counted as part of the basic numbering system for the various Doctors. Christopher Eccleston’s version is thus still the Ninth Doctor, even though he was the hero’s tenth incarnation.
