According to Vulture Sony Pictures producer Neal Moritz is interested in a reboot for the 1997 Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi film Starship Troopers, based on the Robert A. Heinlein novel. Moritz is also the producer for the upcoming Total Recall reboot. The movie is getting so much attention from the public that the producer may hope to start remakes of other hit movies soon.

The screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz are on board to write the script. They're both responsible for writing Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. And let's not forget that they also worked on several episodes of Fringe.

The time is the future. Johnny Rico joins the military after graduation to become a citizen and for the love of his high school sweetheart. In the war against the bug aliens of Klendathu, the military is a very dangerous place to be. Johnny works his way through several battles and with the help of his friends and comrades, helps turn the tide of the war, and save the human race.

The cast of the original included Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon and Michael Ironside.

I cannot possibly think of a single reason for this. The original is a brilliant piece of satire, and the action and effects hold up incredibly well.

the original still holds up to this day,I don't see the point.

@THETRUTH - a serious war story is exactly what it shouldn't be. If they want to tell a serious sci-fi war story, they should just write a new one, or at least adapt something that hasn't been adapted yet - for example, Gears of War.

The original was NOT a great movie. The CGI was great, the action was pretty good, but I HATED EVERY CHARACTER. I was routing for the bugs the entire time.

It was an even worse adaptation. Did you know the original story had Mech-suites and the Bugs had lazer weapons? It was 9 times more awesome than the film.

I'm all for another film if its more like the book.

If they actually follow the book more closely, I will be pleased. One of the coolest scenes I have ever read is the entry into the atmosphere in the jump suits.

@MassExecutions

funny fact: they used Mech-suits called "Marauders" on a later direct-to-DVD sequel called "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder"

here's a picture of a Marauder:

I saw the movie...it was bad,but those Mechs were awesome!

Yeah, it would be interesting if they followed the book closer. Bedsides the Marines having mech-suits, there was also a third race besides the humans and bugs, if I remember correctly... I do love the original movie though...

Mass, you were supposed to root for the bugs! That was the whole idea. It was a satire on Fascism..and sorry, American foreign policy as much as it was a balls out action flick.

Ror, yes I suppose both sides were supposed to suck for the purpose of satire, but it reduced the entertainment value for me. Also, I didn't root for the bug because I hated the government or the military, I rooted for the bugs because I hated the actual individual characters.

Maybe the whole thing was just ruined for me because I read the book first.

I hated them too actually. And now that I think about it, maybe it wasn't so much Americans as just any nation that goes to war. Verhovan said that the idea behind the movie was that "war makes fascists of all of us" or something to that effect. Anyway I always kinda forgave the silly dialog and acting because I was never sure if it was intentional or not. Either way it's a great action movie.

Ror, yes, the action was good and the effects were GREAT. Tactics seemed to be lacking, though.

I just look it up on Wikipedia and got some confirmation of what I remembered. Heinlein was PRO military. Verhoeven made it into a satire and NEVER EVEN READ THE WHOLE BOOK. No wonder I hated that movie. If Verhoeven hadn't made Total Recall I wouldn't be able to forgive him.

I knew we couldn't get out of this discussion without someone mentioning America and fascism in the same sentence. Sigh. It's a funny thing how no country was every worried about how the U.S.A. was perceived when they were being overrun by another nation. Political agenda and Zionism are conversations had in countries where there is no imminent threat. After serving in the military most of my adult life I can assure you that anywhere I've gone no one ever commented on my country's foreign policy while someone else was trying to kill them. Except maybe to thank us for saving their asses. After the fact it seems everyone suddenly forgets that part and just wants to talk about world domination. Oh yeah, but please keep sending all the money and aid. But other than that go away forever, unless we're attacked again. Gotta love the people on this ridiculous planet.

Mugwamp - 12/2/2011, 12:42 PM
And to get back on the original topic. I always loved this movie and hope they don't try to "serious-it-up" Hollywood style. Remake a movie that desperately needs it like Fantastic Four. Nothing like having a black Alicia Masters and a Thing that is 5' 8" and can only lift a pickup truck.

Mugwamp, I don't want to get into a big discussion about this but I'll just say that all of that is in the eye of the beholder isn't it? One man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist as they say. As for the movie, I'm not saying that's what I took from it..I was actually too young when I saw it to get much more than a kick ass sci fi action movie from it. But watching it again I did pick up on what the director was TRYING to put across. Whether you agree with that or not, that part of the message he was going for.
